Description

Patented May 18, 1920.
- W/T/VESSES l/VVEN 70H I 540W W5 ATTORNEYS "WILTON F. JENKINS, 0F BICHMQND, VIl'tG-ZETIA.
ins-once,
Specification of Letters Patent.
J i J 1 i atented re, M226 Application filed llIay 3, 1919. Serial No. 294,536.
1 b all 10. mm, it may concern.
Be it known that I, lVILToN F. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and the State of irginia, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Temperaturelndicators for r-Xutomobile-Radiators, of which the following a specification.
This invention is an improvedtemperature indicator for automobile radiators.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an indicator which will exhibit a. column ofstea m to the driver of the automobile immediately the. radiator begins to boil.
Another object offlthe invention is to prorice a radiator" cap ivith means whereby a column of steam will be exhibited as soon. as the radiator begins to boil, so that the driver will be informed either in the day time or at night of the fact that the Water is boiling.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved temperature indicator of the'class described which will be exceed ingly simple, durable, efficient 'in operation and inexpensive to manufacture and maintain. V
With these and other objects in View, which willbecome apparent as-the description proceeds, the invention resides in tie construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures of which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the radiator of an automobile-equipped with an automobile temperature indicator con structed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical section view of the invention. n
Referring more particularly to the draxw ing, I'providc a radiator cap 5 with a corn trul opening (3 through which an exteriorly threaded tube 7 is passed. This tube is on larged at its lower end as at 8 to provide a shoulder 9 engaging against the under face of the cap The bore 10 of the tube is branched as at 11 at a point below the shoulder 9, and the enlarged end 8 of the tube, below the branches 11,,is provided with n circular bnflic plate 12.
- cap tube 13 iuteriorly threaded at its the restricted invention and the scope of the lower end as at 15%, is screwed onto the upper end of the tube 7, and carries the washer 15 forming a tight fit between the tube and the radia tor cap. The upper end of the cap tube is provided with a restricted. port 16 of a diameter less than thediameter or"; the bore 10 of the tube 7.
Inoperation, as soon as the water begins to boil, the steam Will pass up through the annular space between the bailie plate and the interior of the radiator find its way through the branches 11 and the bore of the tube 7, into the cap tube 13 and out in the form of a column through portlo. 'By reason of the fact that the port 16 is of a relatively small area as compared with the bore of the tube 7, the pressure Within the tube 13 will be built up suficiently to eject the steam in a column up through theport 16. This column of Will immediately notify the driver, in the daytime, or at night, of the fact that the Wateris boiling. exhibited at night by reason o the fact that the column will show up clearly against the rays from the'head lights. I T he baffle plate 12, While allowing a ready passage of steam through the'tubes, will prevent Water from being splashed up through the branches 11. inte the tubes.
.The portion 18 of enlarged end 8 of the tube, below the bathe plate 12 is preferably polygonal in conformation so as to form a nut- 'for receiving a Wrench in assisting the assembly of the device. Similarly the cap tube may be made polygonal in form at a suitable point as at 19.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment ofmy invention, 1 may desire tomake such changes in theconstruction, combination and arrangement of parts there,- of as do not depart from the spirit of the appended claims. I claim 7 1. The combination with a radiator cap, of a tube extending therethrough and havi 11;; an enlarged lower end providing a shoul dcr engaging against the under surface of the cap, the bore of the tube being branched at a point below the shoulder, a bufde plate arranged below the branches of the bore for preventing water being splashed into the tube and a cap tube arranged on the upper side otthe radiator cap and engaging the cap, and will I.
It "will be first said tube and provided with a restricted port of a diameter less than the diameter of the first said tube.
with lateral branches opening within the cap, an outwardly extending balfie plate carried. by the tube below said branches, and a cap tube arranged on the radiator cap and engaging said first named tube, said cap tube being provided with a small port.
4. The combination with a radiator cap,
of a tube extending therethrough and having a bore terminating at its lower end in lateral branches opening w1th1n the cap, an
outwardly extending baffle plate formed integrally upon said tube below said branches, and a cap tube on the upper end of said first named tube provided with a port.
