Description

WILLIAM `FIELDS.
Improvement in Door or Shutter Fasteners.
No. 123,816'. Patented Feb.2o,1a72. Zzgl 'UNITED STATES PATENT @Errea WILLIAM FIELDS, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR OR SHUTTER FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,816, dated February 20, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit knownthat I, WM. FIELDS, of Wilmington, Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door and Shutter Fasteners, of which the following is a specilication:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a .device for holding a door wide open and shutters back in position after they have been once opened, as will be more fully described hereafter and set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l isa side elevation of my invention as shown attachedto the shutter in a closed condition. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the stop. side view of my invention, showing the position of the various parts when the shutter is open.
A represents a common windowfra1ne,in tended for one or two shutters, B, as may be desired. Secured to the sill C is ametallic stop, D, having, preferably, an inclined circular surface upon its top, and which is cut away at its outer end, so as to form an abrupt shoulder, a. Secured to the lower edge ofthe shutter is a hinged metal plate, G, which is attached by means of a staple or some similar device, or is hinged to-another plate in such amanner that it has a free verticahmovement. While the shutter is closed, this plate rests upon the top of the stop D, as shown in Fig. l, and is pressed up against the edge of the shutter 5 but as soon as the shutter is thrown open, the plate Fig. 3 is a slides over the top of the stop, until the end has passed the shoulder a, when it at once falls from its own weight, so that its end, resting against the shoulder, forms a sure and effective guard against the shutter being closed until the end is raised by means of the catch or handle b provided for that purpose.
The advantages of my device are many and obvious. It is exceeding simple, consisting of but two pieces, that cannot get out of repair, is cheap, and does not require the services of a skilled mechanic to attach it, and, being attached to the inner corner of a shutter, a person desiring to close the shutter does not have to lean out of the window to reach it. Instead of the stop being of the form and shape shown, I may use any other one so constructed that it will present a shoulder, against which the end of the" plate G can rest, so as to hold the shutter in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-
