To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, VVELLINGTON B.
Lnn and Monnrs A. Boomer, both of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Stopping and Derailing Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to derailin devices and has for its object to provide a c evice of this character which is simple in construction and positive in its operation.
Further, the invention has for its object to provide a derailing device comprising a derailing block and means for locking the same in either its operative or inoperative positions.
Further, the invention has for its object to provide a derailing device comprising a derailing device, means for supporting the same upon one of the rails of a track, and means for locking the block in either its operative or inoperative positions.
Othenobjects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a derailing device embodying the invention Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the lne B-B of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the derailing block in its inoperative position.
Referring to the drawings the derailing device, which is shown applied to a rail 1 of a railroad track, comprises supporting means consisting of two members 3 each having a shank portion adapted to pass through a hole in the web of a rail, and a headed portion provided with a hole to receive a pin 6. Positioned in the fishing space of the rail 1 are suitable spaclng inembers 14 through which the shank portions of the members 3 ass.
The derailing block 7 has downwardly extending ribs 9 provided with apertures through which the pin 6 passes whereby the block 7 may be rotated about the pin 6 into e ther its operative or its inoperative positlon. In o'rderto lock the derailing block in its operative position a locking member 20 is passed through a hole formed in one of the ribs 9. The locking member 20 is provided at one end with a flat head adapted to engage the upper side of the headed endof one of the supporting members 3, and its other end is provided with an eye adapted to receive a padlock 19 as clearly shown in F 8. lVhen the locking member 20 is in position accidental rotation of the derailing block is prevented nor can the block be removed from the rail by an unauthorized person as the padlock prevents the removal of the locking member.
The derailing block may be locked in its inoperative position in a similar manner, as shown in Fig. 10, the flat head of the locking member 20, in such instance, engaging the under side of the headed end of the supporting member 3.
Having thus described our said invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 2- 1. A derailing device comprising supporting means adapted to be secured to a rail, a derailing block rotatably mounted upon said supporting means, whereby it may be moved into operative or inoperative position with respect to the rail, and means co-acting with said derailing block and with said supporting means for locking said derailing block against movement when in either one of its said positions, substantially as specified.
2. A derailing device comprising supporting means adapted to be secured to a rail, a derailing block rotatably mounted upon said supporting means, whereby it may be moved into operative or inoperative position with respect to the rail, and means adapted to engage said derailing block and said supporting means for locking said derailing block against movement when in either one of its said positions, substantially as specified.
3. A derailing device comprising supporting means adapted to be secured to a rail, a derailing block rotatably mounted upon said supporting means, whereby it may be moved into operative or inoperative position with respect to the rail, and a member adapted to engage said derailing block and provided with a head adapted to engage said supporting means for locking said derailing block against movement when in either one of its said positions, substantially as specified.

A derailing device comprising supporting means adapted to be secured to a rail, a derailing block rotatably mounted upon said supporting means, whereby it may be moved into operative or inoperative position with respect tothe rail, aremovable locking member adapted to engage said derailing block and said supporting member for looking said derailing block against movement when in either of its said positions, and means for securing said locking member. against removal, substantially as specified. 5; A derailing device comprising supporting means adapted to be secured to a rail and provided with upper and lower surfaces, a derailing block rotatably mounted upon said supportmg means, whereby it may be moved into operative 'or inoperative position with respect to the rall, said derailing block being provided with a perforation adapted to lie above the upper surface of said supporting means when said block is in its operative position and to lie below the lower surface of said supporting means when said block is in its inoperative position, and a locking member adapted to be mounted within said perforation and having a portion adapted to engage the upper or lower surface of said supporting means Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the dommis sioner of Patents.
