UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE.
ZEBINA FOBES, OF TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HENRY PATOHIN, OF BENNINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LETTER-BOXES, ALARMS, AND DOOR-PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,880, dated February 20, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ZEBINA E. FoBEs, of
Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of I of a transverse central section. Fig. 2 is aback view of the working parts.
This invention has relation to alarms for letter-boxes; and the novelty consists in the peculiar combination herein described and claimed, with such alarm, of a door-plate covering the opening of the letter-box, hinged to the door, and so connected with the alarm as to cause it to sound when the door-plate is raised. My invention also consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the operative device through which the alarm is sounded upon the raising of the door-plate.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents a door provided with a letter-box, B. 0 represents the slot in the door through which letters are deposited in the box. D designates a door-plate, hinged to the door so as to cover the opening or slot Q. E is a bracket, secured to the inside of the door and supporting a pulley-roller, F. G represents a chain running from the doorplate upon the pulley- .roller F, and connected to a lever, H, pivoted to a plate, H, attached to the door. I represents a coiled spring connecting the lever H to a projection, 03, from the plate H. J designates a bell secured to a post, K. K is a bellhammer, pivoted to the plate H on a'line with the lever H, and connected to a projection, i, by means of a coiled spring, I. The ends of the lever H, nearer the pivoted end of the bell-hammer, is slotted, and contains a block, L, having one of its angles pressed out toward a shoulder, L, on the side of the bell-hammer, by means of a spring, m. 7
When the door-plate is lifted, the chain G draws down one end of the lever H, and raises the other containing the block L. Through this block the bell-hammer is raised, but falls as soon as the block passes the shoulder L, sounding the alarm on the bell. The spring 1 serves to give the hammer greater force than if allowed to fall by the force of gravity alone. The spring Iis for the purpose of drawing the lever back to its place after it has been raised. M denotes stops, which limit the movement of the lever. N is a stop upon which the bellhammer rests. hen the door-plate falls, the lever H regains its original position, the spring m allowing the block to give sufficiently to let it pass the shoulder L.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the door-plate D, letterter-box B, bell J, hammer K, springs m and I, chain G, trigger H, block L, pulley F, and let ter-way O, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ZEBINA E. FOBES.
