To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, OSCAR A. SHAW, a citizenofth'e United'states, residing at Atclear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in chairs and the principal object of the invention is to provide a chair which is particularly adapted for use by hair dressers and the like.

Another object of the invention 1s to provide a chair in which the seat is vertically adjustable and may be also moved toward or away from the chair.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a chair having a back which is arranged to be swung into a horizontal position to form a shelf.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair constructed in accordance with this invention,

Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view partly in section illustrating the carriage and its supporting means.

Referring to the'drawing the numeral 1 designates the main frame of the shaft which is supported on suitable legs 2 pro vided with casters 3. A platform 4: is supported on the upper side of the main frame and a cabinet 5 is provided, the rear side of which rests against the upper portion 6 of the rear legs 2. A suitable shelf or apron 7 is attached to one of the portions 6 and is supported on a suitable plate 8, the lower edge of which rests on the top of cabinet 5. The cabinet is provided with suitable drawers 9 for containing various tools and articles used in the operation to be performed. Secured to the side bars 11 of the frame 1 are suitable channel bars 12 in which the rollers 13 are mounted on the axles 14: which in turn are mounted in suitable bearlngs 15 formed on the carriage 16, are adapted to run. It will thus be seen that the carriage will be free to move longitudinally in the frame. Extending downwardly from the under side of the carriage 'is a pair of spaced guides 17 between which a bar 18 operates. This bar 18 is connected by a suitable arm 19 to the lower end of the lever 20 which is pivoted as at 21 to one side of the main frame.

It will thus be seen, that upon oscillating the lever 20, the carriage will be moved forwardly or rearwardly according to the direction of movement of the lever.

The carriage is provided with a central threaded collar through which the standard 22 is threaded. The upper end of this standard is provided with a head 23 which is attached to the under side of a seat 24: of the chair designated generally by the numeral 25 which chair comprises the seat having a pair of studs projecting laterally therefrom, the use of which will appear as the description proceeds.

A suitable pair of hooks 27 are attached to the side edges of the seat adjacent its forward edge and these hooks cooperate with the studs in supporting the back in a hori- Zontal position when the same is used as a shelf.

The chair back is designated generally by the numeral 28 and comprises a frame 29 having attached thereto the forwardly extending arms 30 which are provided at their forward ends with the standard 31 having hooks at their lower ends which engage over the studs 26 and support the back in proper position. A pair of links 32 connects the lower terminals of the standard 31 with the back frame 29 and it will thus be seen that when the back is thrown into the position illustrated in Fig. 3, the frame will be sup ported in a horizontal position thus providing a shelf for the support of various articles placed thereon.

It will be apparent from the foregoing, that in use, the seat is adjusted to the proper height and it may then be moved forwardly or rearwardly with relation to the main frame and cabinet by the operation of the lever 20. It will also be apparent that the back may be thrown into the position illustrated in Fig. 3 and a person occupying the seat will then turn around so as to face the cabinet and the chair back may be then used as a tray for the support of various implemerits and tools which may be used.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. a

What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a carriage slidable in the frame, a vertically adjustable standard in the carriage, a seat at the upper end of the standard, studs extending outwardly from the side edgesof the seat, a back, arms extending forwardly from the back, standards connected to the forward ends of the arms and being attached to the studs to allow the back to be swung toward the forward edge of the seat and into a horizontal position and hooks attached to the side edges of the seat adjacent its forward edge for supporting the back in a horizontal position.

A chair comprising a frame, a platform secured to the upper side of the frame, a carriage longitudinally slidable in the frame, a vertically adjustable standard on the carriage, a seat at the upper end of the standard, a cabinet at the rear end of the frame and projecting above the platform and an apron attached to the frame at one side thereof and spaced upwardly above the platform.

A device of the class described comprising a frame, a carriage slidable in the frame, a vertically adjustable standard in the carriage, a seat at the upper end of the standard, a back and side member pivotally mounted on the sides of said seat, means for supporting the back in horizontal position to serve as a shelf, standards connected to the forward ends of the side arms and mounted to permit swinging of said back to its horizontal position, and means for sliding said carriage within said frame.

A chair comprising aframe, a platform secured to the upper side of the frame, a carriage longitudinally slidable in the frame, a vertically adjustable standard on the carriage, a seat at the upper end of the standard, an interchangeable back and shelf mounted on said seat, and a cabinet at one end of the frame.
