CORNELL FLAG-STAT), OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIG-NOR OF FORTY-FIVE'PER GENT. T0 HENRY THORSGARD AND KNUT THORSGARD AND TEN PER CENT. TO ARTHUR MARKVE, ALL OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
DRAFT-CREATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed March 21, 1919. Serial No. 284,162.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CORNELL F LAGSTAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful DraftCreating Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for creating draft in stove pipes and other draft pipes from stoves or furnaces; and the ob jeet is to provide improved means for creating or increasing the draft in such pipes.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1, is a top or end view of a stove pipe provided with my invention; Fig. 2, is a section on the line 2-2, in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 3 designates a section of an ordinary stove pipe, representing also, other smoke-stacks or smoke passages leading from a stove or furnace (not shown).
Suitably arranged in one side of the pipe 3, is a casing 4, in which is mounted to rotate a fan 5, having a shaft 6, extending outward through the outer side of the easing, and provided with a pulley 7 which pulley represents any suitable means for rotating the fan shaft. The inner end of the shaft is journaled in the inner side or wall 8, of the casing. Said wall is provided with inlet apertures 9, and the top 10 of the easing is permanently open.
Above the apertures 9, is journaled in the pipe a horizontal shaft 11, having a handle 12, between which and the pipe is a compressed coil spring 13, by which the shaft is held frictionally, against accidental turning. On said shaft is fixed a metallic leafshaped or apron-shaped damper 14. i I
In the operation, when the draft in the fire is normal or satisfactory, the damper 14 is turned to the position shown in dotted line in Fig. 2, so it closes the apertures 9, and the fan is kept idle; but if the fire is sluggish or poor the damper 14 is raised nearly to a horizontal position, where the side of the pipe 3 or any other suitable obstruction prevents it from swinging too far upward, and the fan is started, with the result that a strong draft is created through the openings 9 and 10, and thereby in the whole pipe. When such extra draft is no longer required, the fan is stopped and the damper 14, turned to its vertical position again.
The form and location of the fan and fan casing, can of course be considerably varied without diverging from the scope and spirit of the invention, but it is not practical to illustrate and describe all such variations in a patent.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a main draft pipe from a stove or other furnace, of a fan casing in one side of said pipe, a rotary fan mounted in the casing, and having a shaft extending through the side of the pipe, and outside thereof, provided with means for rotating it; said fan casing having a permanently open discharge outlet in its top, and a latoral intake opening in the side disposed toward the center of the pipe; a leaf-shaped valve hinged near above the intake opening and provided with ashaft in the hinged end, said shaft having a handle outside the pipe, and means for automatically holding said shaft in any desired position; said valve being arranged and adapted to close alternately either the said intake or the main passage through the pipe.
2. The structure specified in claim 1, said main passages being otherwise clear and unobstructed above and below said valve.
3. The structure specified in claim 2, said valve being so formed and arranged as to prevent its turning above its position for closing the main passage.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CORNELL FLAGSTAD.
