Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 24, 1919. Serial No. 325,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Jos rH WHITE and WILLIAM- EGKHABD, 1 citizens of the 4 United States, residing at Piscataway township, in the State of New Jersey, and Plainfield, county of Union, State of New Jersey, respectively, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet gages and particularly to improvements in the form of gage illustrated in the prior patent of J oseph White, No, 1,178,563, granted April 11, 1916.. I
One of the objects of our invention is to provide a gage which will be moved out of the way of the sheet, positioned thereagainst, very rapidly and certainly and at the last possible moment. Another object of our invention is to provide a gage of the above described character which can also be adjusted so that the distance which it extends across the sheet path can be adjusted.
With these and other objects in view,our invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more .fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a portion of a feeding apparatus embodying our present invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, withparts broken away, of Fig. 1.

, As will be seen by a comparison of Fig. a of said prior Patent No. 1,178,563, many of the parts illustrated inthis application are identical with the parts shown in said patent, and for amore detailed description of said parts reference is made to said patent.

Pivoted at 25 on the bracket 22 is a member 26 having a roller 27 and a projection 28 beneath and in contact with the gage 17. A bracket29 connected to the bracket 22 serves as the abutment for a spring 30 surrounding a rod 31 connected to the member 26, the pressure of the spring 30 being transmitted through a pin 32 passing through the rod 31. The lower endof the rod 3l is screw threaded and provided with an adjusting nut 33 which, by contact 'below up to the gage, we prefer to provide with the lower side of the bracket 29, limits an over guide 40 of the type illustrated in nut 33 provides a ready means to this end.
The gage 17 rests by gravity on the projection 28 ofthe member 26, butif desired a spring, such as a coil spring around the pivot 18, may be provided to assist the pull of gravity to keep the gage 17 always in contact with the member 26. As described in. said prior patent, the over-guide 40 is said prior Patent No. 1,178,563, which will i lifted when the sheet is being taken by the grippers 14, but since this entire construction as well as the wipers by which the front of the sheet is surely positioned against the gage 17, are fully described in said prior patent, it will be unnecessary to repeat such description here.
In order to remove the gage 17 from the path of the sheet as the latter is taken by the grippers 14, we prefer to move the gage by the direct action of the closing of the grippers and preferably by means of a cam 45 attached to the gripper shaft 13 and arranged to contact with the roller 27 on the member 26 just at the instant that the grippers close on the sheet against the abutments 12. It will be understood that the cylinder 10 in the form illustrated, is moving continuously so that the motion given to the roller 27 results from the composite movement due to the turning of the gripper shaft 13 and also to rotation of the cylinder. Nevertheless, the action of lifting the gage can be made very rapid with the arrangement described, and consequently such gage can be allowed to remain in front of the sheet until substantially the instant that the sheet starts forward, by reason of its being gripped by the grippers 14.
We claim:
1. A continuously moving sheet carrier having sheet grippers thereon, a sheet gage to position a sheet in position to be taken by said grippers and means,'operated by the closing of said grippers, to move said gage out of the path of the sheet. I
2. A sheet carrier having a gripper shaft with sheet grippers thereon, a sheet gage to position a sheet in position to be taken by said grippers, and a cam on said shaft, adapted to move said gage out of the path of the sheet as the grippers close on the sheet.
3. A sheet carrier having a gripper shaft with sheet grippers thereon, a sheet gage to position a sheet in position to be taken by said grippers, a yieldingly mounted member adapted to hold said gage in its gaging position, and a cam on said shaft adapted to contact with said yieldingly mounted member to move said gage out of the path of the sheet as the grippers close on the sheet.
4. A sheet carrier having a gripper shaft with sheet grippers thereon, a sheet gage to position a sheet in position to be taken by said grippers, means to shift said gage to change its gaging position, a yieldingly mounted member adapted to hold said gage in its gaging position, and a cam on said shaft adapted to contact with said yieldingly mounted member to move said gage out of the path of the sheet as thegrippers close on the sheet.
5. A sheet carrier having a gripper shaft with sheet grippers thereon, a sheet gage support, a sheet gage pivotally mounted thereon, said support being movable in the direction of the travel of the sheet to change the gaging position of said gage, a yieldingly mounted pivoted member adapted to hold said gage in gaging position and to permit its gaging position to be changed, and a cam on said shaft adapted to contact with said yieldingly mounted member to move said gage out of the path of the sheet as the grippers close on the sheet.
6. A sheet carrier having a gripper shaft with sheet grippers thereon, a sheet gage to position a sheet in position to be taken by said grippers, a yieldingly mounted member adapted to hold said gage in its gaging position, a cam on said shaft adapted to contact with said yieldingly mounted member to move said gage out of the path of the sheet as the grippers close on the sheet, and means to adjust the normal position of said yieldingly mounted member to limit the distance which said gage shall extend across the path of the sheet when in gaging position.
7. A sheet carrier having a gripper shaft with sheet grippers thereon, asheet gage support, a sheet gage pivotally mounted thereon, said support being movable in the direction of the travel of the sheet to change the gaging position of said gage, a yieldingly mounted pivoted member adapted to hold said gage in gaging position and to permit its gaging position to be changed, a cam on said shaft adapted to contact with said yieldingly mounted member to move said gage out of the path of the sheet as the grippers close on the sheet, and means to adjustthe normal position of said yieldingly mounted member to-limit the distance which said gage shall extend across the path of the sheet when in gaging position.
8. A sheet gage support, a sheet gage pivotally mounted thereon, a yieldingly mounted member adapted to hold said gage in gaging position and means to move said yieldingly mounted member to permit said gage to move out ofthe path of the sheet.
9. A sheet gage support, a sheet gage pivotally mounted thereon, a yieldingly mounted member adapted to hold said gage in gaging position, means to move said yieldingly mounted member to permit said gage to move out of the path of the sheet, and means to adjust the normal position of said yieldingly mounted member to limit the distance which said gage shall extend across the path of the sheet when in gaging position. i
10.
