BELT-BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented@ une 26, 191'?.
Application filed August 9, 1916. Serial No. 114,023.
'grip at the belt to hold the same adjusted upon the buckle. y
Another object of the invention is to produce a belt buckle, primarily adapted for mens use having a finger thereon to engage in the loop at thefront of the trousers, or to be received in the flap at the said front of the trousers andv being further provided with gripping means to engage with the shirt to prevent the shirt from riding upwardly. v f further object of the inven- It is a still tion to produce an article of this class which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness and thorough eificiency.
Vith the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: l
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the belt buckle constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same showing the belt connected with the buckle and the free end of the belt engaged by the buckle,
Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the application of the belt buckle, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section.
Fig. 4L is a rear elevation of the device,
Fig. 5 is a similar view but illustrating a modification in the clamp and linger,
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the form of clamp illustrated in Fig. 5, and
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a still further modified form of clamp.
The buckle is broadly indicated by the character A and preferably comprises a substantially rectangular member having spaced substantially elongated slots 1 and 2 divided by a central partition 3. The partition 3 may be provided with a rearwardly extendthe tongue 8 of the buckle.
ing portion of bendable material which is adapted to; be bent over the rear of the partition and have its end inturned and formed with teeth 4 which are adapted to be forced vinto engagement with one of the ends of the belt 5.
The longitudinal edges provided by the slot, 1, at the partition 3, may be extended inwardly or the buckle maybe otherwise formed with inwardly extending spaced lugs 6, the said lugs each having an alining opening to receive the lugs 7 provided upon The tongue is constructedy from a Hat piece of metal and has its outer end widened whereby to contact with thel outer face of the buckle on the opposite sides of the slot 1, and the said tongue terminates a slight but suitable distance from the outer wall provided by the said slot 1.
The buckle A at the lower edge thereof I is formed with an inturned longitudinally extending finger 9, and this linger is adapted to be received in the loop ordinarily provided for the tongue of the ordinary buckles uponl trousers, or the said loop may be received in the iap at the front of the trousers.
The buckle upon the rear face thereof has hingedly secured to its upper edge, as at 10, a clamp member 11. This clamp member comprises two spring jaws 12 and 13 respectively, the jaw 12 having its lower edge provided with a transverse depression 14 and one of the walls provided by the said depression is serrated to provide teeth 15. The second jaw 13 has its lower edge turned inwardly toward the jaw 11, as at 16, and the edge of this portion 16 is serrated to provide teeth 17, the said teeth being received in the grooves of the other jaw and these teeth are adapted to engage with the shirt of the wearer whereby to sustain the shirt below the waistband of the trousers.
The strap or belt 5 is first passed through the opening 1 and the tongue swung to engage with the same after the proper adjustment of the belt has been made. Thereafter the free end of the buckle is passed through the slot 2, and each of the parts communicating with the said slot 2 is preferably provided with teeth 18 which engage with and sustain the said buckle in the said slot.
In Fig. 5 the buckle A at the lower edge thereof and adjacent one of the ends of the same is provided with a depending eye member 20 through which passes a rod v2l that has both of its ends provided with heads 22-22- This rod may be employed in lieu of the finger previously described, and as the said rod is longitudinally adjustabley with relation to the buckle, the finger may be readily arranged to be brought to en- Vupper edge rounded upon itself, as at 26,
whereby the material may be compressed between the jaw 25 and the arm 23 to which it is connected.
v In Fig. 7 I have villustrated a still further modiiied form of the clamp. This clamp is also adapted to be hingedly connected with the buckle and includes an arm 27 that has its end, at one of its edges, provided with right angularly extending jaw members 28 and 29 respectively, the lower jaw member 27 being slightly offset from but in a parallel line to the jaw member Q8.
v Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A buckle having upon its rear face a hinged clamp, comprising two spring jaws which exert a tension toward each other.
,2. A buckle having its inner face provided with a hinged clamp comprising two spring jaws each exerting a tension toward the other, one of said jaws having its lower end formed with a transverse depression and being provided with teeth, the lower edge of the otherjaw having an inturned portion to be received in the depression of the irst mentioned jaw.
3. A belt buckle comprising a plate having two elongated openings and a partition dividing the openings, a hook upon the lower edge of the buckle, a spring clamp upon the inner face of the buckle, a tongue having one of its ends pivotally secured in one of the openings, said tongue comprising a fiat plate one of the ends of which being widened to Contact with the outer 'face of 'the' buckle, 'the partition being provided with teeth disposed beyond the second opening, and a bendable member also provided with teeth upon the partition, as and for `vthe purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afHx my signature.
SAFE GEORGE.
