Be it known that I, CHARLES. H. lions, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, county of Dutchess, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Covered Receptacles,

of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to covered receptacles and has for its object to produce a normally closed receptacle having a simultaneously acting closure which can be easily opened by a substantially direct movement of the hand in reaching toward and into the same, the purpose being to produce a receptacle with a cover which is substantially non-interfering since it can be opened and the contents inserted or removed by a direct and almost involuntary one hand operation substantially the same as though the receptacle were not covered and automatically closes as the hand is removed, so that its opening action and closing action are simultaneous with the mere insertion and removal of the hand.

The Jfollowing is a descriptionof an embodiment of my invention7 reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows in perspective an open receptacle embodying my invention, the same being secured to the edge of a table;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, l is a container-body having a cover 2 hinged thereto so as to open when its forward edge is raised. In order that the cover may be raised by a direct movement of the hand as it enters the receptacle without requiring a voluntary opening movement in addition to the reaching movement, I have added to the cover an extension 3 which projects forward beyond the vcontainer-body and constitutes a hand rest in that it is adapted to rest on the back of a hand entering the boX. The hand rest 3 projects so as to extend over a considerable portion of the Specification of Letters Patent.

hand, say, one-half its width or more, and is preferably provided with a gradually rising under-surface l, which lies in the path of the hand of the user as it is in the act of moving horizontally toward the containerJ so as to enter the same. The under'- surface of the hand rest guides the hand and results in the openingand closingI actions of the cover. The extension 3 is adjacent to one end of the cover.

The boX shown in Figs. 1 to l is intended for use as a cigar workers boX for holding wrappers and as such is secured to the left hand end of a table 7 by suitable brackets 8, so that the hand rest 3 is slightly above the top of the table. In using this boX the operator sits at the front of the table with the boX to his left so that it can be reached by a slight forward reaching with his left hand, and when he desires to insert or remove something from the box by his left hand extends that hand toward the mouth of the boX with substantially the same movement that would be made if no cover were present or with a slightly and almost if not quite involuntary rise as the under-surface of the extension 3 is engaged by the baclrof the hand. As the hand in this movement engages the under side of the extension it causes the cover to rise out of the way of the hand so that the hand can easily enter the receptacle. Upon the withdrawal of the hand the cover falls to closed position. In lorder to provide means for raising the cover to amore nearly vertical position than would otherwise be attained witha given movement of the hand alone, I provide the end of the cover adjacent to the extension with a downward projection 9, which projection has a downwardly facing curved surface 10 which as the hand moves over the end of the boX engages the back of the hand or wrist so that the upward movement of the cover continues.

By the means described a boX is provided which can easily be opened by a single movement ofthe hand which is substantially the same as would be necessary to reach into the box were no cover present.

In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 my invention is embodied in a device which may be used to contain a cigar makers paste holder. In 'consists of a receptacle 11 preferably secured to the table by a screw and being provided at its upper end with a band 12 to which is hinged at 13 a cover 14.V This cover is provided with an extension 15 projecting beyond the receptacle and having an upwardly extending lower surface 16 on its projection portion. It also has a stop 17 which acts to prevent the cove-r from beingv raised beyond its dead center. Inl a device of this character the upwardly extending surface 16 preferably extends about two-thirds around the periphery of the cover so. thatv engagement can be made by a hand or linger moving toward the center of the receptacle from keither the .front of the receptacle or the sides thereof.

When this device isused `to hold a paste cup such. as 18 into which a cigar-maker ordinarily dips with .one linger, the linger is moved vtoward the paste cup Container with a substantially horizontal movement vuntil .it engages some portion of the curved surface 16. Thisengagement causes the cover l-l to vlift .with the result that the finger can b e moved `downward into the paste cup, the movements :beingsubstantially the same as would be necessary to dip into the paste cup if no cover were present. When` the linger is removed .the cover automatically closes.

The features above described result in producing a closed receptacle which keeps the contents moist if ldesired and protects them from dust and dirt and preserves them l in a sanitary condition and yet does not in terfere substantially vwith, the speed of an operator. or the movements which would. .be

necessary if the receptacle were not closed.

The cover, Ias it, rises, engages the edge of the flange27, so as to be stopped thereby. before it passes its dead center, with the result that it vcloses automatically wheneverI it is released andeannot lie-accidentally left open. 4vention is actually a time and labor saving device, since the cloth heretofore used to cover wrappers required two handsand severalmovements for the removal and replacement of the cloth and the extraction of a wrapper, thus calling for more time and labor thanis called for by the simple andl directreaching action necessary when my invention is used. It also saves material as it keeps the wrappers in better and more uniform condition than they can be kept in by a damp cloth.

As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope Aof the appended claims.

WhatfI claim is:

1. A closed receptacle havinga body portion and a cover hinged thereto, provided with an extension adapted to be engaged by the back of the hand when said cover is in closed position, and so shaped that a continued movement of the hand in a substan- Vthe user, when said cover is closed, so as to lift said cover and so shaped that a continued movement of the hand in a substantially horizontal plane will move the cover to open position.

Ina closedreceptacle, the combination of a container, a cover hinged thereto and normally tending to--moveto closed position, and an extension on said cover projecting beyond said container and when the cover is closed having an-under surface gradually receding upward from the container and adapted to be engaged by the hack of the hand of thev user.

7. In a closed receptacle the combination of a container, a cover hinged thereto and normally tending to move to closed position and an extension on said cover projecting beyond said container when the cover is closed, said projection having an under suriace adapted to be engaged by the back of the hand of the user and extending to a point adjacent to one end of the cover, and being so shaped on its engaging surface that a continuous movement of the hand in a substantially horizontal plane Will move the cover to open position.

8. In a closed receptacle the combination of a container, a cover hinged thereto and. normally tending to move to closed position. and an extension on said cover ,projecting beyond said container When the cover is closed, said projection having an under suriace'tadapted to be engaged by the back of the hand of the user7 said extension beginning substantially midway of the cover and extending to a point adjacent to one end of the cover and being so shaped on its engaging surface that a continued movement of the hand in a substantially horizontal plane will move the cover to open position.
