Description

W. GRAY.
VEHICLE LAMP. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 18. 1915.
I Patented Aug. 7, 1917.
WILLIAM enny, or nnooxmnn, MASSACHUSETTS.
' VEHICLE-LAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be-it .known that I, WILLIAM "GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain" new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to bee full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en- "able others skilled in the'art to which it 7 appertains to make and use the same. The present invention relates to an improvement. in vehicle lamps. In autompbile lamps now. in use, a parabolic reflector is used with an incandescent lamp bulb supported with its filament at or near the focus of the reflector. In-use, these lamps pro ect' "a beam of light from the lamp in'the direction of the axisof the reflector, but some 'rays are emitted directly from the filament itself, and these rays, together withsome re- I flected raysemanating from portions of the filament not located at the focus of the re- ..flector are dispersed, and pedestrians and other persons using the road, meeting a vehicle carrying such lamps are often more .or less blinded by the dazzling light. great variety of attempts have been made to produce non-glaring or non-dazzling lamps I which will efficiently light the road and at the same time not dazzle or impair the vision of persons meeting the vehicle carrying such lamps. The object of the present invention is to produce a'head lamp of such construction that'persons traveling along a road,
-fieither on foot or 'injvehicles, will not be blinded by the lamps of an approaching. vehicle carrying lamps of the construction of'this invention, while the driver of that vehicle will have good road illumma-tion.
To this end the present invention consists in the lamp hereinafter described and part1cu-. I larly defined in the claims.
- the'accompanying drawings.illustrat-' in'gthe-preferred for'm'of the invention, Flgure 1 is a plan, Fig. 2 afront elevation;
;.' and Fig. 3 aside elevation of the lamp.-
The body]. of the lamp is of general para- .a'pecification of Letters Patent.
. manner.. The front portion, however, of the Patented-Aug. '7. 1917. '1 f Application filed March 18, 1915. Serial No. 15,153.
lamp body, is extended forward at 2 at the top and bottom, and the front glassiis made of two portlons, so that the lamp front is V-shaped in horizontal section. Viewing the lamp in front elevation, as seen in'Fig. 2,
the right-hand portion 3 is of frosted glass,
left-hand portion 4 is of clear glass, or trans-' parent materlal. The clear glass portion comprises one vertical half of the lamp front and affords full road illumination, while the frosted portion 3 comprises the other vertical half of the lamp front and prevents rays of light extending from the lamp toward the. left, so that persons on foot or in vehicleson the left-hand side of the vehicle will not be dazzled by light from the lamp. In America, where the rule of. the road requires one to pass vehicles moving in the opposite direction by turning to the right, the frosted portion of the glass would be in the position shown in the drawings, that is, on the right-hand side of the lamp, as viewed from the front, while elsewhere, in places where the rule of the road requires meeting vehicles to pass to the left, the
frosted portion would be on the left-hand being, therefore, non-transparent or impervious to direct light transmission, while the cuts off the direct transmission of light.
So, the word impervious, as used herein, is
not intended to limit the invention to constructions in which illumination is afforded by the blind side of the lamp.
a essee e Having thus described the iiiventiomwhat closure, V-shaped in hoii zon ta l cr ss-secis claimed is: I tion, one side of which is of non-transparent 20? 1-1. A v elhiflle lamp llilaving a body and front material.
