SAW-OILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed February 8, 1919. Serial No. 275,803.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. SPEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Oilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
The invention relates to an oiling device and more particularly to the class of lubricators for hand saws.
The primary object of the inventionis, the provision of a lubricator of this character, wherein the same is conveniently mounted on a saw so that it can be actuated by the user of the saw to discharge the desired amount of oil on to the blade thereof, without the necessity of removing the hand from the handle of the saw, thereby eliminating the necessity of the use of an oil can or the like, in the ordinary manner for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is, the provision of a device of this character, wherein both sides of the saw blade can be properly oiled at the same time with despatch, the device being of novel construction for the convenient operation thereof and to assure the thorough oiling of the blade of the saw when the occasion requires.
A further object of the invention is, the provision of a device of this character, wherein the same is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily mounted upon a saw, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its purpose and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1, is a fragmentary elevation of a hand saw showing the lubricator constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2, is a vertical transverse sectional view through the lubricator mounted on the saw.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A, designates generally a portion of an ordinary hand saw blade, and B the handle of which is mounted thereon in the usual manner, the latter being fitted with a lubricator hereinafter fully described.
The lubricator comprises an oil container or reservoir 5 which has passed centrally therethrough a piston cylinder 6, the latter being integrally formed with the reservoir and is provided with an internally threaded upper open end 7 for detachably receiving a substantially cup shaped cap 8 which is threaded in the end 7 and has formed therein a stufling box or gland 9, through which works the piston plunger or stem 10 which slides centrally through the cap 8 and carries on its inner end the piston 11 which reciprocates within the piston cylinder 6, as will be apparent.
The opposite end of the piston cylinder 6 is screw threaded at 12 for detachably receiving the head or cap 13, of a duplex or spaced parallel discharge spouts 14: which are adapted to straddle the saw blade A to lie contiguous to opposite faces thereof and these spouts 14: are outwardly tapered and in the inner sides thereof near the free smaller ends of the same are outlet slots 15 for the emitting of the lubricant therethrough, on to opposite faces of the saw blade in the operation of the lubricator.
The stem or plunger 10 has fitted on its outer end a push button or head 16, the same being provided on its under side with a seat 17 for receiving one end of a coiled expansion spring 18 which surrounds the plunger or stem 10 and has its opposite end engaged with the cap 8 and this spring 18 automatically moves the plunger outwardly within the cylinder 6, the latter being formed with an opening 19 establishing communication between the reservoir 5 and said cylinder so that oil within the reservoir can passtherefrom into the cylinder to be forced through the spouts 14 by the inward move ment of the stroke of the piston 11 for lubricating the saw blade.
At one side of the reservoir is a filling nipple 20 closed by a removable screw" threaded plug 21, which on the removal thereof permits the introduction of oil through the nipple 20 into the reservoir 5 for the filling thereof.
The lower portion of the cylinder 6 beneath the reservoir 5' is fitted within a suitable opening formed in the handle B of the saw to be carried thereby and the spouts 14 lie in close parallel relation to the opposite sides of the blade A, so that on manual operation of the piston by pressing inwardly upon the head 16 of the stem or plunger 10 thereof, oil will be forced from the cylinder 6 through the spouts 14: on to the saw blade A for lubricating opposite sides thereof in a single operation of the lubricator.
The reservoir 5 permits lubricant to be stored for a considerable length or period of time and when the lubricator is to be actuated to lubricate the saw blade the operator simply pushes inwardly upon the button or head 16 to force the piston 11 inwardly in the cylinder 6 until the desired amount of lubricant is forced through the spouts 14 and discharged through the slots 15 on to the opposite sides of the blade A of the saw, and the releasing of the button or head 16 enables the spring 18 to perform its required function and set the plunger for the next further operation.
It is obvious that the lubricator can be operated over and over again as long as the supply of oil is within the reservoir.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a hand saw having a blade and handle, of a lubricatingdevice fitting into a socket formed in the handle and provided with a closed inner end having outlet openings, an internally threaded head fitting into the inner end portion of the socket of the handle and having threaded connection with the inner end portion of the cylinder, outlet spouts extending from the head upon opposite sides of the
