GHAZY, NEW YORK.
DRAFT-RIGG'IING FOR RAILWAY 'CARSV Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June'zo', 1917.
Application filed November 30, 1914. Serial No. 874,690.
To all whom it may concern:
lie, it known that I, JUIIN F. OCosxon, a eitizen'of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, ha ve invented a eertainnew and useful 'IiuproyeIm-nt in Draft-Rigging for lhiil\\'ay-(ars, of which the following full, eleur, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a, part of this specification,
This invention relates to improvements in draft rig ings for railway ears.
.-\noh,|eet of the invention is to provide a draft rigging for railway earswhieh consists of few parts of simple eonstruetion, and one which a voids the neeessity of stop castings but an'mits of-theuse of slidable keys.
In the drawing forming a part of this speritieation, Figure l is a part side elevatloll, Part vertiral sectional View of a draft rigging embodying my improvements and Fig. 2 is a horizontal seetioual view taken substantially on the line -2 of Fig. 1 but showing the gear under fullbuft and Figs. 1 and 'lare xeriieal sectional views taken substantially on the lines I--3 and 4-4 respertively of Fig.1.
In said drawing, l()l() denote the renter sills or other draft members adapted to receive the sllm'lt of the draft riggin said sills. as shown. being Oilt'll provided with elongated slots 11 and 12. The draw bal' is designated by the reference 13, the same being provided with the usual upper and lower front shoulders H with whieh are adapted to roiiperate intu'rned shoulders or gills 15 formed on the inner sides ol the front ends of the arms ll) of the yoke, 17, the. arms H5 being united by the. rear portion 18, said yoke being also provided with a rear liller or abutment it), The front ends'of the arms Hi -.----l!i are also provided with side \\'i|igs or walls which overlap the sides of the draw barbutt and serve to strengthen tlu-shoulders 15.
Within the yoke are mounted a front follower zllarear follower 22 and nested springs 23 intermediate. said followers. Each of the is a.
followers 21 and 22 is transversely slotted and reeeives therethrough a key 2+, said keys being slidable in the slots 11 and 12 in the center sills. The front key 24 also passes through slots 25 in the side walls of a rectangular band or hood 26 which surrounds the yoke, front follower 21 and a portion of the draw bar butt. As will be apparent, the hood or band 26 moves with the front key 24. a.
Secured to the inner sides of the sills lib-10 and intermediate the slots 11 and 12, are spring guide plates 27 each of which is preferably in the form of a plate bent to have vertical-flanges 28 adapted to be seecured to the sills by rivets 29, horizontall extending portions 30 and inner vertical wa l 31. Thesemembers27 are so arranged that theyguide the springs, preventbuckling thereof and alsoserve to maintain the gear in central position, this latter result being accomplished beeause of the fact that the inner coil of the nested springs is mounted on bosses 32 formed on the inner sides of the front and rear followers.
The operation of the deviee is as follows: lnder butt, the rear ke '24 is held station ary and eonsequently t 1e rear follower 22.
Upon inward movement of the draw bar,
the front follower 21, front kev 2i and hood or band :26 are moved inwan ly, thus compressing the springs against the rear follower 2'3, the inward movement. being liinited by the engagement ofthe front key 24 with the rear ends of the slots 12. Under draft, the, front followe' and hood 26 are held st'ationanv by the front key :54 and the rear follower is pulled forwardly by the yoke, the latter being pulled by the draw bar on account of the interengaging shoulders H and 14.
I claim:-
1. In a draft the combination with draft sills of a draw bar, a yoke, the draw ba-r andyoke having cooperating shoulders, at front. tollowena.
rear follower, a eushioning device between said followers, keys supporting said'followers, said keys being mounted in elongated rigging for railway cars,
slots in said sills, and a hood surrounding said yoke and the draw I'm-1' butt and movable with one of said keys.
- 2. In a, draft riggin for railway cars,
' the combination with t e draft sills, of a the draw bar and yoke draw bar, a yoke,
having cooperating shoulders, a hood en-
