Be it known that we, WARREN FU'HR- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Westfield, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, and EDWARD M. SQUAREY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Tuckahoe, county of Westchester, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Restoring Mechanism for Calculators, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide in a calculator including transfer mechanism, improved means for actuating the restoring member, whereby it will be moved to cause both the restoring and the transfer to take place during the return movement of a side bar or main actuating member of the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for actuating the restoring bar of a transfer mechanism from an actuating member that moves back and forth; and means for moving the adding pinions relative to the rack bars to engage and disengage the same, which latter means include a member that upon special operation of the machine to change the normal timing of the said engagement and disengagement of the pinions, will disable the connections for shifting the restoring bar.
In the accompanying drawings illustrat ing one embodiment of our invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation at the left side of the machine. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of similar parts on the right side of the machine. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with the'parts shown at the end of the advance stroke of the pitman. Fig. 4 is a partial plan View; Figs.5, 6, and Z show the parts on one side of the machine in different consecutive positions. Fig. 8 shows one of the latches; and Fig. 9 shows one of the pawls.
As shown in the drawings, 20 represents the side plate on the right side of an adding machine, and in Fig. 2 is shown a portion 21 of a similar side plate on the opposite,
side of the machine. These plates are provided with guiding means fora restoring bar 22 that extends across between the plates and beyond them, and is secured at its ends to links 23 and 24 that extend horizontally adjacent each side plate respectively. Slots 25 and 26 are shown in the two side plates through which the bar 22 extends and is guided therein to move back and forth. Suitable means are provided to move the arms 23 and 24 back and forth in unison, and the means shown are in duplicate, on each of the side lates. The link 23 is pivoted to an arm 27 that swings on a stud 28 on the side plate 20, which arm is hinged at 19 to one arm 30 of a bent lever, that swings on a stud 29 on this side plate. The depending arm 31 of the bent lever extends downwardly and carries a latch 32 pivoted thereon at stud 33. This latch has a lug portion 34, the front part of which is inclined, and beyond the lug the latch in its normal position rests on a stud 35, carried by an arm 36 secured to the pitman 37, on this side of the machine. This pitman is advanced and retracted by a crank 38 from an actuating shaft 39, in the operation of the machine. At the rear the pitman is shown as swung on a crank 40 on a shaft 41. A spring 42 between the latch and its lever presses the latch against the ,pin 35.
When the pitman 37 moves forward from the position shown in Fig. 1, to that shown in Fig. 3, the pin 35 Will strike the inclined face of the lug and swing the latch upward, until it passes the lug 34, when the latch 'will fall and the lug engage the pin, as indicated in Fig. 5.
On the opposite side of the machine, (see Fig. 2) the link 24 is hinged to an arm 43 that swings on a stud 44 on the side plate 21.. This arm is pivoted to a bent lever comprising arms 45 and 46, that swings on a stud 47. A latch 48 is pivoted on the arm 46, and pressed downward by a spring 49 against a stud 50 on a strip 51, fast on a pitman 52. This pitman, by means not shown, is swung from the shafts 39 and 41 to move back and forth in unison with the pitman 37. The latch 48 has a lug 53 in clined at its forward end, and which will engage the stud 50 when the pitman 52 moves forward the full distance similar to the position of the latch and stud shown in Fig. 5. It is to be understood that the parts shown in Fig. 2 are substantial duplicates of corresponding parts shown in Fig. 1.
As set forth, the forward movement of the two pitmen will cause the latches to swing upward and permit the studs carried by the pitmen to engage the lugs-on the latches.' (See Fig. 3). When the pitmen begin the return stroke, each stud will engage its latch to draw it rearward, and the latch will move its supporting arm to swing each bent lever. This will cause the horizontal arm of each bent lever to swing upward, that will rock the arms 27 and 43 upward, and serve to straighten the to gle joints formed by these arms with the links 23 and 24. This will cause the two links to move forward in, unison, that will shift the restoring bar 22 forward in the slots in the side plates as indicated in Fig. 6, in which position vthe pitmen have advanced a suflicient distance to operate the parts as shown. This is effected at the initial part of the return stroke of the pitman.
The purpose of the restoring bar is to control carrying segments 54, that coiiperate with the adding pinions 55. These pmions are shifted back and forth-between a position engaging the segments 54 as shown in Fig. 1, and a position engagin the rack bars 56, as shown in Figs. 37, y suitable means not herein shown. In the normal operation of adding, the pinions remain forward engaging the segments during the forward stroke ofthe pitman, and at the end of such stroke the pinions are shifted free of the segments and engage the rack bars. The pinions remain in such position until the latter portion of the return stroke, when they are brought forward to again engage the carrying segments. Therefore the carrying operation of the segments is effected at this latter part of the returnstroke, when thepinions are again brought to engage the segments, and this is usually done by a spring 57 on each segment, by reason of the restoring bar moving rearward at this time to permit such spring to swing the segments. Those segments that have been tripped to carry, remain in this position at the end of an operation, and such segments are returned to a latched position when the restoring bar is moved forward at the initial. part of the return stroke of the pitmen. It is customaryin this art, when the seg ments are restored, that they are engaged by a suitable latch or pawl, that is tripped when the pinion passes 9 to carry.
Therefore the restorin bar must be shifted to the position of Flg. 6 at the initial part of the return stroke of the pitmen. But since the pitmen continue their return stroke, the latches must be disconnected therefrom; and furthermore the restoring bar must be held in this position until the final portion of theret-urn stroke and then released. Upon the, latches being released from. the pitmen studs, springs 58 and 59 connected with the links 23 and '24 respectively, will retract the restoring bar and the connected parts at each side from the position of Fig. 6 to that of Fig. 1, when the parts are free to-move. When the pitman advances the parts to shift the restoring bar the required distance, each latch is swung to release its bent lever from the pitmen. Pins 60 and 61 on the two side plates are engaged by arms 62 and 63 on the latches at this stage, whereby latches areswung, upward to move their lugs away from the pins 35 and 50 carried by the pitmen. This freeing of the parts would permit the springs 58 and 59 to retract the links and restoring bar, so that suitable re straining means must be employed to prevent such movementat this time. The arm 31 at this stage is engaged by a shoulder 64 on a pawl 65 pivoted at 66, and ressed upward against the end of the arm y a spring 67; (see Fig. 6). On the other side, the arm 46 engages a shoulder 68 on a pawl 69 pivoted at 70 on side plate 21, the pawl being pressed upward by a spring 71. These pawls will engage the arms just previous to the release of the latches from the pitmen studs, and hence hold the parts with the restoring bar in the forward position. At the latter part of the return stroke of the pitmen, the pawls are shifted to release the arms 31 and 46 and permitthe springs 58 and 59 to retract the restoring bar and connected parts. A pin 72 carried by pitman 37, at this stage will strike an arm 73 of the pawl 65, and shift the pawl to release the arm 31. On the opposite side a pin 74.
on the pitman 52, will strike an arm 75 on thepawl 69, to shiftthis awl and release the arm 46', simultaneous with the release of the arm 31 from pawl 65. This will permit the return of the restoring bar and connected parts to former position as shown in Fig. 1. 'It will be understood that as soon as each pitman starts forward the pawls will be released from the pins on the pitmen to cooperate with the arms, as set forth.
It is also desirable to permit the restoring bar when moved forward the full distance by the latches, to be held in a forward pos tion for an instant, and then to be retracted a very slight distance, to be held in such retracted position until the release at the final part of the return stroke. The pawl 65 is rovided with a second shoulder 76 a short istance back of the shoulder 64; and the pawl 69 has a second shoulder 77 adjacent the shoulder 68 thereon. Upon release of the latches from their studs, a very slight retraction of the pitman will bring cams 78 and 7 90m the pawl arms 73 and 75 to engage the pins 72 and 74 respectively, whereby each pawl is given a-short swing just suflicient to cause the arms 31 and 46 to be released by the shoulders 64 and 68, and to engage the shoulders 7 6 and 7 7 (see Fig. 7). It will be understood that these shoulders. are a short distance offset, that will permit the slight retraction of the arms and hence of the restoring bar.
In machines of=this character, special operations are effected, that are brought about by depression of special keys, that change the timing of the engagement of the pinions with the rack bars and the segments. During such special operations no carrying is effected, and hence the restoring bar should not be shifted. We provide means whereby during the depression of any of these special keys the mechanism for shifting the restor ing bar is disabled. In Figs. 1 and 3 are shown special keys and 81, that when either is depressed, will engage the lever 82 and depress the lever and hold it depressed until the keys are restored. This lever is fast to a shaft 83 and will raise an arm 84:
that is arranged to engage a pin 85 on the latch 33. This movement is sufficient to hold the latch with its lug out of position for engagement with the stud 35 on the pitman. Therefore the latch will not be engaged by the advance of the pitman. The shaft 83 extends across the machine and carries an arm 86 that serves to elevate a strip 87, (see Fig. 2). The latter will engage a pin 88 on the latch 48, so that this latch will be raised at the same time that the latch 32 is raised. Thus the depression of either key will raise both latches and prevent any move ment of the restoring bar by the pitmen, until the key is restored. Means are shown in Fig. 1 for retaining the keys 80 and 81 de pressed when they are operated until the return stroke of the pitman 37 A bar 2 is suitably guided to reciprocate and has inclined slots 3 and 4 that engage pins 5 and 6 on the keys 80 and 81 respectively. When either key is depressed the pin will engage the wall of the slot and move the bar 2 rearward to further tension its retracting spring 7. The bar 2 is locked in its rearward position by a latch 8 that engages a notch 9 in the bar. The latch 8 carries a pawl 10 that will be engaged by a pin 11 on the pitman 37 at the latter portion of its return stroke, whereby the latch will be swung to release the bar 2 and permit the keys 80 and 81 to be retracted by their springs 13 and 14. On the forward stroke the pawl 10 will swing and not shift the latch.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. The combination of a restoring bar, a swinging lever, connections between the bar and lever, means to retract the bar and lever, a pitman, connections between the pit man and said lever comprising a latch pivoted on one of these members and a stop on the other member arranged to be engaged by the latch, the stop and latch being arranged I whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop whereby to swing the lever and shift the restoring bar, means arranged to engage the latch after its initial movement of the restoring bar, whereby the latch is released from the said stop, means arranged to engage said lever when advanced by said means whereby to hold the lever and restoring bar in advanced position on release of the latch from the said stop, said means at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman being caused to release said lever and permit full retraction of the lever and restoring bar.
2. The combination of a restoring bar, a swinging lever, connections between the bar and lever, means to retract the bar and lever, a pitman, connections between the pitman and said lever comprising a latch pivoted on one of these members and a stop on the other member arranged to be engaged by the latch, the stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop whereby to swing the lever and shift the restoring bar, means arranged to engage the latch after its initial movement of the restoring bar, whereby the latch is released from the said stop, means arranged to engage said lever when advanced by said means whereby to hold the lever and restoring bar in advanced position on release of the latch from the said stop, said means at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman being caused to release said lever and permit full retraction of the lever and restoring bar, special keys on the machine, and means for causing the operation of said keys to shift the latch out of rangeof the said stop.
3. The combination of a restoringbar, a swinging lever, connections between the bar and lever, means to retract the bar and lever, a pitman, connections between the pitman and said lever comprising a latch pivoted on one of these members and a sto on the other member arranged to be engaged by the latch, the stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop whereby to swing the lever and shift the restoring the return stroke of the pitman being caused to release said lever and permit full retraction of the lever and restoring bar, special and lever, means to retract the bar and said lever, a pitman, connections between the pitman and lever comprising a latch pivoted on one of these members and a stop on the other member arranged to be engaged by the latch, the, stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever,-
but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop whereby to swing the lever and shift. the restoring bar, means arranged to engage the latch after its movement by the restoring bar whereby the latch is released from-the pitman stop, means arranged to engage said lever when advanced by said means whereby to hold the lever'and restoring bar in ad-- vanced position on release of the latch from the said stop, said means being arranged to shift after a short dwell of the lever whereby to hold the lever with the restoring bar retracted a short distance, and said means at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman being caused to release said lever and permit full retraction of the lever and restoring bar.
5. In a calculating machine, the combination with adding mechanism including a series of counters, of a restoring bar extending across the machine to cooperate with all of the counters, and a pitman on each side of the machine, of a lever swinging on each side plate, connections between each said lever and the bar, means on each side plate to retract the bar and lever, connections between each pitman and adjacent lever comprising a latch pivoted on one of these members and a stop on the other member arranged to be engaged by the latch, each stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop whereby to swing the levers and shift the restoring bar, means arranged to engage each latch after its movement by the restoring bar whereby each latch is swung to be released by its said stop, means arranged to engage each lever upon the lever being advanced by the latch to hold the lever in advanced position onv said release of the latch from the stop, said means at the final part of the return stroke of the pltman belng caused to release said a stop on the other member arranged to be engaged by the latch, each stop and latch belng arranged whereby on the advance ofthe pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke .of a

ing bar whereby each latch is swung to be released by its said stop, means arranged to engage each lever upon the lever being ad vanced by the latch to hold the lever in ad vanced position on said release of the latch from the stop, said means at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman being caused to release said levers and permit retraction of the restoring bar, special keys on the machine, means for holding the keys down when depressed until the latter part of the return stroke of the pitman, and means for causing the depressed keys to hold each said latch out of range of engagement with its said stop.
7. The combination of a restoring bar, a
swinging lever, connections between. the bar and-lever, means to retract the bar and lever, a pitman, connections between the pitman and said lever comprising a latch pivoted on one of these members and a stopon the other member arranged to be engaged by the latch, the stop and, latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop whereby to swing the lever and shift the restoring bar, a pawlhaving a shoulder arranged to engage said lever when advanced by said means whereby to hold the lever and restoring bar in advanced position on release of the latch from the stop, a second shoulder on the pawl, means on the pitman to shift the pawl after a short dwell of the lever on the first shoulder to permit the second shoulder to engage the lever whereby to hold the lever with the restoring bar retracted a short ftss distance by said means, and means on the 8. a stop on the pitman arranged to engage said latch, the stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shifty'without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the g latch will be engaged by the stop to swing the lever and shift the restoring bar, a fixed pin arranged to engage the latch after its initial movement by the pitman whereby the latch is swung on its lever to be released from the pitman stop, means arranged to engage said lever upon the lever being advanced by the latch to hold the lever in advanced position on said release of the latch from the pitman, and means to swing said 2 pawl at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman to release said lever and permit retraction of the lever and restoring bar by said means.
9. The combination of a restoring bar, an arm arranged to swing on a fixed pivot, a link'connecting the arm with said bar, a swinging lever pivoted to said arm, means to retract the bar and lever, a latch pivoted on said lever, a pitman, a stop on the pit- 39 man arranged to engage said latch, the stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop to swing the lever and shift the restoring bar, a fixed pin arranged to engage the latch after its initial movement by the pitman whereby the latch is swung on its lever 'to be released from the 43 pitman stop, means arranged to engage said lever upon the lever being advanced by the latch to hold the lever in advanced position on said release of the latch from the pitman, and means to swing said means at the 45 final part of the return stroke of the pitman to release said lever and permit. retraction of the lever and restoring bar by said means. 10. The combination of'a restoring bar, a swinging lever, connections between the 53 bar and lever, means to retract the bar and lever, a latch pivotedon said lever, a pitman, a stop on the pitman arranged to engage said latch, the stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the es pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop to swing the lever and shift the restoring bar, a fixed pin arranged to engage the latch as after its initial movement by the pitman whereby the latch is swung on its lever to be released from the pitman stop, a pawl arranged to engage said lever upon the lever being advanced by the latch to hold the lever in advanced position on said release of the latch from the pitman, means to swing said pawl at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman to release said lever and permit retraction of the lever and restoring bar by said means, special keys on the machine, and means for causing the operation of said keys to shift the latch out of range of the said stop. v
11. In a calculating machine, the combination with adding mechanism including a se ries of counters, a restoring bar extending across the machine to cooperate with all of the counters, and a pitman on each side plate of the machine, of a lever swinging on each side plate, connections between each said lever and the bar, means on each side plate to retract the bar and lever, a latch pivoted on each said lever, a stop on each pitman arranged to engage with the adjacent latch, each stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the stop whereby to swing the levers and shift 0 the restoring bar, a fixed pin on each side plate arranged to engage the adjacent latch after its initial movement by the pitman whereby each latch is swung on its lever to be released its pitman stop, a pawl on each side plate arranged to engage the adjacent lever upon the lever being advanced by the latch and to hold the lever in advanced position on said release of the latch from the pitman, and means to swing each said pawl on the final part of the return stroke of the pitman to release said levers and permit retraction of the restoring bar by said means.
12. In a calculating machine, the combination with adding mechanism including a series of counters, a restoring bar extending across the machine to cooperate with all of the counters, and a pitman on each side plate of the machine, of a lever swinging on each side plate, connections between each said lever and the bar, means on each side plate to retract the bar and lever, a latch pivoted on each said lever, a stop on each pitman arranged to engage with the 5 adjacent latch, each stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever, but on the return stroke of the pitman the latch will be engaged by the 12 stop whereby to swing the levers and shift the restoring bar, a fixed pin on each side plate arranged to engage the adjacent latch after its initial movement by the pitman whereby each latch is swung on its lever 25 to be released by its pitman stop, a pawl on each side plate arranged to engage the adjacent lever upon the lever being advanced by the latch and to hold the lever in ad vanced position on said release of the latch 13o from the pitman, and means to swing each said pawl on the final part of the return stroke of the pitman to release said levers and permit retraction of the restoring bar by said means, special keys on the machine, means for holding the keys down when depressed until the latter part of the return stroke of the pitman, and means for causing the depressed keys to hold each said latch out of range of engagement with its said stop. 13. The combination of a restoring bar, a swinging lever, connections between the bar and lever, means to retract the bar and lever, a latch pivoted on said lever, a pitman, a stop on the pitman arranged to engage said latch, the stop and latch being arranged whereby on the advance of the pitman the latch will shift without moving the lever but on the return stroke of the pit man the'latch will be engaged by the stop to swing the lever and shift the restoring bar, a fixed pin arranged to engage the latch after its initial movement by the pitman whereby the latch is swung on its lever to be released from the pitman stop, a pawl having a shoulder arranged to engage said lever when advanced by said means whereby to hold the lever and restoring bar in advanced position on release of the latch from the pitman, a secondv shoulder on the pawl, means on the pitman to shift the pawl after a short dwell of the lever on the firstshoulder to permit the sedond shoulder to engage the lever whereby to hold the lever with the restoring bar retracted a short distance by said means, and means on the pitman to swing the pawl at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman to release said lever and permit full retraction of the lever and restoring bar by said means.
14. In a calculator, the combination with adding mechanism including" a series of counters, a restoring bar extending across the machine to cooperate with all of the counters and a itman on each side of the machine, of shi ting means for the bar on each side plate of the machine, restoring means for each said shifting means and the bar, connections on each side plate between the pitman and a member of the shifting means comprising a latch pivoted on one of these members and a stop on the other member that is engaged by the latch, the stop and latch being arranged whereby on advance of. the pitman each latch will swing without moving its shifting means and the bar but on return stroke of the pitman, each stop and latch will engage whereby to shift the restoring bar, means arranged to engage each latch after its movement by the restoring bar whereby the latch is swung to be released from its stop for retractlon, means on each side arranged to engage and hold each shifting means and the restoring bar in advanced position after sli ht retraction on said release of each late and stop, said holding means at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman being caused to release said shifting means to permit full retraction of the shifting means and restoring bar.
17. In a calculator, a combination of a restoring bar, shifting means for the bar, retracting means for the bar and shifting means, a pitman, connections between the pitman and a member of the shifting means comprising latch pivoted on one of these members and a stop on the other member engaged by the latch, the stop and latch being arranged whereby on advance of the pitman the latch will swing without moving the shifting means and bar but on the return stroke of the pitman the stop and latch will engage whereby to shift the restoring bar, means arranged to engage the latch after its initial movement by the restoring bar whereby the latch is moved to release said stop, means arranged to engage and hold the shifting means and restoring bar in advanced position on said release of the latch and stop, said holding means at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman being caused to release said'shifting means to permit full retraction of the shifting means and restoring bar.

In a calculator, the combination with adding mechanism including a series of counters, a restoring bar extending across the machine to cooperate with all of the counters and a itman on each side of the machine, of shi ing means for the bar on each side plate of the machine, restoring means for each said shiftin means and the bar, connections on each si e plate between the pitman and a member of the shifting means comprising a latch pivoted on one of these members and a stop on the other member that is engaged by the latch, the sto and latch being arranged whereby on a vance of the pitman each latch will swing without moving its shifting means and the bar but on return stroke of the pitman, each stop and latch will engage whereby to shift the restoring bar, means arranged to engage each latch after its movement by the restorin bar whereby the latch is swung to be re eased from its stop for retraction, means on each side arranged to engage and hold each shifting means and the restorin bar in advanced position on said release 0 each latch and stop, said holding means at the final part of the return stroke of the pitman being caused to release said shifting means to permit full retraction of the shifting means and restoring bar.
