To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. ANDER- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in. El. Paso county, in.
the State of Colorado, have invented. certain new and. useful Improvements in Machines for Reboring Engine-Cylinders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to. improvements in machines for reboring engine cylinders. My invention has for its object to produce such a. machine by combining an attachment which I have devised with: the ordinary engine lathe. It is well. known that in order to keep. an automobile engine or other gasolene engine in perfect workingconditionit is. nee essary to rebore the cylinders occasionally. This work has heretofore been. done by a boring machine which can. be used. for the purpose of boring only. Such machines are so expensive and capable of such limited use that they have not been installed in ordinary automobile repair shops and. garages. It is therefore inmost cases necessary for auto. mobile repair shops to send, engine cylinders to the manufacturer when. reboring is required.
By combining: my attachment with an, ordinary lathe a machine is produced which is capable of performing a function of the cylinder boring machine. The attachment by means of which I convert a lathe into a reboring machine-is so inexpensive to manufacture that it is within the reach of every repair shop and garage, and such. shops may by use of it eliminate the expense and. delay heretofore necessitated by sending cylinders to the manufacturer when reboring is required.
By using my machine, it is possible to rebore cylinders cast in block as well as those cast separately.
The embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

I will. first describe my attachment as illustrated in detail in Figs. 1, 2,. 3, 4, 7 The frame of the attachment consists of a bottom 1 having the strengtheningrih2; the wall 3 having the strengthening ribs 4; and 5 and the posts. 6. and 7 having strengthening ribs 8. and 9. The frame comprising these parts preferably consists of a. single piece of metal. To the bottom of the frame are bolted the pieces 10 having the grooves. 11 adapted to fit over the ways of a lathe. The bolt holes 12in the pieces 10. are extended laterally so that the grooves 11. are capable of sidewise adj ustment. This makes the attachment adaptable to lathes in which the ways are different distances apart.
The wall 3 is provided with a central opening 13. Threaded holes are provided in the tops of the pieces 6 and 7 through which pass screws. 14 whose ends engage small holes in the block 15. A bar 16 is attached to the wall 3 and extends rearwardly there from.
I will now describe my complete reboring machine, which consists of a lathe in combination with an attachment which I have described and certain other features:
Fig. 5 shows the lathe 17. Upon the head spindle 18 of'thelathe is attached the centering head 19, which consists of a piece of steel one end of which tapers gradually from the diameter slightly larger than that of the cylinder to be rebored to a diameter slightly smaller than that of the cylinder. Beyond the centering head is a shaft 20 attached to the head spindle 18, and supported at its outer end upon a center 21, attached to the tail stock 22 of the lathe. Upon the shaft 20 is the reboring tool or reamer 23.
As shown in Fig. 5 my attachment is placed with its grooves 11 upon the ways 24 of the lathe. The rear end of the bar 16 is attached to the tool holder 25, which is carried by the tool carriage 26 of the lathe.
The operation of my reboring machine is as fO1l0WS:- v
Before the shaft 20 and reamer 23 are;
placed in position, the casting containing the cylinder to be rebored is placed upon the bottom 1 of the attachment and is propped up so as to maintain the center of the cylinder slightly below the center of the head stock and tail stock of the lathe. The attaclnnent bearing the cylinder casting is then moved along the ways of the lathe toward the head stock by moving the tool carriage, until the centering head enters and centers the cylinder to be bored. While the centering head is in the cylinder the screws 1% are screwed in, gripping the cylinder between the wall 13 and the bars 15 and thus holding it in proper position to be bored. The attachment bearing the cylinder is then moved away from the head stock by moving the tool carriage, and the shaft 20 and reamer 23 are placed in the position shown in Fig. 5. The reamer is then rotated by rotating the head spindle of the lathe and the cylinder is fed against the reamer by moving the tool carriage forward. The cylinder is fed forward until the reamer is passed completely through it and is thus accurately rebored.
lVhat I claim is 1. A reboring machine comprising a lathe having ways, a head stock, a tail stock, and a tool carriage; an attachment for holding the casting to be rebored having grooves fitting upon said ways; a bar connecting said attachment with said tool carriage; and a reamer carried between said head stock and tail stock.
2. A reboring machine comprising a lathe having ways, a head stock and head spindle, a tail stock, and a tool carriage; a device for holding the casting to be rebored, having grooves fitting upon said ways; a bar connecting said attachment and said tool carriage; and a tapering centering head attached to said head spindle.
3. A reboring machine comprising a lathe having ways, a head stock and head spindle, a tail stock, and a tool carriage; an attachment adapted to hold the casting to be bored having ways, a head stock, a tail stock,
and a tool carriage; an attachment having a bottom with grooves fitting upon said ways and a wall perpendicular to said grooves, and an adjustable means for pressing the casting to be bored against said wall; and a bar rigidly connecting said wall with said tool carriage.
5. A lathe attachment comprising a bottom having grooves adapted to fit upon the ways of the lathe, a wall perpendicular to said grooves, and means for pressing a casting against said wall.
6. A lathe attachment for reboring cylinders, comprising a bottom having grooves adapted to fit upon the ways of the lathe, a wall perpendicular to said grooves near one end of said bottom, posts near the other end of said bottom, blocks adjacent to the inner sides of said posts, and means co-acting with said posts for forcing said blocks toward said wall.
7 An attachment for lathes, comprising an integral frame consisting of a bottom, a wall at one end of said bottom, and posts at the other end thereof, and grooved pieces adapted to fit upon the ways of the lathe adjustably attached to said bottom. 7 8. A lathe attachment for reboring cylinders, comprising a frame having a bottom with grooves adapted to fit upon the ways of the lathe, a wall perpendicular to said grooves, means for pressing the casting to be bored against said wall, and a bar attached to said frame and adapted to be fastened to the tool carriage of the lathe.
