RAILWAY TIE AND FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT.23,1H6.

and LomsHDGREGG, citizens of theUnited' UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM c. GREGG AND tours D. GREGG, or necxnirsacx, new JERSEY, AssIGNons TO THE GREGG COMPANY, LIMITED, 01F HACKENSACK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORA- TION OF YORK.
To all whomc't may concern:
Be it known that'we, WILLIAM C. GREGG States, residing at ,Hackensack, in the I county ofBergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvemfits in Railway-Ties and Fasteners;
. and we do declare the following to be a full,
clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which ita'ppertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accomfplanyinlgr' -drawings, and-to the letters and;
gures of referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to railway tie fasteners, and has for its object to provide a fastener simple in construction, easy of application, and efficient in securelyclamping the rail and tietogether and preventi rli g' n movement of one relatively to thepther. the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part-hereof and" in which-- Fig. 2 is acentral cross section through-a rail and tie, with the features shown in full lines; I
1 -'Fig."3;is" a front elevation of the-novel I shaped clip th fi on e n 9 the Clamp provedf type-of construction 'but for simplicityis shown'as a flat piece of metal, and
[upon which-the rail 2 rests.
' Y consists of'aybolt 3 which lies beneath and in'conta'ct with the under face of the .tie I forth its merits, what we claim is:
and isjformed at oneend with a hook or claw .41- jwhich 'passes up through an opening 5 in the tie'and overlies the bottom flange of the rail 2; The opposite end of the bolt carries a, novel construction of clip or claw which overlaps-the adjacent flange of the v rail and embraces the rail and tie and has oppositely disposed shelves or brackets.
which Specification of Letters Patent.

bolt and shelves will both bear against the under face of the tie and thus aflord additional strength to the tie beneath the rail and distribute the strains through both the tie and clamping bolt without throwing undesirable strains on either. This clip or.
claw designated by the numeral 5 is formed a with a bolt hole 6 for the passage of the clamping bolt 3 and at each side of the hole 6 is formed a shelf or bracket 7 which ex tends inwardly beneath and in contact with the under face of the cross tie 1, and its innerfaces 8 are preferably made to con form to the exterior lines of the clamping bolt so as to hug snugly to the sides thereof whereby an extended bearing for the clip is-afl'orded by the -,clamping bolt. The clip is also provided with the upper claw 9 '-receiving and forming an abutment or the tie and edge of the rail flange; The .tie is formed with an opening 10 for'the clip to extend up over the rail flange and for the application of a wrench, or other tool to the threaded end of the clamping bolt.
By forming the clip 5 so that it-may be applied as described, it will be observed that the rail and tie are securely clamped to-- gether when thenut 11 is screwed up; that the tie is braced and strengthened vby the clamping bolt and the shelves of the clip bearing against the under-side of the tie; and that the clamping bolt is relieved of strains that would tend to bend or distort the same, and that when the sidesof the shelves are-made to conform to the exterior lines of the. clamping bolt the latter will afford an extended bearing for the clip. Changes in the particular form of the parts described may be made and essential features of the-invention retained.
Having described our invention and set 1.' A railway tie and fastener comprising a claw to gripthe rail flange and an opening for the bolt and having oppositely disposed shelves extended in the direction of the claw to lie below the rail flange and bear against the under face of the tie and spaced apart to vwhich Wlll lap over onto the top of the railv lie at opposite sides of the bolt to permit the bolt to lie close to the under face of the tie. 2. A railwavtie and fastener comprising a tie, a clamping bolt having a claw at onefaces of the shelves conforming to the outline of the bolt to have an extended bearing afforded by the bolt for the clip.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signal5 tures in presence of two witnesses.
