Therein the outer or energizing circuit terminals are indicated by A, B, and the drill motor is shown diagrammatically at M,which it is Adesired to operate by means of our improved apparatus and circuit. A manual push-button switch S is provided for actuating or controlling the apparatus through a suitable cable indicated by the conducting-wires upon the left of the diagram. These conductors or insulated cable wires 1, 2,' 3,'4 and 5 are shown on the dia gram by upon their respective termi# nals for greater convenience in tracing the circuitifwhile'oertain arts of the switch mechanism already exp ained, are indicated diagrammatically and by their appropriate character of reference. v
Iii order to start, the drill motor, the operative has simpl .to depress the pushbutton p of switch thereby engaging the lower contact "thereof to close circuit through the switch S while itis desired to operate the' m'tor.. Circuit may be traced from terminalA, through conductor 3, contact p' of -svifitchS h the solenoid a of the actuating magnet an contact k' `of the secondary switch to the terminal B of the energizing'circut.
This excites solenoid a, which immediately elevates its core, 'together with disk d and its contacts, so that the latter are engaged with the opposing stationary contact's, between whic circuit is established and broken. Simultaneously the secondary switch is actuated to cut out of circuit the solenoid a at k', and close contact between k and k", which permits the subsequent energization of the solenoid b connected in conductor 2.
In the diagram the disk d is indicated by dotted lines which inclose the contacts d d" and e' and e' electrically connected as shown. These contacts will be actuated into engagement with the stationary contact f' f", and g and g,thereby establishing circuit from the terminals A, B, directly through the primary switch contacts which are now closed, and associated conductors 4, 5, to the drill motor M. This is the running position for the motor and thel foregoing conditions obtain while said motor is being driven.
Whenever push-button p is released, its upper contact will be normally engaged by means of a spring, and current will be automatcally cut ofi' from the drill motor. On the other hand, should the current be inter rupted from any cause, and said button is afterward released by the operative, the drill motor will be automatically disconnected, immediately the current Hows; this being effected by the releasesolenoid b. Circuit may be traced under either of the conditions assumed, from terminal A, through the conductor 3 in 'shunt with motor M, through contact p, conductor 2, solenoid b and contact k" of the secondary switch, to terminal B. This, as initially explained, will effect the separation of the primary switch contacts supplying current to the motor, and change the secondary switch, to connect the actuating magnet again in circuit. y A
From the foregoing, it will now be understood that the switch mechanism may'with advantage, be positioned at adistancefrom the drillj motor, which, however,I is maintained under the immediate control'of the operative, by means of his push button switch. This switch, it will also be observed, serves for the initial closure of theV circuit, which is thereafter closed tofthejmotor in shunt relation, between the primary switch contacts. The latter contacts, however, are those between which the energizing circuit is broken, and for these contacts we preferably provide renewable carbon contact-parts. These features are of importance jin controlling the currents of high -voltage, which' almost necessarily are employed.
Again, by providin the 'automatic release-magnet, connecte in circuit as above set forth,v .our improved switch mechanism renders it absolutely impossible for" the current to fail and thereafter reach the motor, because the motor circuit must be o. cned immediately throu h the agency oft e re'- lease-magnet. Sai motor, therefore','xnust invariably be started b the operative who has control of the pushutton switch.
Having now described the preferred embodiment of our invention, to ether with the use to which we have applic it, 'and the advantages developed in such practice of our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, together with such modifications as may be made by mere skillthe following 1. In an electromagnetic switchthe combination with a reciprocated insulating member, of contacts mounted thereon, coacting contacts adapted to be engaged by the latter, a solenoid and its core connected for reciprocating said insulatin member, a spring-actuated latch adapte normally to lock said contacts and mountinvr in their position of engagement, a second solenoid adapted when energized to release said latch, an automatic switch controlled by the first mentioned solenoid adapted alternatively to connect. one or the other of said solenoids in the controlling circuit, and a member positioned intermediately of the reciprocated part and said automatic switch adapted to effect the concurrent actuation and locking of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. ln an automatic electro-magnetic switch, the combination with stationary and movable contacts Governing the controlled s circuit, oi a solenoid and its core connected for the actuation of said movable contacts, a second solenoid and its core, positioned adjacent to and substantially parallel with the first solenoid, a spring-actuated latch pivoted to move at rlght angles to the axes of said solenoids and positioned for actuation by the core of the second solenoid; said latch being adapted automatically to lock the contacts in their position of engagement, an automa tic switch controlled by the first mentioned solenoid, adapted simultaneously to connect the second solenoid in the controlling circuit upon the closure of the aforesaid contacts, and means also controlled by the latch for temporarily locking said switch in circuit with, the second solenoid, substantially as set forth.
3. In an electrically actuated switch of the class described, the combination with two solenoids positioned side by side, of a snitchingmember connected for actuation Copies o! this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the by the core of one. of said solenoids, a latch associated with said electro-magnets and pivoted to move in a plane at right angles to their axes in position to lock the switching-member in its closed relation, and a releasing-part presenting an inclined face actuated by the core of the second solenoid to release the latch, substantially as set forth.
4. In electro-magnetic switching apparatus, the combination with switch contacts adapted to control a local circuit2 of a circuit-closing electro-magnet operatively associated with said contacts, a circuit-opening electro-ma gnet, means controlled by said second electro-magnet for normally maintaining said contacts in their closed relation, an automatic circuit-changer operatively associated with said electro-magnets, and a manually operated circuit-closing member biased to close the circuit to the switch-opening electro-magnet and controlling the circuit to the first electro-magnet, su stantially as set forth.
