' llllllllll HHH||HII aftozmw TINTTED %TATF% PATENT UFFTQE HENRY E. PETTIS, 0F PROSSER, WASHINGTON.
DITCHING-PLOW.
Application filed October 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. PETTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prosser, in the county of Benton, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditching-Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is directed to improvements in ditching plows, particularly directed for use in connection with the culture of alfalfa, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the plow can be easily and quickly raised or lowered.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plow of this character so constructed that the plowing element thereof is yieldably supported, and can be lowered to its proper position when a person stands upon the plow frame, and will move to its inoperative position when the person steps from the plow frame.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 9. is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4- is a sectional View on line 4:-t of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation, showing the plow element in its raised position.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the tongue supporting the frame, which has its side bars 2 fixed to the axle 3, said side bars being held in spaced relation and have rising from their rear ends the side arms 4: of the yoke 5. Fixed to the arms 4. of the yoke 5 is a bracket 6 which is engaged with the rear end of the brace bar 7, said bar being connected to the bight of the yoke 5 and has its forward end fixed to the tongue 8.
Supported by the bight of the yoke 5 is a hook 9, the purpose of which will later apear.
The plow 10 has its beam 11 braced by the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1917.
Serial No. 54,185.
Fixed to the beam 11. by the same bolts which secure the plow beam in place is an upwardly and forwardly curved arm 1'? which has its forward end provided with a sleeve 18, said sleeve being engaged with the bolt 19. The bolt 19 is adjustably connected to the side bars 2 of the tongue frame whereby the plow can be adjustably connected to the tongue frame. Having its lower end connected to the arm 17 is a coil spring 20, the upper end of which is connected to the hook 9, said spring being of sufficient strength to hold the plow beam 11 elevated, but as soon as a person steps upon a plow element it is obvious that the same will be lowered and will remain engaged in the earth as long as a person remains thereon and will return to its inoperative position when the person steps off of the beam.
Pivotally connected to the bracket 6 is a latch 21 which is adapted to engage the brace arm attached to the arm 17 and beam 11, whereby the plow beam can be held in its raised position.
What I claim is:
1. An agricultural machine comprising a supporting frame, a yoke extending up-- 'wardly therefrom, a bracket projecting rearwardly from an intermediate portion of said yoke, a latch carried by said bracket, a plow beam supporting arm pivoted to said frame, a plow beam secured to said arm, a brace connection between said plow beam and said arm and adapted to engage said latch to retain said plow beam in raised position, and a spring connecting said arm with said yoke for normally holding said beam elevated.
2. An agricultural machine comprising a supporting frame, a yoke extending upwardly therefrom, a bracket projecting rearwardly from an intermediate portion of said yoke, a latch carried by said bracket, a plow beam supporting arm pivoted to said frame, a plow beam secured to said arm, a brace connection between said plow beam and said arm and adapted to engage said latch to retain said plow beam in raised position, a spring connecting said arm with .4. as A said yoke for normally holding said beam In testimony whereof, I affix my signaelevated, and a brace bar having one end ture, in the presence of two Witnesses. secured to said bracket and its other end to HENRY E. PETTIS. said frame, the intermediate portion of said WVitnesses:
5 bar being secured to the upper end of said Ewing/L. CAPPs,
yoke. v V ALLEN G. MCNEILL.
