LINFORD J. DAVIS, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
covnann REcnrTAcLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24., 1917.
Application filed September 25, 1916. Serial N 0. 122,077
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINFORD J. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covered Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in covered receptacles.
My improvements are especially designed by me for embodiment in garbage or waste holders and I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawing as I have so embodied them.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved receptacle support and cover operating means.
Second, to provide an improved receptacle support and cover operating means which permits the removal and changing of the receptacle as may be desired.
Third, to provide an improved receptacle support and cover operating means in which the cover is locked and the receptacle retained upon its support by the locked cover.
Fourth, to provide a structure embodying these advantages which is simple and easy to operate and not likely to get out of repair.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a front perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my invention, the cover being shown in its open position by dotted lines, the operating parts being also shown in cover opening position by dotted lines.
Fig. II is a detail central section from front to rear.
Fig. III is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. II.
Fig. IV is an enlarged detail side elevation showing the operating connections for the actuating levers to the hinged cover member.
Fig. V is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 55 of Fig. I, showing further details of'the cover actuating mechanlsm.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the-section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the receptacle 1, illustrated, is the well-known type of garbage can or receptacle. The receptacle cover is formed of a rear member 2 and a front member 3, the front member being hinged to the rear memberby means of the pintle 4 and suitable hinge knuckles formed on the cover members. The cover members 2 and 3 have complementary flange sections 5 and provide the rear leg. The rear upright 11 is provided with a loop-like arm 12 whilethe side uprights have arms 13 on which the rear cover member 2 is mounted so that-,the receptacle may be slipped under the same when the front cover member is raised.
The arms 13 of the side uprights are disposed adjacent the cover hinge so that the rear cover section is very securely supported. The loop arm 12 constitutes a handle or hand piece and has a stop for the hinged cover member, which is provided with a reinforcing bar 14 adapted to engage the stop.
I secure the arms 15 to the cover so as to project downwardly and rearwardly therefrom, the arms having ,holes therein to receive the cover pintle 4. The arms 15 have strap extensions 17 secured on the top of the front cover member 3.
The actuating levers 18 are mounted on pivots 19 on the side uprights and are provided with slots 20 having transverse portions 21 at their upper ends adapted to engage the pins 22 on the arms when the covers. are closed, thus constituting a lock for the cover. The cover is adapted to rest on the receptacle when the cover is closed so that it serves as a means for effectively securing the receptacle on the support. The bail-shaped foot lever 23 is mounted on the pivots 19 and" connected to the actuating lever 18 by the links M. Then the foot lever is pressed the actuating levers are carried forward to disengage the pins from the locking portions 21 of the slots (see Fig. IV) and further movement raises the cover.
The coiled spring 25, secured at one end to one of the uprights and at the other to the foot lever, returns the cover to its closed position and counteracts the weight of the lever.
The cross base member 7 has an upward offset 26 at its front end which assists in retaining the receptacle in position. The rear end of the base 7 is downwardly offset at 27 to permit the tilting of the receptacle as it is raised upon or removed from the base.
l/Vith the parts thus arranged, they are simple and convenient to operate and the receptacle is effectively locked and the cover locked in its closed position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a receptacle, a cover comprising front and rear members, the front member being hinged, and a receptacle and cover support comprising crossed base members, the base member disposed from front to rear being upwardly offset at its front end to provide a receptacle retaining member and downwardly oflset at its rear end to permit the tilting of the receptacle as it is arranged upon or removed from the support, and side and rear uprights provided with inwardly projecting arms to which the rear cover member is mounted so that the receptacle may be arranged upon the base under the rear cover member when the front cover is raised, the arm of the rear upright being formed into a loop and constituting a hand piece and a stop for the hinged cover member, the arms of the side uprights being disposed adjacent the cover hinge.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a receptacle, a cover comprising front and rear members, the front member being hinged, and a receptacle and cover support comprising crossed base members, the base member disposed from front to rear being upwardly offset at its front end to provide a receptacle retaining member and downwardly offset at its rear end to permit the tilting of the receptacle as it is arranged upon or removed from the support,
