To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARTVIG ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tension-Sheaves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rope tensioning sheaves and has more particular reference to slack adjusting devices for clothes-line supports, tennis nets, tent grips and the llke, having for its especial object to provide a device of this character having means to conveniently take up the slack and to hold a given portion or section of the l1ne ta ut, while the other end is free or is being carried to another similar support.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pulley or sheave-support upon which the line may readily and quickly be placed without threading either end through eyes or openings overlying the grooved edge in the pulley and without passing the. free end of the line around or under the taut portion thereof.
Still another object of my invention is to cheapen the cost of production of such devices and at the same time to improve the structure.
Other and further objects of my inventlon will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description, when taken in conjunction with the drawings, where1n Figure 1 is a plan view of the tensioning device, or clothes-line support.

In all the views the same referencecharacters are employed to indicate similar parts.
It will be observed that substantially the entire device is made of sheet metal stamped out and formed up.
The base plate portion of the device con sists of the plate 10 having a downturned peripheral flange 11 extending a considerable distance around the plate to give it strength and finish and in the unflanged portion provided with a perforation in whlch an eyelet 12 is placed to reinforce the metal plate at this point and to provide an orifice by which the device may be supported upon a nail, screw or hook 13. The central round portion 14 is dome-shape extending above the upper fiat surface 16 of the plate. The sheave, or pulley 15, consists of two cupshaped members 17 and 18 held together by a plurality of attaching parts 19, which are preferably punched from the lower member 18 and passed through perforations that register therewith in the outer member 17 and are outturned and headed over as clearly sliownat 19. The lower member 18 is provided on its periphery with a series of ratchet teeth 20, which are contained in an annular depression 21 formed in the plate 10. The pulley 15 is held rotatively in association with the dome portion lt of the plate 10 by means of an eyelet 22, preferably formed integral with the upper pulley member 17 and provided with an annular rim 23 which overlies the margin of a central perforation in the dome 14. The pulley members 17 and 18 may be formed at intervals with oppositely registering radially eX- tending ribs 2525, so that the rope or line may be more firmly held in the groove of the pulley.
A ratchet pawl 27 is provided on its inwardly projecting end with a tapered tooth 28 to lie in the interdental space between the teeth of the ratchet. This pawl is provided with a head 29 and a reduced squared shank. 30. The entire pawl lies in a substantially radial plane with the aXis of the pulley 15 and is yieldingly pressed inwardly,
, by an open helical spring 31. The flange 11 of the base is punched with a square hole to admit the shank 80 of the pawl 27. A' slit 33 is made into the perforation from the outer edge of the flange and a lip 34: is thus provided. This lip is then bent outwardly until the pawl can be pressed in place and is then bent back into position, as shown in Figl l to hold the pawl. The front end of the pawl passes through a square hole in the wall 35 bounding the groove or depression 21. A stud 36, made preferably of sheet metal is provided preferably with an integral ovalhead or cap 37 and a lower cylindrical part 38. Near the bottom of this cylindrical part it is reduced in'diameter to provide a shoulder and hollow stud 39. The part 39 is passed through an opening in the wall 16 of the upper portion of the plate and is flanged, as at 40, to
firmly hold the stud 36 in place. 7
The use of the device is as follows: The rope member 42 is secured at one end to some unyielding support and it is then brought to the pulley or tensioning device and placed under the head 37 of the stud 36 rope sections are in the parallel position,
whereby the pulley will be rotated and the pawl 27 engaging the teeth 20 of the ratchet wheel will cause the rope member or section 42 to be held taut in its position. The rope section, shown at 44, may then be turned around the head 37 of the stud 36, at substantial right angles, as shown at 45, and carried to some other point where another pulley support of similar character may be located, to support and to give tension to the section 45 of the rope, and so on, any number of tension pulleys or sheaves may be used, each one serving as a means for taking up the slack or tensioning the section of rope to which it is connected and holding the rope under tension while the loose end thereof is being carried to another similar supporting device.
The device is pivoted to a support (13) in the perforation 12-in the plane of the base. The strain on the rope section 42 causes a depression of the free end of the structure which causes the rope section 42 to move toward the head 37 of the stud. This action pushes the upper section 45 into intimate contact with the abrupt shoulder 37 formed by the head of the stud thus retaining the rope taut on the rope-gripping member 15.
The rope, may be disengaged by pulling on the end 32 of the pawl to permit the pulley to be rotated, thereby relieving the strain, or the loose end may be disengaged from the studand pulley to relieve the tension.
While I have herein shown a single embodiment of my invention for the purpose ofclear disclosure it is manifest to personsstantially filling the concave side of one" member and a bearing carried by said support.

4. A device of the character escribed comprising a rotatable rope-gripping pulley; a base upon which said pulley is rotatably mounted; means to prevent the pulley from rotating in one direction and to permit it to rotate in the opposite direction mounted on the base cooperating with said ratchet; means to attach the device to a fixed support and.a headed stud secured to the base at one side of the pulley.
6. A device of the character described comprising a base of sheet metal with a concentric groove pressed therein around-a central dome; a rotatable pulley having a concaved side neatly overlying said dome, the peripheral edge of said side bearing a ratchet; a pawl engaging said ratchet; a stud secured to the base at one side of the pulley and means to' attach the device to a fixed support at the opposite side of said.

9. A device of the character described comprising a grooved rotatable rope gripping member; a headed stud, the shank of which is substantially of uniform diameter mounted adjacent thereto; means for holding the rope gripping member against rotation in one direction; and means for releasing the aforesaid holding means.
