TANK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 1', 1920.
Application filed January 22, 1920. Serial No. 358,291.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. XARDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented or discovered certain new and. useful Improvements in Tanks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to tanks, and more particularly to that class of tanks used in automobiles for holding 'gasolene, and the invention has for its object to provide a tank of this class with means whereby it may be attached in place, as when suspended from a frame. To this end the 1mproved tank comprises a sheet metal body and relatively heavy metal end heads formed either by casting or forging and which heads are provided with integral brackets by which the tank may be mounted n place. To securely hold the end heads in them proper positions in the tank the sheet metal body of the tank, is preferably crimped against the inner peripheral edges of the end heads.
In the accompanying drawing, which is a sectional viewof the improved tank, 12 denotes the sheet metal body of the tank, and 13 the end heads thereof, said heads, which are of cast or forged metal, being provided with integral brackets 14 having holes or openings 15 for bolts or the like by which the tank may be attached in place or suspended from a frame. In order to Securely hold the end heads in place the sheet metal body of the tank is preferably provided with indented crimped portions 16 which engage the inner peripheral shouldenparts or edges of the heads 15 and thus, 1n cooperation with the out-turned flanges 17 on the heads and the locking hooked portions 18 on the tank body, hold the heads in place, notwithstanding the strain said heads may be subjected to in sustaining the weight of the tank and its contents. The improved tank is preferably provided with a bafile late such as is covered by my U. S. Patent in). 1,310,517.
The supporting brackets 14: extend outward horizontally from the heads 13 and are preferably located above the central portions of said heads, so that the center of gravity of the tank will be below the supports therefor.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the integral brackets 14 with which the forged or' cast metal heads 13 are provided,
afford convenient means for mounting the tanks in place, and that the crimped portions 16 of the tank body 12, in cooperation withtflanges 17 and hooked parts 16, afiording interlocking joints, serve to hold the heads 13 firmly in place.
Having thus described 111 claim and desire to secure by 1. A tank consisting of relatively heavy metal end heads provided with integral,
invention, I
tters Patent horizontally extending brackets located above the central portions of said end heads and by means of which brackets said tank may be mounted or secured in place,
and a relatively light sheet metal body portion interlocked with said heads.
2. A tank consisting of relatively heavy metal end heads provided with integral horizontally extending brackets located above the central-portions of said end heads and by means of which brackets said tank may be mounted or secured in place, and a relatively light sheet metal body portion interlocked with said heads, the said sheet metal body portion being crimped or indented so as to abut against the inner peripheral shoulder parts of the said end heads and thus serving, in cooperation with the interlocked parts of said heads and body, to securely hold the said heads in place.
3. A tank consisting of relatively heavy end heads having integral, horizontally extending brackets projecting outward from said heads and provided with openings, adapted to receive bolts or the like, and with out-turned flanges, and a sheet metal body portion having hooked portions interlocked with said flanges and having also indented crimped portions engaging shoulders on said heads.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature,
