ANDREA GABRIELE MICHELE PAN SA, OF BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND.
PISTOL-RAYON ET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1917.
Application led May 3, 1917. Serial No. 166,171.
To all whomz't may concer/n.'
Be it known that I, ANDREA GABRIELE MICHELE PANsA, a native of Italy, residing at Bristol, in the county of Bristol and State ,of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in PistoLBayonets, of which the following is a specification.
In the construction and use of a pistol or other small firearm having a bayonet, it is desirable and necessary that the bayonet may be easily and quickly thrown into either its operative or inoperative positions and securely locked in either position. It is also desirable that when the bayonet is in its operative position it should be in the best possible position for use and when not in use it should be held in the most out of the way position possible, without removing` the same from the pist-ol, so that the bayonet may be brought quickly into use when required. It should also be so placed as-not to interfere in any way with the operation of firing the pistol, when the bayonet is in either position.
The object of my invention is to provide a pistol or other small ire-arm with a bayonet having all of the above desirable features and in which all undesirable features are entirely eliminated.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction 01"' a pistol bayonet adaptable for use -on all kinds of small lire-arms, said pistol bayonet having details of construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side view of a pistol in the form of a revolver provided with my improved pistol bayonet and showing the bayonet in the Vopen position for use in full lines and the inoperative or closed position in broken lines.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the handle portion and showing the construction of the bayonet, and
F ig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 3, 3 of Fig. 1 through the pistol barrel and bayonet guard and showing the means of locking the bayonet in the closed position. i. v
In the -drawing 5 indicates a conventional form of a pistol and 6 my improved pistol bayonet. The pistol has the usual handle 7 and barrel 8. My improved pistol bayonet 6 consists of a hand member 9 shaped to conform to the hand and to go over the handle 7 of the pistol as shown. Itis secured to the handle ofthe pistol in any well known way or may form a part of the handle. A blade 10 forming, the bayonet proper is constructed to have a pointed end 11, a notch 12 in the side adjacent the pointed end, a
edge adjacent the butt end and pivotally secured off center by a pin 15 in a slot 16 to the butt end of the hand member 9. The slot 16 opens outward and at its inner end and has a flat bottom 17 abutting against the square butt end 13 of the blade 10, when the blade is in its open position, as shown in Fig. 2. `A locking lever 18. held in its normal position under spring tension, as shown, is pivotally secured by a pin 19 to and in the hand member 9 and has a beveled catch or locking` end 20 which enters the notch 14 to lock the blade in its open position and an operating or thumb end 21 which extends out of the top portion of the hand member 9 in a convenient position for operation. A bifurcated guard 22 is secured to the underside of the muzzle end of the barrel 8 into which the pointed end 11 of the blade is held, when closed by a catch lever 23, held in its normal position under spring tension, as shown, and having an'inner beveled catch or locking end 24, which enters the notch 12 in the blade 10 and holds the end of the blade in the guard, when the blade is in the closed position, and an outer releasing end 25 which extends through a slot in the side of the guard, as shown in Fig. 3.
lVhen it is desired or necessary to use the bayonet the end 25 of the catch 23 is pressed inward thereby releasing the bayonet which drops downward into its open position, as sh-own in full lines in Fig. 1. The locking end 2O of the locking lever 18 now snaps into the notch 14 and with the bottom 17 of the slot 16 rmly holds the bayonet in the open position. `With the position of the hand in grasping the handle of the pistol for liring the bayonet is now in the best possible position for use. When not in use the bayonet is closed by pressing the thumb on the thumb end 21-of the locking lever 18 thereby unlocking the bayonet by releasing the locking end 20 from the notch 14 in the bayonet, the end of which is then swung into the guard 22 and locked in the guard by the locking end 24 of the spring catch 23 snapping into the notch 12 in the bayonet.
By this construction the bayonet may be Y square butt end vv13, a notch 14 in the outer quickly opened for use. It is in the bestV strongly and rigidly held in the open posi-l tion When in use and it can bc modified for use on any kind of a small ire-arm.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new: l
1.,In a pistol bayonet, a pistol having a barrel and a handle, a bayonet having a pointed end and a butt end, a guard on the pistol barrel, means for pivotally securing the butt end of the bayonet to the end of the pistol handle, means for locking the bayonet in the open position and means for detachably securing the pointed end of the Vbayonet in the guard, in the closed position.
