I Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP JACOB DREHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio,,have invented a certain new and useful Operating Means for Reciprocatory Elements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to pneumatically operated instruments such, for instance, as piano players, organs, orchestrions, and the like, and especially to power operated means for working the air pumps thereof, and has forits object the provision of simple, improved and efficient means of this character whereby to enhance the practicability and commercial value of apparatus of this class. a
A further object of my invention is the provision of a simple power operating means for the pumps of instruments of the class described, which means is capable of being easily and quickly installed in instruments now in use and does not interfere with a foot operating of the pumps in the customary manner.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the case of an instrument with which the invention is associated, and 2-3 the pneumatic pumps or bellows thereof, which are customarily arranged Within the case in spaced relation lengthwise thereof. Each pump is disposed in upright position within the case and has a stationary front side 2 and a movable rear side 2 hinged together at their upper ends, as at 4:, as is well understood in the art. A forked spring 5 connects the front and rear sides of each pump at the upper end portion thereof and acts to normally retain the pumps in closed form, as shown by the pump 3 in Figs. 1 and 2. The lower or free end of the movable side 2 on each pump is connected to a respective foot pedal (not shown) in a suitable manner to cause said pump side to have inward and outward movements imparted thereto with respect to the side 2 thereof when the respective foot pedal is'operated, as is Well understood in the art.
The bellows 2 and 3, in the present instance, have respective links 6 and 7 pivotally projecting rearward from the lower ends of their 1novable sides 2 and pivoted at their outer ends to respective crank or rocker-arms Sand 9. The rocker-arm 8 is pinned or otherwise suitably fixed to a rockshaft 10 mounted in suitable bearings 11 lengthwise of the case 1 at the rear of the bellows, 'while the rocker-arm 9 is loosely mounted on a rock-shaft 12, which is suitably mounted in bearings 13 in parallel relation to the shaft 10 and at the rear of the bellows .3.
The end of the rocker-arm 9 which is sleeved on the shaft 12 has a pinion 14 fixed thereto for turning movements therewith relative to said shaft, said pinion being prevented from movements lengthwise of said shaft, in the present instance, by a screw 15 projecting radially through the pinion and into a registering annular groove 16 in the shaft, as shown in Fig. 5. The pinion 14c meshes with a companion pinion 17 of like size which is loosely mounted on the shaft 10.
Mounted on the shafts 12 and 10 at the outer sides of the respective pinions 14 and 17 are hif able cl t members and 19,
. clutch members. A shipper lever 21 is pivoted to the case, as at 22, and has connection with the bar 20 to impart longitudinal movements thereto when oscillated. Each clutch member 18, 19 has a spring pressed clutch pin 23 projecting from its inner end in position to enter a socket 24 in the adjacent, side of the respective pinion 14, 17 when the clutch member is moved toward the pinion and the socket 24 of the pinion has turned into pin receiving position.
25 designates an electric motor which is in ,driving connection through a sprocket wheel and chain connection 26 with the shaft 27 of a speed reducing transmission gearing 28-. The gearing 28 has a shaft 29 carrying a crank member 30, which is connected by a link 31 to a crank-arm 32 on the adjacent end of the shaft 12, whereby rocking. movements are imparted. to said latter shaft from a continuous rotation of the shaft 29.
3-3 designates an electric switch which is disposed in the motor circuit and operable to open and close such circuit. The switch, in the present instance, is of the knife type and has its movable "member connected by a rod 34 to the shipper lever 21, whereby a movement of the lever to clutch releasing position effects an opening of the switch. A coiled compression spring 35 is disposed on the rod 34c between the lever 21 and movable switch member to permit a relative yielding movement of the lever and switch member when the lever is swung to clutch engaging position, as shown in Fig. 1.
It is evident in the use of my invention that a slow rocking movement of predetermined speed is communicated to the shaft 12 from the motor 25 through the intermediate mechanism and that a movement of the shipper lever 21 in one direction will effect a closing of the switch 33 to start and run the motor 25' and will also move the clutch members 18 and 19 into clutch engagement with the respective pinions l4: and 17 thus causing the pinion 14 and rocker-arm 9 to have rocking movements with the shaft 12, and c'ausingthe pinion .17, which is rocked in unison with the pin- 1011.14, tocommunicate rocking movements to the shaft 10 The rocking movements of the arm 9 are communicated to the movable partof the pump 3 through the link 7,
while the rocking movements of the shaft 10 are communicated to the movable part of the pump 2 through the rocker-arm 8 and link 6. The connections between the shaft 10 and its pump and the shaft 12 and its pump are such that the pumps have alternate pumping movements imparted thereto.
It is evident that when the pinions 14 and 17 are disconnected from the clutch members 18- and 19 the rocker-arms 8 and 9 may have free rocking movements imparted thereto from the respective pumps when such pumps are operated by foot power, so that the manual operation of the pumps is not interfered with.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts as itis capable of numerous modifications without departing from the spirit of the claims.
i Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. The combination with two movable elements of separate rocker-arms connected tosaid elements for operating the same, and mechanical means for rocking said arms in unison and operable to release the arms to permit free rocking movements thereof.
2. The combination with two movable elements of a drive shaft and a driven shaft, la rocker-arm fixed to the driven shaft and connected to one of said elements, a rockerarm loose on the drive shaft and connected to the other of said elements, means for imparting rocking movements to said drive shaft, and means operable to connect the drive shaft and its rocker-arm to cause one to rock with the other and to connect the drive and driven shafts to cause them to haverocking movements in unison.
3. The combination with two movable elements, of a drive shaft and a driven shaft,
a rocker-arm fixed to the driven shafts and connected to one of said elements, a rockerarrn loose on the drive shaft and connected to the other of said elements, means for imparting rocking movements to said drive shaft, and means operable to connect the .drive shaft and its rocker-arm to cause one Y to rock with the other and to connect the drive and driven shafts to cause them to have reverse rocking movements in unison.
4. In an instrument of the class described, a pair of movable elements, a rocker-arm associated with and connected to each of said elements and manually controlled power Cl-I'HGll means operable to connect and impart simultaneous reverse rocking movements to said rocker-arms and to disconnect said arms to permit them to have free rocking movements.
