Description

W. L. GUIDES GAGE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-24. 1917- Patented Aug, 28, 1917.
392511111. (ieddas;
WILLIAM L. GEDDES, OF MERION, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAGE.
Appfication filed January 24, 1917.
T 0 all whom it may cancer 17,:
Be it known that I, lViLLIaM L. Gnnnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merion, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in gages of the type commonly used for showing the water level in steam boilers and its primary object is to secure correct indication under varying conditions.
In gages for indicating the water level in steam boilers, particularly, the passages which should be open are sometimes stopped, by the sticking of check valves or other obstruction, whereby the glass fails to show the correct level of the water.
In accordance with my invention, in its preferred form, a plurality of passages are provided between each end of the glass and the steam and water drum of the boiler, a valved by-pass being provided for obtaining controlled fiow around the usual valved ports.
The characteristic features of my invention are embodied in the gage illustrated in the accompanying drawing, of which the following is a description.
The drawing is a part sectional elevation of the gage embodying my improvements.
As illustrated in the drawing, the gage fixtures 1 and 1' are connected together by the glass 2 and the tie rod 3, and to the boiler drum at by the couplings 5 and 5.
The drum at communicates by the coupling 5 with a passage 7 which extends through the fixture l to the bottom of the glass 2, the passage containing the port 8 adapted to be closed automatically by the ball or check valve 9 and the port 10 adapted to be closed by the valve 11 having the manually operated stem 12. A branch passage 13 in the fixture 1 provides a by-pass from the coupling 5 around the ports 8 and 10, the branch passage being provided with an outlet port 14 adapted to be closed by the valve 15 having the manually operated stem 16. The fixture 1 is provided with the usual blowoff cock 17.
The drum i communicates by the coupling 5 with the passage 7 extending through the fixture 1' to the top of the glass 2', the passage containing the port 8 controlled by the automatic ball or check valve 9' and the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1917.
Serial No. 144,166.
port 10 controlled by the valve 11' having the manually operated stem 12. A branch passage 13 in the fixture 1 provides a bypass from the coupling 5 around the ports 8 and 10, the branch passage being provided with an outlet port 14 controlled by the valve 15 provided with the manually operated stem 16.
In operation, the valves 9, 11, 9 and 11 are normally open and the valves 15 and 15 are closed, when the gage operates in the usual manner it in good order. But it sometimes happens that the passage 7 or 7 becomes obstructed, as by the sticking oi' the valve 9 or 9 in the ports 8 or 8 or by the accumulation of obstructing matter, which prevents free circulation between the drum and the glass through the passages 7 and 7. The condition of these passages can be tested and the correct water level in the boiler determined by opening the valves 15 and 15, permitting flow through the by- passages 13 and 13.
It will be understood that the gage can be blown out in various ways when the cook 17 is open, as by closing the valves 11 and 15 and openin the valves 15 and 11, when the lower fixture is washed out through the by-pass 13, and by closing the valves 11 and 15 and opening the valves 15 and 11, when steam is blown through the gage by way of the upper by-pass 13.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination. with a boiler, of a gage comprising a sight tube, a fixture con taining a passage communicating with said tube, a passage communicating with said boiler and said passage first named, a manually operated valve controlling communication between said passages, an automatic valve between said valve first named and said boiler, a lay-pass communicating with said first and second named passages, and a valve controlling said bypass.
2. A gage comprising a pair of fixtures each containing a passage, a glass connecting the passages of said fixtures, an automatic check valve adapted for controlling each of said passages, a manually operated valve adapted for controlling each of said passages, a bypass around said valves in each of said fixtures, and a valve for controlling each of said by-passes.
3. The combination with a boiler drum, of a gage comprising a pair oi fixtures each containing a passage connected with said said glass, and a by-pass in each fixture for drain, a glass tube connecting said passages connecting said drum with each end of said an automatic Valve adapted for checking glass. 0 flow from said drum through each of said In testimony whereof I have hereunto set passages to said glass, a manually operated my name this 18th day of January 1917.
valve adapted for stopping the flow from said drum through each of said passages to \VILLIAM L. GEDDES.
