Description

HHHH E. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA o.
FRANK KOSTLAN, or maana, IOWA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patcnted May 25, 1920.,
Application filed February 2, 1920. Serial No. 355,628.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Kos'rLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Traer, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges, and more particularly to hinges provided with wings at an angle to the main plates, to give attachment to the hing'ed parts on two sides.
The Object of the invention is to improve the type of hinge described in my patent of May 30, 1905, numbered 791,033, for improvements in hinges.
In the use of the hinge set forth in said patent, time has disclosed a serious defect. The construction of the hinge is such that in one position the right-angled middle wing' lies between the enter wings, and flush with them. In the course of extended use the hinge has worn away somewhat at the joint, and this has caused the wings to overlap, so that the middle wing', instead o't' taking its place between the other wing's, abuts against them and the hinge cannot reach the full proper limit of its movement. This invention is designed to remedy this detect in the hinge as heretofore constructed, and as shown and described in the patcnt above referred to.
In the accompanying drawing, the improved hinge is shown in perspective in a single view.
The hinge is herein shown as formed of heavy sheet steel, and consists of two principal parts and a connecting hinge-pin.
One of the members has ears 5 which. are cylindrically formed to receive the pin 10, but each is extended at 6 at an angle to the main plate '7 (usually a right angle), and provided with holes 8 to receive screws The other member 11 has an ear 12 to receive the hinge-pin and this is extended in the same manner at 13. In practice this wing has been made as wide as the length of the ear, and provided with two screwholes. In 'the improved hinge the wing is reduced in length, leaving' an eXtension 14 at each end of the ear 12 to receive the wear upon its end, which in the case of vertically set hinges is more or less, depending on the weight of the hinged part and the amount of its swinging use.
It .is evident that the hinge as herein shown and desoribed will allow-for a ver protracted use of the hinge, and all the wear incident to such use without causin the wings 6 and 13 to abut against each other. A single hole for the serew 15 serves for the narrowed wing.
Having thus described my invention, I Claim:
A hinge, the pivotallv connected members of which have hinge-pin ears. with fastening win ,qs springing at 'a divergringz angle from each. car, for double attac ment around corners, the meeting' and passing:` wings being narrewed with respect to the adjacent ears, to prevent abuttingcontact of said wings as the ears wear endwise.
In testimony whereof: I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK KOSTLN.
VVitnesses:
