To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM C. NoRcRoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, county of Vigo, and State of lndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leveling Drawing- Tables for Combination Jolt-Rammingand Rock-Over Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to leveling. drawing tables for combination jolt-ramming and rockover machines.
The present application is a division of Serial No. 109698, filed July 17, 1916.
Machines of the general class to which my invention belongs embody an automatic jolt-- ramming machine, a drawing cylinder having a table to support the mold as it is lowered away from. the pattern, rock-over means being used to tilt therammed flask, mold, )atternand, attachments to a position where the mold may be lowered away from the pattern. i
In this class of machine, as previously known to the art, difficultyhas been experienced in providing a suitably level and firm bearing or support for the mold while it is being drawn from the flask and pattern for, unless supported perfectly level, there will be a tendency to distort the mold as it will not draw clear from the pattern without. relative lateral movement.
The present invention provides an improved three-point-bearing leveling table or attachment for the drawing cylinder which is adapted to automatically adjust itself, on elevation of the piston of the drawing cylinder, by its contact with the bottom board or the battens thereof, after the rammed mold has been rocked over and may then be securely fastened in its set or adjusted position so that when the drawing table is lowered, the mold will draw or lower away from the pattern in a clean cut and accurate man ner and all tendency to distortion is prevented.
I am aware that the present improved three-point leveling table may be provided in a rock-over machine which does not onploy the improved lever arrangement of my application Serial No. 109698; further, that it may be used as a drawing device in connection with a molding machine of any class and is not restricted to combination joltramming and rock-over machines nor to any particular molding machine.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the present improvements in connection with. the machine of my application Serial No. 109698 to illustrate its use and operation, certain parts being in section and broken away, dotted lines representing the rockedover position of the rock-over table and the elevated position of the drawing, automatically leveling table;
Fig. 2, a plan View; and
Fig. 3, a detail end elevation, broken away and in section, of the leveling drawing table.
There is a base 1 common to the jolt-1ammin machine 2 and mold drawing device ST.
The jolt-ramming machine 2 may be of ihe kind set forth in my Patent No. 1,031,084, dated July 2, 1912, or, like the machine ol my Patent No. 1,194,059, dated Aug. 8, 1,010,
the latter being shown. The invention may be used in connection with other n'lolding machines.
The jolting table 17, rock-over table 21 resting thereon, brackets or arms 22 of table 21, brackets or arms 20, pivot 22, levers 27 pivoted to the bed at their lower ends and having slots 27 receiving the studs 23, and the cushioning cylinders 29, pivoted to the .bed at 28 and whose piston rods are pivoted to the levers 25 at 32, are as set forth in my application Serial No. 109698, filed July 17, 1916 and operate as therein set forth.
The drawing cylinder 37 and piston 88 operating therein may be of any preferred form and operated and controlled as desired.
The table 39, which is carried by the pisston 38, has a depending flange or apron 40 provided with a relatively large hole or opening 41. Integral with, or rigidly secured to, the table 39 is an upwardly extending stud or pin 42 having a coned tip 43.
A supplemental table or three-point leveling device 44, of general Y-shape, disposed above table 39 has a socket 45 provided with a coned countersink 46. The socket 45 is of. considerably greater diameter than the pin 42 and the countersink 46 is larger than coned tip 43. The pivot central bearing thus provided for the leveling device 44 supports it above drawing table 39 with an adaptability for tilting in any direction so that it may automatioally adjust itself to the bottom board, or battens thereon, which hold the inverted flask and'mold in the dotted line position, after being rocked over, when the piston 88 is elevated.
Secured to two of the arms 47 of the Y- shaped leveling device 44 by bolts 48, is a depending yoke 49 which carries a bolt extending through the large opening 41 in apron 40. A large washer 51 on the bolt lies between the head of the bolt 50 and apron 40 and is adapted to bear against the latter; a nut and washer on the bolt bear against the outer face of the yoke 49. Adjustment of the bolts 48 if necessary, or merely loosening bolt 50 will permit any desired upward or downward tilting of the forked end of the Y-shaped leveling device 44, the play of the bolt 50 in hole 41 allowing such tilting. Tilting of the leveling device 44 at right-angles to the foregoing described movement, requires no adjustment of the bolts 48 but is allowed by the lateral play of bolt 50 in hole 41. The leveling. device 44, freed for tilting, will automatically conform itself to the level of the bottom board or battens thereon when it is run up by elevating the piston 38. Bolt 50 is then tightened (also bolts 48, if necessary) and the bottom or follow board may be released, allowing the mold to be drawn from the pattern without danger of distorting the mold.
The pattern board, pattern and flask are placed on the rock-over table 21 and filled with sand. The mold having been joltrammed to a sufficient degree to bring the sand to the desired density, a follow or bottom board is placed on top the rammed mold and the parts clamped to table 21. The exhaust valve of the machine 2 is then closed and air pressure admitted carrying u ward the tables 17, 21, and flask, mold an pattern.
Having rocked the table over, the piston 38 is run up to cause the leveling device 44 to adjust itself to the bottom board of the I mold and said leveling device is then fastened in adjusted position. The follow or bottom board is then unclamped and the mold lowered away by allowing the piston to descend.
A reversal of the above operations returns the rock-over table 21 to normal position on the jolt-table 1'7.
Having thusv described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a molding machine, a centrally supported unitary leveling drawing table, and manually operable locking means for fastening it where set. I
2. In a molding machine, a centrally supported unitary leveling drawing table having a three-point support for the mold, and manually operable locking means for securing it where set.
3. In a molding machine, a unitary leveling drawing table pivotally and tiltably supported at its center, and a yoke and fastening device for securing it where set.
4. In a molding machine, a unitary pivotally and tiltably supported leveling table, a setting yoke therefor, and a fastener for securing the yoke.
5. In a molding machine, a drawing table, a pivotally and tiltably supported leveling device thereon, a yoke secured to and depending from the leveling device, and a fastening bolt for securing the yoke to the drawing table.
6. In a rock-over molding machine, the combination with a rock-over table, of a unitary leveling drawing table tiltably supported solely at its central portion, and manualh operable lockingmeans for fastening it where set, said table being adaptedfor lowering the mold away from the inverted rockover table.
7. In a rook-over molding machine, the combination with a rock-over table, of a centrally supported unitary drawing table having a three-point support for the mold, and manually operable locking means for fastening it where set, said table being adapted for lowering the mold away from the inverted rock-over table.
