J'OHN SIMMONS CRAWFORD AND BYRON MOSES, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA.
CHEMICAL FIRE-EXTTNGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 191 '7.
Application filed July 20, 1914, Serial No. 851,854. Renewed January 25, 1917. Serial No. 144,529.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN SIMMONS CRAWFORD and BYRON Moses, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents of the city of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chemical Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to chemical fire extinguishers and the objects of the invention are to provide a suitable expansion chamber in the said extinguisher to so hermetically seal thechemicals utilized in this machine that they will remain effective until brought into use, and losenone of their strengthand power through any length of time, to provide a suitable cage to carry the vessels charged with the chemical agents, to render the several parts more easily gotten at for the purpose of repairing or renewal and other objects which will be made clear hereafter and it consists essentially of the improved construction of fire extinguisher particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved fire extinguisher.
Fig.' 2 is .a sectional elevation of the same. v
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the glass vessels designed to contain bi-oarbonate of soda.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the glass vessels designed to contain sulfuric acid.
Like letters of reference refer to like partsin the several drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved fire extinguisher comprising the body part 9 and the dome shaped cover 16 the former of which is substantially cylindrical in form having a bottom 10 located above the lower edge thereof and being also provided intermediate of its ends with a transversely extending member 11, adapted to subdivide same into a lower liquid containing chamber 12, and an upper chamber 18. j
The member 11 is provided on its upper face with an upwardly extending flange 14, formed like the frustum of an inverted hollow cone, and is provided on its lower face with a downwardly disposed basket 15 the object of which will be made clear hereafter. c I
The lower end of the bodypart 9 is pro vided with a transversely extending rodlO located below the bottom 10 the upper end being provided on its inner periphery with a thread designed to engage with the thread ed dome shaped cover 16, which is provided with a concentrically located and upwardly disposed boss 17 having an orifice through the vertical axis thereof with which the spindle 28 is adapted to slidably engage, such spindle being provided on its lower end with a suitable head 30, the upper end hav ing'a'push knob formed integral therewith.
It is desirable thata tight joint should be made between the spindle 28 and the boss 17 and to this end a stuffing box is located in the under face of the said boss with which the packing gland #10 makes threaded engagement. 1 Y
A guard ring 18, extends around the boss 17 and is suitably secured to the domeshaped cover 16, by means ofthe arms 19, the said cover being also provided with a discharge pipe 20 which is substantially elbow shaped. r
The outer end of the pipe 20 is adapted to be secured to the flexible hose 21, provided on its outer end with a nozzle 22, the inner end of the pipe 20 being protected by a suitable perforated'plate 23 located in the inside of the dome shaped cover 16 and adapted to prevent broken glassfrom lodging in the elbow pipe 20 or the flexible hose 21.
The fire extinguisher A is adapted to be supported by the operator by means of a handle 24; attached to the dome-shaped cover 16 or by the diametrically opposite. handle 25 attached to the cylindrical body 9.
The glass vessel or container 27 is designed to be filled with bi-carbonate of soda and to be hermetically sealed, While the glass vessel or container 28 is designed to be filled with sulfuric acid when it likewise is I flange by filling the space between the vessels 27 and i8 and the flange 14: with plaster of Paris or the like. i
The operation of the device is as follows: The lower chamber 12 is filled with water, the glass vessel 27 containing the bicarbonate of soda being located in the basket 15, and the glass vessel 28 containing the sulfuric acid located in the upwardly extending flange 14:.
The dome-shaped cover 16 is now secured in position making threaded engagement with the body part 9 when the machine is charged in a condition to be used. When the contents of the fire extinguisher are about to be discharged upon a fire it is only necessary to push. the spindle 28 downwardly whereupon the head 30, comes in contact with the glass vessel 28 breaking the same and simultaneously breaking the glass vessels 2?, the contents of which become intermixed with the water in the lower chamber 12.
The extinguisher is now inverted the rod 10 being gripped by the operator when the contents of the extinguisher are discharged through the elbow pipe 20 and the flexible hose 21.
From this description it will be seen that we have invented a machine which can be easily shipped while charged without the liability of the glass vessels contained therein becoming displaced or being broken, overcoming an objectionable feature with extinguishers at present in use.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of our invention, within the scope of the claims constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
lVhat we claim as our invention is:
1. A chemical fire extinguisher consisting of a body part, a cover through which a spindle extends, a transversely extending member subdividing the body' into a lower chamber and an upper chamber, an upwardly extending flange mounted on the upper face of the said transversely extend ing member, a basket extending downwardly from the lower face of the said transversely extending member, hermetically sealed chemical containers designed to be located in the said basket and in the said flange, and means for sealing the upper chamber from the lower chamber as and for the purpose specified.
2. A chemical fire extinguisher comprising a body portion, a cover through which a spindle passes, a transversely extending member subdividing the body portion into a lower liquid chamber and an upper chamber, an upwardly extending flange mounted on the said transversely extending member, a downwardly disposed basket mounted on the said transversely extending member, hermetically sealed chemical containers placed in the said basket and the said flange, means for sealing the upper chamber from the lower liquid containing chamber, a discharge pipe mounted on the said cover and a perforated plate designed to protect the inner end of the said discharge pipe, as and for the purpose specified.
