Description

- L SCHU'MAN. HANDLE ATTACHMENT FOR SUIT BOXES.
APPLICATION FILED NOV- 6. 1915- Patented Sept. 4, 1917 JULIUS SCI-IUMAN, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I. JULIUS SCHUMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San in the county of San-Francisco,
Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Handle Attachment for Suit- Boxes, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a handle for suit boxes and its object is to provide means whereby the weight of the package may be spread out over enough of the suit box material area to prevent it from tearing or breaking with the load carried.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment which will have means connected therewith for suspending the clothing from the upper edge of the suit box, thereby preventing it from wrinkling til as it does when simply placed in the box without a support.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be many modifications thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the suit box with the handle applied thereto and the straps or tapes surrounding the box and connected to the handle attachment,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the upper portion of the box with the handle removed therefrom and showing the tapes just before they have been placed in position over the handle attachment,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view throu h the box adjacent one of the handle attac ment supports,
Fig. .4: is a longitudinal sectional view through the center of the handle attachment, with the cover removed,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a hook used for connecting the tapes with the handle attachment, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of handle attachment pressed out of a single piece of metal.
The numeral 1 indicates one half of a suit box over which the other half 2 telescopes. One of the edges of the inner box 1 is pro vided with two holes to receive eyebolts 3 and 4, said eyebolts passing through holes Specification of Letters Patent.

in a plate 5 and having nuts 6 and '7 to secure them thereto. Each bolt has a washer as shown at 8 and 9 to increase the contact of the bolt with the box edge, and each bolt also has a tape as indicated at 10 and 11. Each tape has an elastic end as indicated at 12 and 13, each of which elastic ends has openings therethrough to enable the tape to be passed over the eyebolt after the outer box has been placed in position over the inner box.
When the two boxes have been assembled and the two eyebolts have been passed over the edge of the outer box 2 the tapes are passed around the box and their ends are placed over the eyebolts as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, after which the handle 14 may have its hooked ends 15 and 16 inserted through the eyebolts and the package is ready to be carried. In order to support the garment within the box another eyebolt 17 is riveted to the plate 5 and projects therefrom. If desired the hook 18 shown in Fig. 5. may be used on the ends of the tapes.
In Fig. 6 there is shown a slightly modified form of the securing plate 19. This plate 19 has three cars 20, 21 and 22 punched therefrom, each of said ears having an open-' ing formed therein. The two ears 20, 21 are raised upwardly and extend a short distance parallel to the plate and then at right angles thereto,.so that when they are forced over the openings cut in the suit box on which they are used, the suit box material is forced under the lips thereby securely holding the plate in place. The handle is sprung into the lips 20, 21 and a suit hanger may be placed in the opening in the lip 22. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as fol-- lows, express reservation being made of permissible modifications:
1. In combination, the upper side of the inner member of a two-member suit box having two holes therethrough, a plate attached on the interior of said upper side of said inner member having two holes registering with said two holes in said inner member, two eyebolts one fastened in each of said registering holes in said plate and inner member the eye ends of which are outside, the upper side of the outer member of said twoqnember suit box having two slots through which the eye ends of said eyebolts enter when said suit-boxmembers are in operative relation, and a handle having hooks removably engaged with said eyebolts. 4
- 2'. In combination, the upper side of the. inner member of a two-member suit box,- havin two holes therethrough, a plate attache on the interior of said upper side of said inner member having two holes registering with said two holes in said inner member, two eyebolts one fastened in each of in operative relation, two tapes the inner end of each of which is enga ed with one of said eye bolts on top of sai inner memher and the outer end of each of which has a slot engageable with one of said eyebolts on top of said outer member when said members are'in operatlve relation, and a handle having hooks removably engaged with said eyebolts.
3; In combination, the upper side of the inner member of a two-member suit box having two holes therethrough, a plate attached -on the interior of said upper side of sald inner member having two holes registering with said holes in said inner member, an eyebolt attached to said plate with its eye end extending inward, two eyebolts one fastened in each of said registering holesin said plate and inner mem er the eye ends of which are outside, the upper side of the outer member of said two-member suit box having two slots through which the eye ends of said eyebolts enter when said suit-box members are in operative relation, and a handle having hooks removably engaged with said eyebolts. i g
4. A suit box attachment comprising a plate having eye members projecting above and below the same, two of said members being used for connecting the plate to the said box, tapes connected to two of the eye members, said tapes having resilient ends adapted to be passed around the suit box and connected to the eye members, and a handle for surrounding the suit box.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this th day of October A. D.
