Patented June It, 1920.
I 'To all whom it may concern:
Be it' known that I, THOMAS E. 'I'AYLos, a citizen of the United States residing at Mansfield, in the county of ltichland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Portable tion.
, My invention relates toimprovements in portable stoves, and more particularly to that class or type known as knockdown stoves which are adapted to' be readily dis assembled and nested, so to occupy but little space in transportation or storage.
T he present embodiment of the invention is particularly designed and adapted for use as an orchard heater for use in protecting orchards, gardens and other places from frost, which would otherwise injure the fruit or other vegetation.
The primary object oi the invention is to provide a generally improved portable stove of the class indicated which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap or" mauufacture and efiicicnt in use.
5 further object is the provision of a improved knock-down heater or stove body having improved joints and means for assembling and disassembling'the parts.
A still further object is the provision of an improved heater or stove body provided with removable legs and grate, the grate adapted to be removably inserted in the stove body after the legs are inserted 'or set up and the grate acting as a key or looking member for securing the legs in assembled or set up position.
Astill furthefobject is the provision of an improved knock-down stove or heater body provided with improved body and grate supporting legs, the removable grate acting; when in position to lock or secure the parts of the stove bodv, as well as the legs,
in assembled position foruse and acting as the medium for releasing said parts for disassembling preparatory to nesting for transportation or storage. v
. TV 1thv the abovementioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel consuuction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one oi its embodiments in the accompany is t appended claims.
Referring to the drawmgs, forming a I up of part of this specification, Figure l, is a side elevation of the improved stove in assembled or set up position.
Fig. 2, a horizontal cross sectional View taken on line 2--3. oi. Fig. l.
Fig. l, an. enlarged cross sectional view oi? the detachable joint for the stove, made v interlocking hooks.
Fig. '1', a fragmentary sectional view, of the adjacent assembled parts of the stove body and detachable legs and removable grate, and illustrating the manner in which the latter is supported upon the legs and acts to secure the legs and. the base portion of the stove body in assembled position.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures (if the drawings.
The improved portable stove comprises a suitable stove or heaterbody 1, said heater body 1,.in the present instance, comprising an open ended cylindrical body, and as a means of forming a knock-down stove body the latter is preferably formed. in two sections of substantially semi cy'lindrical shape, as shown'in Fig. 2, oi the drawings, said sections having their marginal edges bent to form. detachable interlocking hooks 1, forming a seam or joint, as shown.
If necessary, or desirable, the upper portions of the interlocking hooks 1, may be provided with an opening 1. adapted to rei'll movably receive and contain a locking element 1, suehias a cotter pin, as shown 'in ings or slots 1, adapted to receive and. 061itain a plurality of stove body and grate sup porting legs 2.
As a means'of removably inserting; and securing the legs 2, in the openings 1, of the stove or heater body 1, as Well as securely bracing the ilegs when in assembled position,
I each leg comprises a main bOdy portion 2, illdrawln s and )artlcularlv )ollll'fid out terminating in an oft-set grate supporting shoulder 2", the latter terminating in a secadapted to rest on the inner side of the cylindrical stove body, said second member'2", terminating in a second off-set shoulder 2, adapted to extend through the opening 1, and forming a stove supporting shoulder when set up. As a means of further securing the legs 2, the shoulder 2, terminates in an oif-set tongue portion 2, adapted to extend on the outer side of the stove body, as shown, and to prevent inward movement of the legs when set up and to interlock therewith, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4, of the drawings. Each leg terminates in a horizontally extending base member 2 i As a means of securing and locking the parts of the knock-down stove body and the detachable le s in position when assembled or set up, a removable grate 3, is inserted 'from the top of the cylindrical stove or heater body, the marginal edges of the grate 3, being adapted-to rest upon the grate supporting shoulders 2, of the legs and prevent the inward movement of the legs and likewise the base portions of the two-part heater body with respect to the joint formed by the interlocking hooks 1 seen that the grate member 3, acts as a key or look for holding the removable legs and the base portion of the stove body in assembled position, and that when it is desired to disassemble the parts the grate 3, is first removed whereupon the legs 2, may be. moved inwardly to a substantially horizontal position and then withdrawing the tongue portions 2, through the openings 1 after which the base portions of the cylindrical parts may be moved inwardly to disconnect the .hooks 1. and if the upper portions of the hooks l have been secured by a securing elements, such as the cotter pin 1,
the latter may be removed and the parts of the stove may then be conveniently disassembled for storage or transportation.
. As a convenient means of carrying or lifting the portable stove with its fuel contents about from one place to another when assembled or set up, the sides of the heater It will thus be adapted to receive and contain thebearing ends of a suitable carrying bail 4c, and the improved portable stove is preferably provided with a lid 5, having a handle 6, said lid being useful in controlling the draft through the grate portion of the stove.
The base portion of the heater body 1, is provided with draft holes 1, Just above the grate 3, and may also be provided with pokerholes 1%.
From the foregoing description, taken in connectio with the accoii'ipanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention \vill be readily understood..
Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. An orchard heater, comprising a heater body provided with leg receiving openings, leg members removably mounted in the latter and provided with grate supporting shoulders, and a grate removably mounted on the latter and holding said .leg members in assembled position.
2. An orchard heater, comprising a twopart open ended cylindrical heater body, grate supporting legs having off set body and grate supporting shoulders arranged within the lower end of said heater body, and a grate mounted on said grate supporting. shoulders of said legs within said cylindricalbody and securing said legs and twopart body in assembled position. 5
3. In a portable stove, an open bottom stove body provided with openings about its lower marginal edges, legs provided with off-set stove body and grate supporting shoulders, said body supporting shoulders extending through said openings and said In testimony whereof I have afiiXed my signature.
