Description
JOHN A. LINN, 0F SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 19 1?.
Application filed June 26, 1915. Serial No. 36,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. LINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and the State of Iowa, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combination square, rule, parallel gage, angle gage, divider, inside and outside caliper and center finder.
The object of the invention is to combine all of these devices into one simple compact device, foldable into a small compass, and readily carried about the person.
With this object in view the invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan view, the device being partially opened out.
Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a section on the line 44- of Fig. 1.
In constructing my device I employ parallel rules 1 and 2, these being doubled by providing them with spaced parallel members 1 and 2: These rules are connected by lazy tong bars 3 having perforations 4: for marking points. The members 1 and 1 are also connected together at one corner by a block 1 The tong members 3 have fixed pivotal points at one end, and the members 1 and 2 are longitudinally slotted as at 5 to receive suitable fastening means 6 carried by the other ends of the tong members, said means preferably consisting of a pin, washer and beveled nut. One of these slots, preferably the slot 5 of the rule member 1 is pro vided with graduations 7 which designate the degree of the angle made by the tong members with the rules 1 and 2. Pivoted to one end of the rule 1 and between said rule and its companion member l is a straight edge member 8 longitudinally grooved as shown at 9. A spring drawn pin 10 works through an end portion of the member 2 and is adapted to enter the groove 9, the spring 11 being secured at one end under Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the head of the pin and at the other end to the rule 2.
When the parts are not in use or are in folded position the tong members enter the pocket or space between the members 1 and 1 and the straight edge 8 folds back into the same pocket, resting against the folded tongs. The members 2 and 2 fold or rest against the inner edge of the members 1 and 1.
The straight edge can be swung at any angle with respect to the rule 1, and when at a right angle thereto can enter the space between the rule 2 and its companion memher 2*, being locked by the pin 10.
A lug or rib 12 is formed on the underside of the member 1 and is adapted to bear on the edge of a board or other surface on which the device is placed.
What I claim is 1. A device of the kind described comprising, parallel rules, each rule being formed of two members spaced apart, of lazy tongs adapted to be folded between the members of one rule, and pivotally connected to said rules at their ends, one connection of each tong being movable along the rule, and a stralght edge pivoted between the members of one rule adjacent its end and adapted to rest between them in folded position, and when at right angles thereto tolpass between the members of the other ru e.
2. A device of the kind described comprising parallel rules longitudinally slotted, one of said rules having a central longitudinal rib, lazy tongs foldable on one of said rules, each tong having a fixed pivotal con nection with one of said rules, and a movable connection with the other rule, the said movable connections being slidable along the slots, a straight edge foldable on one of the rules, and having a longitudinal groove, and a pin carried by the other rule and adapted to engage said groove, said straight edge forming one member of a square when engaged by said pin.
