VALVE MECHANISM.
To all whom itmey concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD T. I-IoLBRooK,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Ohio and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valve Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valve mechanism and has particular application to mechanically operated valve mechanism for use in connection with ammonia pumps.
Ammonia pumps, as a rule, are equipped with pressure controlled inlet and exhaust valves which operate after the fashion of check valves so that when the piston moves downwardly to draw in the charge of gas, the inlet valve will open and the exhaust valve close, while in the reverse movement of the piston to deliver the charge, the inlet valve will close and the exhaust valve open. These pressure controlled valves often become gas bound, thereby rendering the pump inefficient and defective in operation, and necessitating the shutting down of the pump to remedy the defects in the valve. In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a mechanically operated valve mechanism for ammonia pumps wherein the inlet and exhaust valves will be positively operated, thereby eliminating the possibility of the valves becoming gas bound, and wherein the valve chambers will be so constructed as to be capable of ready attachment to and removal from the pump cylinder.
It is also my purpose to provide valve mechanism of the class described wherein the ends of the valve chambers will be closed 40 by removable plates so that access may be had to such chambers to facilitate the assembling and dismantling of the valve mechanism.
With the above and other objects in view, 45 the invention consists in 'the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through an ammonia pump equipped with valve mechanism constructed in accordance with the present invention, the driving engine of the pump being shown in end eleva- 55 tion.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a horizontal main shaft journaled in suitable bearings 2 and having one end equipped with a fly wheel 3. This shaft 1 is provided with cranks 4: and 5, suit-ably spaced apart. 6 designates a steam engine, which in the present instance is of the horizontal type, and the outer end of the connecting rod of the engineG is connected with the crank 1 so that in the operation of the steam engine the crank shaft will be revolved. Arranged adjacent to the crank 5 and spaced apart longitudinally of the shaft 1 are uprights 7 disposed at opposite sides of the crank 5, and secured to the upper ends of the uprights 7 is a vertical pump cylinder 8, in which is mounted for rectilinear movement a piston 9 connected to the upper end of a vertical piston rod 10 that projects through the lower end of the cylinder 8 and has the lower end connected to the crank 5, so that in the rotation of the shaft 1 under the action of the steam engine (3 motion will be imparted to the piston 9 to reciprocate the latter within the cylinder 8. Formed in the cylinder 8 adjacent to the upper end thereof are diametrically opposed inlet and exhaust openings 11 and 12, respectively. Arranged at opposite sides of the cylinder 8 and in communication with the inlet and exhaust ports 11 and 12, are valve chambers each embodying a casting 13 partially circular in horizontal section and having the ver tical edges thereof formed with outwardly extending flanges 14: that abut the outer wall of the cylinder 8. These flanges are formed with bolt holes that aline with similar holes in the cylinder, and passed through these alining holes are stud bolts 15 whereby the castings 13 may be securely fastened to the cylinder. Each casting 13 is provided with a transverse partition 16 formed with a valve seat 17, and cooperating with the valve seat 17 is a valve disk 18 equipped with a depending stem 19 having the lower end formed with a foot 20. Surrounding the stem 19 between the partition and the foot 20 is an expansion spring 21 that acts to hold the valve disk 18 normally in engagement with the seat 17. Closing the upper and lower ends of the valve chambers are removable plates 22 that are formed with bolt holes alining with similar holes in the respective end edges of the casting- 25 are yokes 27 in which are rotatably mounted rollers 28 that ride upon cams 29 and 30, respectively, fastened to the shaft 1 at opposite sides of the crank 5.
Leading into the casting, communicating with the inlet port 11, below the valve in such casting, is a supply pipe 31, while leading from the remaining casting below the valve therein is a delivery pipe 32.
In practice, the piston 9 is reciprocated within the cylinder 8 underthe action of the main shaft 1, and the steam engine 6, and in the downward movement of the, piston 9 the cam 29 operates the valve in the inlet valve chamber to open position so that a charge of gas may be drawn past such valve into the cylinder 8, while the cam 30 releases the exhaust valve so that the spring 21 of such valve may close the latter and hold the same closed. On the other hand, when the piston 9 moves upwardly within the cylinder 8, the inlet valve is closed and the exhaust valve open so that the charge may be delivered to the pipe 82.
It will be seen that I have provided a valve machanism which will be found especially useful in connection with ammonia pumps and wherebythe possibility of the valves becoming gas bound is obviated,thus enabling the pump to operate at all times and the plant to deliver its full quota of work. Furthermore, it will be seen that I have provided valve mechanism wherein the valve chambers may be quickly and conveniently attached to the pump cylinder and removed therefrom, and wherein access may be readily had to the valve disks and seats.
lVhile I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limitor confine myself to the precise details of construction herein de scribed and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim and without departing' -from the spirit of the invention.
