Be it known that I, JOHN VVALDHEIM, a citizen of the UnitedSta'tes, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewritin'g- Machines, of which the following is a specific ation.
My invention relates .to typewriting machines of the class wherein a plurality of separate and distinct printing mechanisms or devices are provided, any one of which may be operated .by a single set of key levers and from a single keyboard; so that a plurality of fonts of type differing in style from one another, .or fonts of type adapt-- certain improvements in and relating to typewriting machines of the type or class above referred to, the invention to which this present application relates being an improvement upon, the typewriter disclosed in my co-pending application, 20, 1918, Serial No. 223,489. 7
In the present application there is provided a plurality of printing devices, preferably in the form of type-sets,'each comprising a. type-segment carrying a pluralityof pivotally supported type-bars, said printing devices being supported in fixed relation to each other from and by the main frame of the machine, so that the main frame and the printing devices form a unitary structure; the printingmechanisms, each colle'ctively considered, being held in fixed and unchanging relation with the main frame and with each other.
Supported by and movable relatively to themain frame of the'typewriter, is a supplemental frame,'which carries aset of key levers, whereby any one of the printing .devices may be operated,'.a carriage for supporting a work-sheet to be typed upon, and
means for regulating and controlling the movement of the carriage to secure a proper spacing of the characters impressed upon the WOI'k-Sllt; the supplemental frame together with the key levers, the carriage, and
the elements concerned with the movement thereof, forming a second unitary structure movable relatively to the main frame and to the printing devices supported thereby, in order to bring a worksheet carried by the carriage into positions such that it may be typed by any one of said printing devices, and into positions such that the particular printing mechanism selected for use niay be operated by the key levers.
The various elements and groups of elements carried by. the supplemental frame are therefore held in permanent relation to one another, and move in unison relatively to the stationary printing mechanisms carried by the main-frame of the machine; the printing mechanisms being arranged side by side and the movement of the supplemental frame taking place in a direction parallel with the axis of a platen carried by-the carriage.
The supplemental frame carries escapement mechanism for regulatingthe movement of the carriage for letter-spacing. Suitable line-spacing mechanism for rotating the platen may also be provided, which mechanism, however, is not illustrated in detail herein. A single escapement is'used,
but each type-set is shown as provided with a separate universal bar, segmental in form and pivotallysupported from the type-bar supporting-segment thereof; the escapement mechanism being brought into position so that it may be operated by the universal bar of the'particular type-set selected for use as the supplemental frame is moved to bring the type-set in question;

Motionmay be transmitted from the key mediate levers operatively connected with "the type-bars, a set of intermediate levers being provided for each separate type-set.
The key levers-are moved into operative relation with the set ofintermediate levers associated with the type-bars of the typeset selected for use by moving the supplethe key levers-into operative relation with levers to the-type-vbars through sets of intermental frame, as above explained; and suitable locking mechanism is shown as provided for locking the supplemental frame in positions to secure the proper operation of each type-set, and for .releasing the same when it is desired to change to and towrite with anothertype-set.

upper ends of said levers being operativel connected with thet e-bars by a: pin-an slot connection 27. hese-bell-crank levers are themselves pivotally s1 ported at 28 in a slotted bar 29extendin 'hetween andthe ends of which are secure to the sidemembers 4 of the mainframe of the machine.
Thebell-crank levers 26 are operated by means of a series of levers30, the rear ends of which are pivot-ally sup orted at 31in a1 slotted bar, 32 extending tween and'the ends of which are connected with the side of said levers bein 'guidediby a slotted guide 33, theends 0 which are also secured to the side members 4. The levers 30are operatively connected with-the forwardly-ex tending arms o-f'the' bell-crank levers26 b pin-and-slot connections 34, from which it follows that downward movement imparted to the forward ends of thesaid levers will operate the type-bars 23 through the bellcrank levers-26. The free ends of the typemembers 4 of the main frame, the front ends bars 23 are supported in type-baskets 34 when in their lowermost position as shown,
one such basket being provided for each type-set; and guides '35 for guiding the free bars of each type-set, although a part only of said levers, as well as of the type-bars themselves, are shown in the drawings.
The supplemental frame 8 serves as a support for a plurality of key-levers 36, part only ofwhich is shown, the forward ends of which levers carry keys 37 which constias we tute the keyboard of the machine, and the rear ends of which levers are pivotally supported on a rod 38. and in slots provided in a forwardly-projecting rib upon therear connecting bar 11 of. the supplemental frame; the key-levers being. guided adjacent their forward ends by a slotted guide 39 extending between the side members 9 of the supplemental frame.
The key-levers 36 are each provided with upwardly-extending portions terminating in hooks 41, which hooks may be brought into position above either set of operating levers 30, which operate the type-bars of their associated printing mechanisms or type-sets above referred to,,bymoving the supplemental frame to one .side or the other of the main frame of the machine; whereupon, and as the key-levers are depressed, the type-bars ofthe particular typeset selected for 'use may. be operated. a suitable stop by means of a spring 50, the effect of which is to hold the free end 44 of the pawl 42 in engagement with. a slot 45. Preferably a smooth rib 51 is provided which extends between the slots '45, so that after the pawl 42 has been moved out of engagement with the slot 45 and the supplemental frame moved slightly, the free end of the pawl may be permitted to rest uponstops 45* against which ployed, although only one is shown, which v members aresupported by a shaft 53 supporte'din bearings provided upon the standards 14, and the forward ends of which members carry a shifting rail 54 through which vertical movement is transmitted tothe'platen 17 tomove itinto its. upper and lower-case positions; said rocking members 52 being operated by shift levers 55 carried by the supplemental frame, and which shift levers transmit motion to-the rocking'menn bers through upwardly-extending arms 55,

Carried by the rear ,connecting member 11 is a bracket 56 which serves as a support for the escapement mechanism for regulating the movement of the carriage, which" mechanism, therefore,"partakes of the move ment of the supplemental frame 8.
The escapement or letter-feeding mechanism itself may be of' any suitable form.
As shown, however, said mechanism comprises fixedand movable dogs 57, 58 carried by a dog rocker 59, and which dogs are T adapted to engage the teeth of an escapement wheel 60 supported by the bracket 56; said escapement'wheel being geared to the carriage'15 through a pinion'fil'in engagemerit with a rack 62 pivotally mounted on, the carriage 15. The dogs 57 and58 are operated by means of a reciprocating intermediate member'63 pivotally supported by a link 64 and arms 65 carried by a pivotally supported rocker, ,in order that its movements may be maintained parallel, which in-';
termediate member is operatively associated with the dogs.

This parallel mechanism is not illustratedin detail 'in the drawings accompanying this application, as the -same may be identical in construction and operawhich it will be appreciated that as the supplemental frame '8 is moved from side to side of the main frame'of the machine, the
reciprocating member 63 will be moved therewith, and will be brought into positions adjacent one or the other of the bars70 of the universal bars of the two type-sets, so that motion will be transmitted to the single es'capement mechanism of the machine by the universal bar of the particular type-set or printing mechanism selected for use.
The reciprocating member 63, in addition to being operable by the universal bars 66 as above pointed out, may also be operated through a depending arm 71 of the rocker which carries the arm 65, said arm 71 being engaged by'a finger 7 2 with which the spacebar 73 of the keyboard is operatively connected, to thereby provide for spacing the carriage between .words or independently of the typeset s. The connections intermediate the space-bar and the reciprocating member 63 comprise a lever 73 pivotally supported on the rod 38. v v The end portions 4 of the main frame of the machine should permit the ends of the connecting bar 11- to move beyond them, to
which end they are shown as providedwith' j openings 74 so located, and of'suclfa size This feature provides for ,a. reduction in width of "the main frame of the .machine. 1 and necessitates the use of a main frame of that the ends of the connecting-bar of the supplemental frame may extend 'therethrough when said frame is in either one of,

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriter-of the class described, a main frame; a plurality of printing de' vices carried by said main frame and secured in fixed relation thereto and to one another; a supplemental frame carrying a set of key-levers, and work-sheet supporting and advancing mechanism, the two (said key-levers and said mechanism) being connected together in fixed relation with one bring a work-sheet into positions such that it may be typed upon by any one of said printing. devices; and means whereby said set of key-levers may be operatively conanother andadapted to move in unison t nected with the particular printing device selected for use.
2. In a typewriter a mainframe; a plurality of type-sets carof the class described,

In a typewriting machine of theclass described, a main frame; a plurality of printing devices carried by said main frame and secured in fixed position relatively thereto and to one another; a supplemental frame movable relatively to said main frame; means for guiding said supplemental frame in its movements; a set of key-levers carried by said, supplemental frame and movable therewith into operative relation with each of said printing devices; a carlevers, said supplemental frame also includriage carried by said supplemental frame ing a carriage having a platen, and escapeand movable therewith to bring a platen ment mechanism for controlling the movecarried thereby into. operative relation with v ment of said carriage; means, for locking said supplemental frame and main frame together in positions such that a work-sheet carried by said carriage may be typed upon by any one of said printing devices; and means whereby the movement of said carriage is controlled by the particular printing device selected for use.
6. In a typewriter of the class described, a main frame haying two guides spaced apart from one another;-a bar carried by said main frame; a plurality of type-sets secured to said bar and arranged side by side, and each of which comprises a plurality of pivotally supported type-bars and means for operating the same; a supplemental frame movable relatively to said main frame and guided by said guides, and I which supplemental frame carries a setof key-levers and work-sheet supporting and advancing mechanism, the two being connected togetherin fixed relation with one another and adapted to move in unison to bring a work-sheet into positions such that r it may be typed upon by any one of said type-sets; and means whereby said setv pf. key-levers may be operatively connected with the particular type-set selected for use.

In a typewriting machine. the combination with a platen, ofa plurality of type-sets arranged side by side. means for actuating said -type-sets individually, a carriage for said platen, letter-feeding mechanism for saidcarriage. means supporting said platen to enable it to move from one type-set to another and connections in said supporting means adapted to maintain the relation between said carriage and said feeding mechanism when so moved.
19. The combination with a platen, of a plurality of type-sets, a single set of typekeys, a frame supporting said keys and said platen and adapted to permit the platen to travel thereon, means for moving said frame to render said keys effective with any one of said type-sets to print upon the platen, a case-shift rail for the platen forming part of thev frame and movingtherewith, and case-shift keys moving with the frame and adapted to operate said rail.
20, The combination with a platen, of a plurality-of type-sets, a single set of typekeys, a frame supporting said keys and said platen and adapted to permit the platen to travel thereon, means for moving said frame to render said keys effective with any one of said type-sets to print upon the platen, a case-shift rail for the platen, and case-shift keys moving with the frame and connected to operate said rail.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a main frame, ofa carriage comprising a platen, a secondary frame in which said carriage is adapted to travel, rails in the main frame upon which the secondary frame is adapted to travel, a rail in the secondary frame upon which the carriageis adapted to travel, a rail in the main frame upon which the carriage is adapted to travel, and an escapement mechanism for the carriage in the secondary frame.
22. The combination with a platen, of a plurality of sets of type-bars, a single set of keys, a carriage for the platen, a universal bar for each set of type-bars, a single escapement device for the carriage, comprising a reciprocating member, a main frame, and a secondary frame carrying said keys, said platen, and said escapement device, and adapted to be arrested to enable either of said type-bar sets to print upon the letterspace at which the platen is held by the escapement device, and bringing the corresponding universal bar adjacent the escapement reciprocating member to actuate the escapement device.
