C. A. CARSCADIN & G. A. WOODMAN.
DRAFT GEAR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 18, I916.
1,Q39,%60I, Patented Sept. 11, 1917.
CHARLES A. CARSGADIN AND A. WOODMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T6 AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
A. CORPOBATIQN OF NEW JERSEY.
DRAFT-GEAR.
Application filed March 18, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES A. Cans- CADIN and Gnonen A. WoonMAN, citizens of the United States, both residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gears, of which the following is a specification. I
LhlS invention relates in general to draft gears and more particularly to that type of draft gears in which tandem springs are employed both of which are utilized in independently transferring the pulling and buffing forces from the draw-bar to the draft ZLIHIS.
It is an object of our invention to provide means employing a minimum number of relatively simple and inexpensive parts for transferring the forces applied to the drawbar directly to a plurality of springs arranged in tandem and thence to the draft arms at a plurality of points.
A further object of our invention is to provide a draft gearin which rigid connections between the butt of the draw-bar and the yoke are eliminated and whereby pulling and bufiing forces are transferred from the draw-bar to the draft arms simultaneously at a plurality of points.
Further objects and advantages of our invention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a draft gear according to our in vention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal sectio through the structure illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the yoke, and
Fig. 4: is a transverse vertical section through the yoke adjacent the intermediately disposed integral member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a drawbar provided with a butt 2 which is adapted to be embraced by the end of the U-shaped yoke 3 and held from movement in one direction longitudinally thereof by the lugs 1 at the forward end of the yoke 3. The butt 2 is prevented from lateral dis placement in one direction by a plate 5 integral with the arms of the yoke 3 at one Specification of Letters Patent.

side thereof adjacent the lugs 1. A remov able member 6, slidably engaging grooves 7 1n the arms of the yoke 3 and held in position by a bolt 8 disposed therethrough and through a lug 9 on one arm of the yoke 3, prevents lateral displacement of the butt 2 in the opposite direction. The butt 2 is thus loosely held in the end of the yoke 3.
A plate 10 is formed integrally with the arms of the yoke 3 intermediate the ends thereof extending across the yoke and connecting the arms. The plate 10 is provided with extensions 11 beyond the sides of the arms. Follower plates 12, 18 and 1 1 are loosely mounted between the arms of the yoke 3 and springs 15 and 16 are disposed, respectively, between the follower plates 12 and 13 and between the follower plate 1 1 and the intermediately disposed integral plate 10. An opening 17 is provided in the plate 10 and a plunger 18 is disposed in this opening and engages the follower plates 13 and 14 on either side of the plate 10.
Disposed on either side of the yoke 3 and secured in any suitable manner to the body of the yoke are the oppositely disposed draft arms 19 provided with lugs 20 forming shoulders against which the intermediately disposed integral plate 10 and the follower plates 12, 13 and lt normally rest. The lugs 20 prevent rearward movement .of the follower plate 12 and of the yoke 3 through engagement of the integral plate 10 therewith under buffing stresses. The lugs 20 also prevent forward movement of the follower plates 13 and 1 1 under pulling stresses.
The operation of our invention will. be
apparent from the following brief descrip tion thereof. When pulling forces are exerted 0n the draw-bar 1 the yoke 3 will be drawn forwardly carrying the integral plate 10 and the follower plate 12 to compress the springs 16 and 15, respectively, against the follower plates 1a and 13 which are held from forward movement by the lugs 20 on the draft arms 19. Upon the application of bufling forces to the draw-bar 1 the butt 2 thereof will move rearwardly in the yoke carrying with it the follower plates let and 13, the latter being actuated through the plunger 18. The springs 16 and 15 will be compressed against the integral plate 10 and the follower plate 12 which are held from rearward movement by the lugs 20 on the draft arms 19. In either case the forces are transferred from the draw-bar through the springs integrally to the draft arms at a plurality of points.
It will be readily appreciated that we have perfected a draft gear of relatively simple and inexpensive construction, which is adapted to perform the necessary functions in a simple and desirable manner and that various changes may bermadein the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore disclosed being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
We claim:
1. A yoke for draft gears comprising a U-shaped body member, means for connecting a draw-bar to one end of said yoke, and a plate integral vwith, extending transversely of, and connecting the arms of said body ,member intermediate the ends thereof and projectingbeyond both sides of said arms, the projecting portions of. said plate forming abrupt shoulders for engagement with the draft arms.
2. In a device of the characterdescribed, the combination of a yoke comprising a U- shaped body member, means for connecting a draw-bar to one end of said yoke to per- 'mit relative movement of the draw-bar in one direction, a plate integral with and connecting the arms of said body member intermediate the ends thereof and projecting beyond both sides of said arms, follower plates loosely disposed between the arms of said body member, springs disposed between one pair of said follower plates and between the remaining follower plate and the intermediately disposed integral plate, an opening in saidintermediately disposed integral plate, and means disposed in said opening and engaging a follower plate on either side thereof.
3. In a device of the character described,
the combination of oppositely disposed draft arms, each provided with a plurality of lugs, a yoke comprising a U-shaped body member, means for connecting a draw-bar to one end of said yoke to permit relative move ment of the draw-bar in one direction, a plate integral with and connecting the arms of said body member intermediate the ends thereof and projecting beyond both sides of said arms to engage one pair of said lugs, follower plates loosely disposed between the arms of said body member and each engaging a pair of said lugs, springs disposed between one pair of said follower plates and between the remaining follower plate and the intermediatelydisposed integral plat-e, an opening in the intermediately disposed integral plate, and means disposed in said opening and engaging a follower plate on either side thereof. V r
at. In a device of the character described, the combination of oppositely disposed draft arms, each provided with a plurality of lugs, a yoke comprisinga U-shaped body member, means for connecting a draw-barto one end of said yoke, a member integral with and connecting the arms of saidbodymember intermediate the ends thereof and projecting beyond the sides of said arms to engage one pair of said lugs, follower plates loosely disposed between the armsof said body member and each engaging a pair of saidlngs, springs disposed between one pair of said follower plates and between the remaining follower plate and the intermediately disposed integral member, an opening in said intermediately disposed integral member, and a plunger disposed in said opening and "engaging a follower plate on either side thereof.
