WASHBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented An n 21, 1917.
Application filed November 7, 1916. Serial No. 129,962.
To all whom it may cc=nco7-11..'
.30 it known that I, NIOOLA TAGUONE, a ci izeu of the United States, and a resident of Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a cer tain new and useful Improvement in lVashboards, of which the following is a specification.
One of the principal objects of my invention'is to provide an improved washboard which can quickly and conveniently be adjusted to assume various angular positions consistent with the requirement for comfort of its individual user. 1
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a washboard having means for holding it against accidental displacement relatively to the tub in conjunction with which it is being used and having an adjustable supporting means whereby the angle of the board may be conveniently varied when desired, the supporting means being connected with the board in such relation thereto as not to interfere with the natural movements of the user.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved adjustable washboard which may be supported when in use in convenient relation with a washtub,.but which will not project into the washing fluid contained in the tub.
l Vith these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanyiug drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which Figure 1 represents a view in perspective ot a washboard constructed according to my invention, showing the same in operation;
Fig. 2 represents a rear elevational view of the board with the supporting means shown in extended position;
Fig. 3 represents a side elevational view of the board, partly in section, showing the supporting means in collapsed or closed position;
Fig. 1 represents a view in section taken 1 horizontally on the plane indicated by the line -l& of Fig. 3.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a rectangular base board 5 having its intermediate portion corrugated on one side as at 6, to provide a suitable scrubbing surface, and having one end portion 7,
which may be termed the lower end, tapered 4 A marginal rail 8 extends entirely around the board except at the lower end, which is open as at 9, to allow of the washing fluid running from the board back into the tub 8. The surface above the corrugated portion 6, similarly to the surface 7 below the corrugated portion, is flat, and a suitable receptacle 10 for receiving soap is formed by the provision of a right-angular partition 11 connecting the portions of the rail at the upper end and one side of the board, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1.
The lateral edges of the corrugated portion 6 are beveled as at 12, and the lateral portions of the surface 7 are grooved as at 13, so that suitable drainage means for the board is thus provided, it being understood that the grooves 13 form extensions of the drain means defined between the beveled portions 12 and the lateral rail of the board.
On the under surface of the base board 5,
at a point suitably removed from the lower end of the board, is secured a transversely arranged block 1% forming a foot which rests against the edge of the tub or other receptacle 8, as in Fig. 1, and which retains the board againstlongitudinal displacement toward the tub.
Secured transversely against the under face of the base board 5, at a distance from the upper edge thereof, is a block 15. Hingedly connected with the block is a pair of spaced arms 16, longitudinally slotted to receive bolts 17 carried by spaced boards or legs 18. The members 18 are rigidly secured together at their lower ends by a cross piece 19, and the members 16 are similarly connected by a cross piece 20. The lower ends of the legs 18 are adapted to rest against the floor in the manner indicated in Fig. 1., for acting in conjunction with the arms 16 in supporting the washboard. The members 18 are slidable longitudinally of the members 16, whereby various angular inclinations of the board may be acquired, and by tightening the wing nuts 21 with which the bolts 17 are equipped, against the members 16, the legs 18 and 16 will be locked so that the board will remain in its adjusted position.
In. order that the legs or members 18' will be properly guided relatively to the members 16 and will be prevented from swinging laterally in either direction upon the bolts 17, cotiperating dove-tailed tongues and grooves are provided on the members 18 and 16, as indicated respectively at 22' interference with the free and natural movements of the person using the board wil -1' be experienced.
The under surface of the block is beveled as at 24,. and the; upper squared: ends of the arms 16 are adapted, when the board is swung into its greatest angular relation with respect to the arm 16', to; rest against this beveled edge, so' that, as will be understood, a slight angular inclination will be giwen to the board even when it 1s moved into its greatest angular relation with re ening the wing nuts.
Although I have described the preferred. embodiment of my invention, 1 may desire to make such changes in the constructlon,
combination, and arrangement of parts thereof, as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A wash-board having a block secured thereto at a point removed from its lower end, said block adapted to engage against a receptacle in conjunction with which the board is used forpreventing longitudinal movement of the board into the receptacle, a second block secured to the board at a point removed from its upper end, a pair of spaced arms hingedly connected with said second block, and provided with longitudinally extending slots, a pair of spaced legmembers connected together and slidably adjustable lon itudinally of the said arms, bolts carried by the legmembers extend ing through the slots the arms, and
means carried by said hol-ts. adapted to be tightened against, sald armsv for. securlng the leg members 111 ad usted position long-i,-
tudinally thereof.v
2. A washboa-rd having ablock secured thereto, said block having its under face beveled, and an extensibleand adjustable supporting; member hingedly connected with the block and including arms having squared upper ends adapted, when the board is. moved into its greatest angular relation with the said supporting member to engage against the beveled face of the block for preventing movement oi" the board into position at right angles, tothe said supporting member.
3. A washboard having a supporting member hinged thereto, a pair oi upper and a pair of lowerspaced arms, the upper and lower arms being adjustable relatively to each other,mea:1-1s for binding the arms together at will for securing them in adjusted position, and means. connecting the lower arms together and serving as a foot rest NICOLA 'rAcuoNn Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents ea-c-h, by addressing the "Gommissioner of Patents,
