To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SVEYRE BENJAMIN HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, Hudson county, and State of New Jersey, andNiLs KRISTIAN ENOCH NnlssnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Richmond, Richmond county, invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification. Our said invention relates to automatic cut-ofi devices for gas'burners and consists in the combinations .and arrangements elements hereinafter described. and particularly set forth in the accompanying claims.- The invention has for its purpose to pro vide a device of this character which will positively operate to cutoff the flow of gas in the event that the flame should become accidentally extinguished, and which will in no manner interfere. with the illumination when in applied position.
A further purpose of the invention is to construct an automaticcut-oif device for gas burn'ers that may be readily fitted to present gas burners without requiring any alteration in the gas fixture, and which, when in applied position, will allow of the ordinary use of the burner. v
Another object of the invention is to provide a cut-ofi' device that may be so mounted on the gas fixture as to be conveniently swung clear thereof to the end that the gas mantel, or other equipment, may be fitted and adjusted after the ordinary manner.

Referring to the construction in further detail, the device consists of a suitable sup-' port comprising an arm 7 fitted to the pipe of the burner and supporting a block 8 to one side of said pipe; and an upright supportin ,bar or rod 9 is fitted in said block throu an aperture formed therein (see Fig. 3 and said bar has a pin 10 that engages thermostatic and State of NewYork, have .volute spring the mantle therefrom.

The cool: 18 is thereby held in open position, and a 21 is secured at its respective ends to the pipe of the burner, andthelever 17 normally tensions the latter to turn said cook 18 and shut off the gas supply, as will be understood. The turning'plug 18 is also provided with a bar forming members 22 and 23 for turning on the gas by hand and raising said lever to have the stud 16 thereof engaged by the latch rod 13, and in which position the lever is ,held while the gas is burning.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the device as a whole may be conveniently out altering said fixture, and that the same is so designed that the illumination of the flame will not be interfered with; and it will be further evident that the device, when in applied position, may. be swung entirely clear of the burner for the purpose of adjusting the latter or fitting and removing It is obvious that those skilled-in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of our invention, and therefore we do not wish to be limited to such features except claims,

Having thus fully described our said invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An automatic cut-off device for gas burners comprising a suitable support, an upright bar mounted to have vertical movement'on said support, a thermostatic bar depending from said upright bar and having the end thereof constructed to provide a latch, and a 'spring-tensioned arm adapted to be secured to the valve of the gas burner for holding said valve normally closed, said arm adapted to be held in open position by the latch end of said thermostatic bar and released thereby, and said upright bar adapted to be raised to manually release the latch, substantially as set forth. a

An automatic cut-ofi device for gas burners comprising a suitable sup ort having an aperture, a spring tensione and upright bar mounted on said support, a thermostatic bar dependingl mounted on said e end thereof con: structed to provide a latch, said latch engaging within the v a spring-tensioned arm adapted to be secured to the valve of the gas burner for holding said valve normally closed, and a member carried by said arm adapted to be engaged and held by said latch and released and said upright bar adapted to be raised to manually release the latch, substantially as set forth.
3. An automatic cut-ofi device for gas burners comprising a suitable support having a recess, anupright bar mounted on said support and constructed with an an ular dependlngly mounted on said end portion and fitting in the recess of said support providing a latch, a spring-tensioned arm adapted to be secured to the valve of the gas burner for holding said valve normally closed, and a aperture of said support,
stud carried by said arm adapted to fit within said recess to be engaged and held by said latch and released thereby, substantensioned upright bar fitting in said aperture, a thermostatic bar dependingly mounted on said upright bar and fitting within said recess providing a latch, a spring-tensioned arm adapted to be secured to the valve of the gas burner for holding said valve normally closed, and a stud carried by said arm adapted to fit Within said recess to be engaged and held by said latch and released thereby, substantially as set forth.
5. An automatic cut-off device for gas burners comprising'an arm adapted to be fitted on the pipe of the burner and having a suitable support provided with an aperture and a recess, a spring-tensioned upright bar fitting within the aperture of said support and having an angular end portion, a thermostatic bar dependingly mounted on the'angular portion of said upright bar and having its lower end fitting in said recess providing a latch, a spring-tensioned arm adapted to be secured to the valve of the gas burner for holding said valve normally closed, and a stud carried by said arm adapted to be engaged and held by said latch and released thereby, substantially as set forth.
