Application filed January 16, 1517. Eterial No. 14.25%.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L FRANK W. Wour, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Parnassus, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Car-lines, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to forged steel carlines for freight cars, andparticularly to car-lines made from commercial shapes such. as l-bars, channels and Zbars. The objects of the invention are to produce a light, strong, inexpensive carline, which Will-take up little head room in the car and which does not require the side plates to be deeply notched where its ends are secured to them.
Fnrtherobjects and details of the invention appear in the following description of the several carlines shown in the accompanying drawings. What is claimed as the invention appears from the appended claims.
in the drawings, wherein the same reference characters are used to designate the some or similar parts in the several views,
Fi ure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a carline of Eli-section embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and
Figs. 3 and t are cross-sections of the can lines shown in Figs. 1 and 2, taken on the lines 33 and 4%, respectively, in Fig. 6, looking in the directions indicated.
Figs. 5 and 6 are a plan view and a side elevation, respectively, of the end portion of a modification of the invention comprising a separately formed end saddle or gusset plate which is riveted to the end of the carline; and
F ig. '7 is an end view of the same.
The ca'rline 27 shown in Figs. 1 to 4 comprises an I-beam arranged with its web 33 vertical, and bent downward on each side of the middle to conform to the pitch of the car roof. The top flange 28 has portions 29 of its edges bent up alongside of the seats for the ridge pole and purlins to position these members where they belong. lhe lower flange 30 is continuous from end to end and is bent down at the ends to form legs 31 for bolting to the inside faces of the side plates. The top flange extends beyond the lateral lugs 34 at the ends of the web I over the side plate and is bent down against the outer side of the side plate to fern; a lug 32 for securing the carllne to the side plate. The end portion of the web is split in lengthwise halfway between the top and bottom flanges about as far as the seat for the outside pnrlin. and the two split portions of the web are lapped for their full width at the ends of the carline, and are securely riveted together. This arrangement causes the top and bottom flanges to converge toward the ends of the carline, and diminishes the height of the carline at the caves. The split ends of the web 33 are severed close alongside of the flanges for a few inches in from each end, and the severed portions are bent sidewise on each side of the web to form lateral lugs 34 for bolting against the inside faces of the side plates.
The carline 39 shown in Figs. 5, 6 and i is an 'fI-section carline having its ends cut off square, the web being split horizontally, as in the 'carline 27. Separate end bracket members 40, each of which has a flanged stem portion 41, are arranged one on each side of the web of the carline, and are securely riveted to each end of the carline 39 by the same rivets which connect the ends of the split web. The brackets rest upon the side plates, and have suflicicnt width to provide a good bearing thereon to resist any tendency of the carline to tip or twist with respect to the si'de plates, whereby the carline braces the two side plates against movement caused by distortion of the car frame. Each bracket has an inner flange l1 bent down to engage against the inner face of the side plate,- and an outer flange d3 bent over the outer face of the side plate. fornr' mg a very rlg'id connection between the carline and'side plate when the parts are bolted together.
It is evident that further modifications oi? the invention can be made, and the invention is not restricted to either of the terms shown.
I claim as my invention:
1. A carline comprising" a main member having? top and bottom flanges, and a web disposed vertically, the ends of said web being split lengthwise and the split portions lapped and riveted together at their ends whereby said flanges converge toward the ends of the carline the ends oi said split portions having oppositely extending vertically coextensive lateral projections adapt ed to be secured to the side plates.
2. In combination with a car,
g v memo comprising a main member having top and line, and extensionfportions' seemed by said bottom flanges and a web disposed vertirivets to the lap 9 ends of said webs and 10 cally, said we terminating at the inner projecting over t eside-plates in line with sides of the side plates, the ends of said web said top flanges to support said carlines 5 being split lengthwise and the split porfrom the side plates.
tions lapped'and riveted together at their Signed at New Kensington, Pa, this 8th ends by horizontal rivets whereby said day of January, 1917. flanges converge toward the ends of the car- FRANK W. WOLFF.
