SHOE-SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 9, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDnns G. MALMBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Sewing-Vlachine Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to sole channel cutting attachments for shoe sole sewing machines, preferably of the Goodyear type.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character wherein, on the sole sewing during the operation of the sewing machine, the sole will be channeled for the insetting of the stitches, the channel being continuous and the cutting thereof is had when the shoe is at a standstill so that the feeding of the stock is not retarded in the machine as the cutter will be raised and inactive while the stock is being fed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character wherein the cutter channels the sole immediately in front of the needle in the sole sewing machine, thereby eliminating any chance for the needle to cut on the side as it follows in the channel throughout the working of the machine, and such attachment also serves as a presser foot when the cutter'is inactive or during the action of the cutter.
A. further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form and is readily mounted in shoe sewing machine, particularly of the Goodyear type, so that the sole of a shoe will be channeled or a kerfcut therein continuously during the operation of the machine, the cutter being readily rendered inactive when the occasion requires.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character which serves a dual function, that is to say, a presser foot and a channel cutter for a sole sewing machine, the parts of said attachment being cooperatively assembled to effect the proper working thereof at all times during the operation of the sewing machine.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation,

strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and'arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally a portion of the frame work of the sole sewing machine to support the working parts, and upon this frame work is journaled the main shaft B, while forwardly of the latter is the awl segment C to which is attached the awl D, the awl segment, being driven in the usual well known manner, while E is the movable presser foot holder adapted to coact with a work support F for the sole stock of a shoe to be stitched on the operation of the sole stitching machine, which is of the usual well known construction. Mounted upon the presser foot holder E is the sole channel looking foot 11 having a slot 12 through which works the channel cutting plate 13, the same being formed with a guide 14 which slides in a guideway 15 provided in the plate 10 and opening through one face thereof. The blade 13 near its upper end is formed with opposed notches 16 in which is received the bifurcated or forked end 17 of a leaf spring 18 which is made fastin the plate 10 through the medium of a set screw 19 tapped therein, the spring 18 being designed to normally hold the cutter blade 13 raised so as not to protrude through the slot 12 in the presser foot 11, the blade being actuated in a manner presently described. Formed at the rear edge near the free end of the presser foot 11 is a bearing 20 in which is received one end of an adjusting screw 21, the same being also journaled in the plate 18 and is formed with an externally knurled finger engaging knob or head 22 so that the screw 21 can be readily turned. Loosely mounted for rocking movement upon the non-threaded portion 23 of the adjusting screw 21 is a cam actuated twopart lever, the parts 24 and 25 of which are pivoted at 26 to each other, while interposed between the parts 24 and 25 is a leaf spring 27 which is fixed to one part thereof and acts against the other, and likewise arranged between the plateflO and the part 25 adjacent thereto of the lever is a leaf spring 28 which works against the said part 25 so that by the action of the adjusting screw 21 the end 29 of the part 25 of the cam actuated lever canbe thrown into engagement in a notch 30 in the plate 13 or out of engagement therewith so that in this manner the said blade 13 will be acted upon by the cam actuated lever or released there-- by, the cam actuated lever being operated in a manner presently described,
Rotatably mounted on the pivot 26 connectin the parts 24 and 25 of the cam actuated lever is a cam rider31 which is in the form of a block adapted to travel upon a cam surface 32 formed on the hub 33 of the awl segment C which, when'reciprocated, rocks the, lever constituting the parts 24 and 25 for actuating the cutter blade 13 when the end 29 of the part 25 of said lever is engaged in the notch 30 in the blade, thereby permitting the blade to cut a kerf in the stock sole of a shoe when resting upon the work support F, and this kerf or channel is made in the sole in advance of the half of the awl D and the sewing needle of the lock stitching machine so that the stitches will become embedded in the channel or kerf during the stitching operation of said machine. On the adjustment of the screw 21 the cam actuated lever can be thrown out of engagement with the blade 13 so that the same will be rendered inactive and the spring 18 connected with said blade will hold the same in raised position, and in this event the presser foot 11 on the plate 10 will engage the stock and act thereon during the stitching of a shoe sole in the usual manner by the machine. 7 V a The adjusting screw 21 is threaded in the plate 10 and on the turning thereof advances the part 25 of the cam actuated lever in one direction so as to disengage the end 29 of said part from the notch'30 and thereby free the knifeblade, while .on turning the screw in the reverse direction the spring I 27 becomes active to automatically move'the part 25 in position to have its end 29 engaged in the notch for rendering the knife blade 13 active. Itis of'course understood that the presser foot holder E is operated in the usual manner during the sole stitching of the machine. i i i If the cutter should wear to any; extent, the loss can be made up by turning the rider 31 around once, which makes up the difference. As said rider has screw threaded connection with its supporting pin the rotation thereof will cause the rider to advance so that when it is engaged by the cam the two part lever will be rocked to a great extent and thus compensate for the wear of the cutter, p i 1 From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the herein described shoe ,solesewing attachment will be readilyapparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted. Having thus described my invention, I claim: v I I v 1. An attachment for sole stitching machines comprising a presser foot, a cutter carried thereby'for forming a channel in the sole before the stitching operation and auto-- matic means for rendering the cutter active and inactive as the machine operates.
