Beit known that LBENJAMIN F. KELLEY, a c1t1zen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in clamps and is intended for use in holding the line or cable to which is attached the itzools in drilling deep wells of every descrip-- lon. Y The clamp is adapted to be suspended below the temper screw by links and is adapted to hold the line or cable so firmly that the weight of the tools cannot slip the line through it so that the tools can only descend as fed out by the temper screw.
A simple and satisfactory embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me,.

The clamp in the construction illustrated is in the nature of what is generally lmown in the art as a three-piece clamp and includes a back member which is substantially C- shaped in planv and which is in the nature of a socket, the said back being indicated by the numeral 1. The member 1, from what l will term its linner face is channeled or otherwise formed with a pocket 2 disposed a suitable distance from the opposite ends of the casting, the inner wall of the pocket being rounded to conform to the outer contour of the casting, and the side walls of the pocket being concaved, as at 3,' while the .ed below the temper screw o corners provided by the said side walls areA vthe sides of the same being rounded providing the corners 0f the knuckles with what may be termed beads 8. The knuckles are adapted to be received in the pocket of the casting 1` and the beads 8 are adapted to engagewith the rounded side walls provided by the pockets. The inner faces of the knuckles are straight, except for the outer edges thereof which are inclined away from each other and the said inner straight faces are each provided with registering curved depressions extending the entire length of the said knuckles and these depressions are adapted to receive a pin 9 which passes through a suitable opening 10 in one or both of the end walls of the casting or socket member 1, and by this arrangement it will be noted that the jaws 5 and 6 are hingedly secured to the back casting or socket member. Each of the jaws, 'outward of` the knuckle 7 and atthe portion thereof projecting outwardly of the pocket of the castingl 1s widened and upon the upper`-v surface of the said widened portions, adjacent to the said knuckles there are formed hook members 10, each of said hooks adapted to receive the end member of` a plurality of links 11-11 whereby the device ma f7 the drilling apparatus (not shown).
The straight inner faces of the knuckles may communicate with similar substantially straight faces 13 upon the inner surfaces of the jaws 5 and 6, but the said jaws from the referred to straight surfaces 13 are gradu- -ally flared outwardly to the ends of the said j The vsurfaces 13, inwardly of the be suspendprovided with ribs 19, and these ribs are adapted to be received for a portion of their length in depressions 20 provided in the side walls of the groove 14. By this arrangement itwill be noted that the rope slips 16 may be moved downwardly ofthe jaws 5 and 6 through the groove 14 and the ribs 19 are received within the depressions 20, when the tongue 18 will be disposed opposlte the notch 15 and by an inward pressure be received in the said notch. This method of securing the rope slips to the jaws is an important feature of the invention as in all other constructions with which I am aca construction time and labor are required,
while with a construction as just described the rope slips may be readily inserted within the jaws or easily removed therefrom as desired.
Each of the jaws, 5 and 6, at the outer end thereof, is centrally provided with a transverse slot or opening 21, and the said jaws, upon their outer faces and to the opposite sides of the said opening are formed with concaved enlargements 22-22. Within each of these concavities is adapted to be received the longitudinal portions. 23-23 of Ts 24 and 25 respectively.- The longitudinal member of theT 24 is of a materially greater length than that of the member 22 of the T 25, and the said longitudinal member of the T 25 is adapted to be received in the concavities 23 of the jaw 5 and to project beyond the opposite ends of the said jaw. The member 23 at the portion thereof in a line with the upper and lower edges of the jaw is provided with transverse rounded openings 26-26, and the transs verse orcentral member 27 of the T 24 is adapted to be received in the notch or out awayportion 21 of the said jaw 5. The central -portion 28 of the T 25 is adapted to bereceived in the notch or cut away portion 21 of the jaw 26 and the longitudinal member 23 thereof is adapted to be received in the lower portions of the concavities 22 of the said jaw 6. The enlargements provided by the concavities 22 upon the jaws 6 project only a slight distance above the opposite .longitudinal edges provided by the notch or cut away portion'26 in the said jaw which to the opposite edges of the jaw in a line with the said concavity is formed with outwardly extending ears 29-29, the same being provided with openings through which pass hinge bolts 30-30 that have their ends reduced, as at 31, to engage in the threaded bores 32 at the ends of the longitudinal member 23 of the T 24. rl`he bolts 30 are also adapted to pass through eyes 31 formed upon one of the ends of guide rods 32', the said guide rods being disposed transversely over the ears and having their ends passed through the openings 26 in the longitudinal member 23 of the T 24. The members 23 and 24 are each centrally bored, the said bore passing through the members 27 and 28 and each of these bores is provided with threads, the threads of the bore of the member 24 being at a different pitch o r angle from the threads in the member 25.
The numeral 33 designates the adjusting member or bolt, the same from its center being provided with oppositely pitched threads 34 and 35, and the said member having one of its ends secured to an operating handle 36. It is, of course, to be understood that the oppositely pitched threads of the bolt 33 engage with the registering pitched threads in the members 24 and 25 and by operating the handle 36 it will be noted that the jaws may be brought toward or away from each other whereby to effectively clamp the' rope in the rope slips 16 so that the clamp may be effectively sustained upon the said rope or line or the rope or line may be permitted to pass in or out of the clamp.
. By hinging the j aws. and by operating the same through the medium of a right and left hand screw andthe elements connected with the jaws and screws, it will be noted that a great amount of power will be imparted to the clamp, that the construction is such as to insure the positive operation of the parts and a great strength to the vconstruction. It will be further noted that in lieu of the single long link now commonly employed in att..ching the clamp to the temresinas cluding a flexible suspending means, a back member having a central pocket, jaws having their ends provided with knuckles received within the said pocket to hingedly connect the aws with the said back member, means between the back member and the meeting faces of the knuckles for retaining the knuckles within the socket and the jaws hingedly connected with the back member,
removable rope slips for each of the jaws, and means disposed transversely of the free ends of the jaws and operable to relatively adjust the same and to hold the same in such adjusted position.
2. A clamp for the purpose set forth including flexible supporting means, a back member having a central pocket, the side walls of which being rounded, two jaws each having one of their ends formed with a knuckle having a rounded edge adapted to engage with the rounded side of the pocket, means comprising a pin passing through the socket and engaging the grooves in the confronting faces of the knuckles for retaining the knuckles in the pocket, rope slips comprising each a substantially rectangular member having one of its faces rooved longitudinally and received in con ronting depressions in the inner faces of the jaws, means integrally formed with the said slips and with the said jaws for retaining the slips in the said grooves, and means comprising an oppositely pitched screw engaging with elements associated with the jaws for relatively adjusting the jaws.
3. A clamp for the purpose set forth including aback, a pair of jaws each having one of their ends removably and hingedly connected with the back, grooved rope slips in the confronting faces of the jaws, said jaws being centrally slotted at their outer edges and being provided with concaved enlargements extending in opposite directions from the said slots, a 'IF-shaped member within each of the concavities and having litt its central portion disposed in the slot, one of said jaws beyond its referred to concaved portion having its edges formed with outstanding elements, a hinge bolt passing through the ears and engaging in the opposite ends of the 'l' associated with said jaw, guide rods connected with the bolts and passing through openings in the longitudinal member of the other T, the central member of both of the Tshaving bores and having threads disposed at opposite pitches, an oppositely pitched bolt engaging withthe lthreads in the said bores, and a handle for the bolt.
4. A clamp for the purpose set forth, including a back member having. a central pocket, jaws having their ends provided with knuckles received in the said pocket to hingedly connect the jaws with the said back member, means for retaining the knuckles in the pocket, 'lV-shaped members pivotally connected with the jaws and provided with sockets, means for retaining the sockets in alinement, and an adjustable element -coengaging with the said sockets.
5. A clamp for the urpose set forth comprising, a back member having a central pocket, jaws having one of their ends provided each with a knuckle received in the said pocket to hingedly connect the jaws with the back member,y means, between said jaws, for1 retaining the knuckles in the socket, each of said jaws having its confronting face providedwith oppositely disposed rectangular slots, the inner wall of each of the slots being notched, and the side walls of the slots, at one of the ends thereof, having incut depressions, rope slots designed to be received in the said slots to engage with the notch and depressions to retain the said slots upon the jaws, and means, upon the outer ends of the jaws, for adjusting the said jaws with respect to each other.
