After the shaft and the wheel arestarted,
pressure on the lever 28 isreleased and in making a revolution, the stud roller 60 on the shaft hubt engages the safety lever 14,
swings it over to the position shown in Fig.
6, and thereby brings the cam segment 16 in the path of the pivoted pawl 17 on the now turning wheel, and as" the said pawls 17 engage the cam 16, they are rocked to the position shown in Fig; 3 which pushes the pinfinwardly and forces the clutch bar 8 from engagement with the wheel and thereby allows the wheel 7 to now run freely, as the rotation of the shaft is again retarded by the lock bar 8 again contacting withthe shouldered end of the pawl 14' which latter, by reason of the release of lever 39 is forced back to its uppermost position in the path of the clutch or lock lever '8, see Fig. 8.
By reason of the safety lever 14: being attached to the release bar 19in the manner stated, it; follows that as the lever 14 is swung over to the position shown in Fig. 6, the release bar is likewise pulled in the same direction andas it thus moves, its beveled edge 1 1 engages the trip clutchmember 9 1 and forces it up and holds it to the position shown in Fig. 3, the advantage of the latter operation being apparent for the reason that if an operator is careless and holds the lever 39 and the trip clutch member 9 down too long, the actioirof the press puts the trip member back to its proper place, which makes the press safe for a careless operator.
While the specific cooperative arrange ment of the parts shown and described present a practical application of my invention,
it is understood I do not limit myself to the details shown, since they may be readily varied or modified without departing from my invention as set out in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. Safety means for punch presses and the like, comprising in combination with the operating shaft and a power wheel loosely mounted thereon; mechanism normally tending to lock the shaft to turn with the power wheel, a detent for holding the said mechanism out of locked engagement with the wheel, manually actuated means for tripping the said detent whereby to permit the said mechanism to clutch the shaft to the wheel and further means actuated by the rotation of the wheel for shifting the said locking mechanism out of operative engagement with the wheel.
2. A rotary shaft, a power wheel loosely mounted thereon, clutch mechanism cooperating with the shaft and the wheel and normally out of interlocked engagement with the power wheel, the said mechanism including a locking element and means tending to normally move thesaid element into a locked engagement with the power wheel, a manually released detent that holds the locking element to its wheel released position and adapted when tripped to effect the interlocking of the wheel and the shaft, whereby to rotate the shaft, and other means operated by the rotation of the shaft and the wheel for shifting the clutch mechanism to thereby release the shaft and the wheel from interlocked engagement.
3. In a mechanism ofthe character stated, a rotary shaft, a power wheel loosely'mounted thereon, clutch mechanism thatholds the wvlieel locked with the shaft, whereby to cause the wheel to rotate with the shaft to a predetermined degree and means operated by the rotat1on of the said wheel for shift ingthe clutch devices from engagement with crating shaft and the power wheel loosely mounted thereon; of an automatic operating clutch mechanism for holding the wheel fixed on the shaft, means operated by the rotating wheel for shifting the clutch mech anism to release the wheel from locked en- ..gagement with the shaft, clutch tripping devices, manually operated means for setting the tripping devices and other means on the wheel for engaging the said tripping devices, whereby to shift the setting devices to restore the clutched relation of the. wheel and the shaft. .5. In a mechanism of the character stated, a rotary shaft, a power wheel, means for holding the said shaft and wheel interlocked for a predetermined period and that automatically releases the wheel from an interlocked connection with the shaft at the end of such predetermined period and hand controlled means for restoring the said connections in condition for again effecting the interlocked relation of the shaft and the wheel.
6. In a mechanism of the character stated, a rotary shaft, a power wheel, means for holding the said shaft and wheel interlocked for a predetermined period and that automatically releases the wheel from an interlocked connection with the shaft at the end of such predetermined period and hand controlled means for restoring the said connections in position for again effecting the interlocked relation of the shaft and the wheel, said interlocking means including a clutch member on the shaft normally held for interlocking with the wheel, a shifter bar that engages the said member and means on the wheel that engages the said bar and shifts for moving the clutch member out of interlocked engagement with the: wheel,

9. Ina mechanism of the character-stated,
