Description
UNITE@ @TATFS FAFNT FFIGF.
IRA B. LESH, OFPI-IILADELPI-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 THE RAILWAY MATERIALS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION' 0F ILLINOIS.
BRAKE-SHOE BACK.
Original application led August 25, 1916, Serial No. 116,871.
Specification of Letters Patent.
9, 1917. Serial No. 147,518.
To all 'whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, IRA B. LEsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the coimty of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve-ments in Brake- Shoe Backs, of which the following is a specification.
|This is a division of my application Serial No. 116,871, filed August 25, 1916.
The invention relates to brake shoes and more particularly to an improved back therefor and its object is to provide a strong and substantial back of rolled steel having a rigid attaching lug and adapted to be located at or adjacent to the back of the shoe for reinforcing and strengthening the shoe and to hold the parts of the body of the shoe together in ease of fracture.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a brake shoe embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the shoe;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the remforcing back and integral attaching lug;
Fig. l is a similar view showing the-attaching lug spot-welded to the plate before or after the plate is cut and bent;
Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional views on the lines 5 5 and 6-6 of Fig. 2, respectively.
My invention can be embodied in ear shoes, driver shoes, common cast iron, oo mposite and composition shoes of all descriptions but for simplicity I have shown it in the drawings embodied in a shoe having a common cast iron body 12 provided with the usual end lugs 13 and guide lugs 14.
The back comprises a rolled steel plate curved to conform to the usual curvature of the shoe body and preferably of less width and of less length than the shoe body so that it may be embedded within said body, at or adjacent to the back thereof, during the operation of casting the body on the back. The ends of the plate may be upturned as at 16 to be embedded in the end lugs of the shoe. The attaching lug 17 is made of suitable size and configuration with a key opening 18 and is rigid with the plate, being preferably made integral therewith, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5. However, the attaching lug may be made separate from the plate and spot-welded thereto, as shown at 19 in Fig. e, which, for all practical purposes, makes it the same as an integral part of the plate. Any suitable means may be employed for securing a rigid connection between the back and the body of the shoe and for this purpose the bach may be provided with openings 20 to permit the body metal to flow up therethrough and form keys for locking the back and body together.
The attaching lug is preferably made of a size and shape to conform to the requirements of the Master Car Builders specifications and, being preferably made of steel integral with the plate it constitutes a strong and substantial solid lug which will not be broken in handling or in actual service. The attaching lug is preferably of the proper height, length and width to it in a brake head in accordance with the usual requirements of railway service and it has sloping end faces 21, parallel side faces 22 and a plane top face 23 and the keyway is located as usual to register with the leyway in the brake head and receive the locking key.
I claim:
1. A back for a brake shoe consisting of a relatively thin rolled steel plate having a solid steel attaching lug rigid therewith and of a size and shape to fit a brake head and having a key opening therein.
2. A back for a brake shoe consisting of a relatively thin rolled steel plate having a solid homogeneous integral attaching lug thereon provided with a key opening.
3. A back for a brake shoe consisting of a relatively thin rolled steel plate having a solid steel attaching lug rigid therewith and provided with sloping end faces, and a key opening extending through said faces.
A back foi` a brake shoe consisting of a relatively thin rolled steel plate having a solid steel attaching lug rigid therewith and provided with a plane top face and slopfaees and sloping end faces, and a key open lng end faces, and :L key opening extending 111g extending through said end faces. through said end faces.
5. A back `for a brake shoe consisting of IRA B LESH' 5 a relatively thin rolled steel plate having a `Wiinessesz solid steel attaching lug rigid therewith and A. D. CLAREY,
provided with a plane top face, parallel side FRANK BILLINSKI.
