Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14, 1917.
Application illed July 19, 1916. Serial No. 110,047.
To all wlwmz't may concern.'
Be it known that we, HENRY C. Bofrrr, Jr., and CHARLES M. PRIOR, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of 5 New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State vof New ork, have invented a new and Improved Smokers Stand, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relatesto a smokers stand and it has prove the construction of articles of this character so as to do away with dust, odor, danger of fire, muss or other troubles, and at the same 'time improve the appearance and utility of the device.
more specific object of the invention is the provision of a stand provided with a chambe drawer that is adapted to receive the ashes, burnt matches and cigarette and cigar ends from the tray through a hollow column or tubular connection which supports the tray on the base.
Another object is the employment of an open bottom cup which it fitted in the tray and through which the ashes, match sticks, etc., can be dropped into the column, said cup serving to prevent cigars or cigarettes m dropping from the usual rests into the tray and sliding therefrom into 'the column.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
n the -accompanying drawing, which illustrates certain embodiments of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a stand the floor;
Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, of a stand which is adapted to rest on a table; an
Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, of a convertible stand adapted for floor or table use.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the base, B the column and C the tray of the stand. The arts of the stand may be made of any suita le material and of any desired for its general objects to imer 1 open at one s1de, as at 2,
he column B may be a single piece of,"
tubing 5 ofrconsiderblelength, as shown p l tubular,. piece 5, as "shown in Fig. 2, or it may be made up of a plurality of sections b, b2, as shown in Fig. 3. The lower end of the tubular stem or column is attached in any suitable manner to the base, as, for instance, by being screwed into a ring 6 in the top of the base. The tray C is in the form of a pan 7 containing a glass dish or lining, both the pan and the lining 8 having a central opening for attachment with the upper end of the co1- umn. The bottom of'the pan`7 is provided with a collar 9 into which the column or stem screws. Removably tted into the upper end of the stem or column is a cup 10 which serves to prevent the cigarettes or cigars from slipping off the rests 11 into the hollow column or stem, but the cup 10, which is open at the bottom, aiiords a way for dropping ashes, match sticks or the like into the column so as to drop into the drawer 3. Ashes which drop into the dish 8 can be readily scraped into the column after removing the cup 10 by lifting it out of the column. The tray besides rests 11 is provided with a 12 and other conveniences. serves to retain the dish 8 in the latter is to be removed cup is rst taken out.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the variousl sections of the column or stem are telescopically connected so that the stand can be heightened for use on the Hoor or contracted for use on a table.
A smokers stand of the character herein set forth is of attractive and pleasing appearance and appropriate for homes, clubs, smo g rooms, etc. The device is sanitary and prevents odors and dust'from rising.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and `method of operation will be readily under- 'stood by those skilled 'n the art to which the invention appertains, and while we have described the principle of operation, together match box holder The cup 10 also place, and when for cleaning, the
having the usual with the device which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, we desire merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by-Letters Patent:
1. A smokers stand comprising a chambered base, adrawer in the base, ka tubular stem rising om the base and havingits lower end disposed over the drawer to discharge into the same, a tray carried by the u er end of the stem, and an open-bottom cup attached to the upper end of the stem and disposed in the tray and projecting above the bottom of the latter to ermit ashes, match sticks, and cigarette an cigar ends to be dropped through the stem to the drawer.
2. A smokers stand comprising a. chambered base, a tubular stem, a. tray carried by an open-bottom cup inserted in the upper end and disposed in the tray and projecting above the bottom thereof, and. cigar rests on the tray, said cup serving to prevent cigars and the like from slip ing into the stem from oi the rests, and t e cup being 'removable to permit the contents oi the tray to be gischarged through a stem to the chambered ase.
