Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed June 13, 1916. Serial No. 103,392.
To all whom it may concern:
"Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bed-Spring Dividing Members, of which the following is-a specification.
.lVith the common form of woven wire bed spring as now in general use the fabric necessarily sags; and when two occupy the bed there is a tendency to crowd un omfortably together. Permanent means ave been proposed for stiffening the fabric longitudinally along the middle of the fabric "so that each side can sag independently of the other and. thus forma ridge that will prevent the sleepers from rolling together, but such means are not suitable when one person only is to occupy the bed and it is spring showing my invention applied thereto, portions only of the fabric being shown. Fig. 2 is a longitudinally sectional view on the line IIII Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view on a larger scale showing the means for stretching and relaxing the dividing member.
Fig. dis a perspective view of one of the hooks employedin the construction.
In the views 5 designates the ordinary metallic bed spring frame, and 6 an ordinary woven wire spring fabrio attached to the head and foot rails of the frame by coil springs 7. The frame members or rails I provide hook members 8 and 9 to embrace the head and foot rails respectively,
said hook members having their shanks each provided with several pairs of holes as seen at 10. The dividing member consists mainly of a stiff wire 11 having at one end a coil spring 12 and at the other end a link 18. The end of the dividing drawing" forming v s. done the nose 16 ehgages the link 13 and member having the coil spring 12 is connected with the hook 8 by means of another hook 14 of stilfwire, such as shown in Fig. fl, which is engaged with the hook 8 by passmg the free ends thereof up through the spring fabric and a pair. of the holes 10 as illustrated in Fig.2 At the other end of the dividing member is a hook member 15 similar to that marked l t to similarly engage the hook 9 except that the hook member 15 1s bent in its shank to form an additional hook portion l5 which when in operative position inclines toward the adjacent rail.
11 is brought up into working position as hereinafter described. Pivotally attached to the hook portion 15 is a lever 16 having its upper or shorter arm terminating in a nose 16* and on its longer arm a hook 16 about midway of its'length.
In Figs. 2 and 3 the dividing member and the operating parts are indicated by full lines as in the position when the member is vtaut,'and in broken lines as in the relaxed position. To bring the dividing member into taut position the'lever is simply pulled up to full line position and when so pulled up the link 13 engages the hook portion 15*. To relax the dividing member the. longer arm of the lever is depremed and when this draws it out'of engagement with the hook portion 15 after which the dividing member falls leaving hook 16*.
'The dividing member can be made more or-less taut as desired by shifting the hooks 8 and 9 or either of them to another pair of the holes 10.
The ridge is, of course, formed when the ing member by the weight of the persons occupying the bed.
Said hook portion is to be engaged by the hook 13 when the-dividing member I the link engaged with the.
- fabric'is depressed at each side of the divid- The details are susceptible of modification without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is. Y
