Be it known that l, CHARLES E. GoDLnY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of' ilichigan, have invented a new .and Improved Lamp with Pivoted Reflector, of which the following is a specification.
`This invention relates to means for varying the general direction and the character of the beams of light projected by lamps ot the headlight type, by swinging the reector of the lamp and at the same time moving the source of light toward. or from the focal center of the reflector.
. This invention consists and a reflector pivotally mounted therein, a lamp-bulb and a support therefor slidably mounted in the reflector, means for swinging the reflector on itspivots, and a lever system mounted on the reflector and connected to the lamp body whereby the lampbulb support will be slid in or out as the reflector is swung on its pivots. 1t further consists in adjustably mounting the .member connecting this lever'mechanismto the body so that the incandescent filament in the lamp-bulb may be moved to the focal center of the reflector. This invention further consists in the details of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The lamp body 1 shown in the drawings is of any desired construction, but is preferably cup-shaped and provided with a door consisting of the ring 2 and lens 3. in auxiliary ring 4 having a flange 5 at its inner edge is mounted in this body and carries the pivots 6 for the reflector A coupling 8 of any desired type may be mounted in the body 1 and constitutes the connection between the wires 9 and 10.

The ring 4 carries a pair of' small lugs 22 between which the bar 23 is slidable. An up- ,turned `front end 24 of this bar is threaded to receive the screw 25 carried by the ring means of this screw the bar can be moved parallel to the axis of the lamp body. The spring 26 connecting to the rear end of this bar and tothe flange' 16 on the plate 15 pulls this bar rearwardly. A. pin 27 is carried by the ear 18 and on this pin a small lever is pivoted. The outerend of the arm 28 of this lever is in the form of a cam that engages an ear 29 on the rear .end of the con nector 12. A tension spring 30 extends from toV pull the connector forward while a link 32 entends from a pin 38 carried by the arm 3% of the lever to a pin preferably integrally formed on the 'bar 23. This pin 35 may be slipped A into or out of the hole 36 in this link when the link is turned at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 2.
l/Vhen the axis of the 'reflector coincides with the axis of the lamp body and the lamp `is mounted on an automobile, the screw 25 is turned until the lamp bulb is in proper focus, which will cause the beam of light to be concentrated onto a point in the roadway some distance ahead of the vehicle. A pin 37 holds the reflector in this position. When the reflector is inthe position she-wn in Fig. 1, the beam of light will be blurred plate 15 having flanges 16 and exist. `The details and proportions of the parts may all be varied without departing from the'sprit of my invention.
I claim :M
1. The combination of a lamp body and e reflector pivotally mounted therein, a lampbulb and a support therefor slidable in the rear end of the reflector, and a cam mounted on the reflector for moving said bulb in one direction and permitting it to move in the opposite direction as the reflector is swung in one direction or the other on its pivots.

The combination of a lamp body and a reflector pivotally mounted therein, manually operable means to swing the reflector' in one direction on its pivot, a spring to swing the reflector in the opposite direction, a lamp bulb and a support therefor movably carried by the reflector, a cam for moving the bulb in one'direction as the reflector is swung by said manually operable means and a spring to return the bulb when the reflec tor is swung back by the spring.
4. The combination of a lamp body and a reflector pivotally' mounted therein, manually operable means to swing the reflector' in one direction, a bar connected to said body, a spring connected to said bar and to said reflector to return the same, a lamp bulb and a, support therefor slidably mounted in the reflector, a.v cam mounted on the reflector, a link connected to the cam and to said bar to move the bulb rearwardly when t-he reflector is swung in one direction, and a spring to return the bulb when the reflector is swung in the opposite direction.
5. The combination of a lamp body and a reflector pivotally n'iountedtherein, manually operable means to swing the reflector in one direction, a bar connected to said body,
a spring connected to. said bar and to said reflector to return the same, a lamp bulb and a support therefor slidably mounted in the reflector', a cam mounted on the reflector, a link connected to the cam and to said bar to move the bulb rearwardly when the reflector is swung in one direction, a spring to return lampfbulb mounted in the front end of theconnector, al 'spring to more the connector and latini-bulb forward, a lever fulcrumed on the reflector and haring a cam at the end of one arin to engage the extension on the connector to force it back, and a link connected to the other arm of the lever' to cause it to swing to force the connector rearwardly when the reflector is tipped. down.
7. The combination of a lamp body, a reflector pivotally mounted therein, a con nector tube slidable in the rear end of the reflector and having a lateral extension, a lamp-bulb mounted in the front end of the connector, a spring to move the connector and lamp-bulb forward, a lever fulcrumed on the reflector and having a cam at the end of one arm to engage the extension on the connector to force it back, a linlrconnected lo the other arm of the lever to cause it to swing to force the connector rearwardly when the reflector is tipped down, flexible means to swing down the rear end of the reflector and to force the lamp-bulb rearward, und a spring to restore the reflector to normal position.
