Be it known that I, Miinoiiiiit \V. GREEK, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city,

county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe Construction, of which the follow ing, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

My invention relates to foot wear, more particularly such as is provided with a matted or woven fabric outer sole, and its object is to produce a construction in which the peripheral edges of the shoe sole are protected and covered by a curtain attached to said edges and extending downwardly thereover to the wearing surface of the sole. Other objects of my invention will be specifically pointed out or will. otherwise appear in connection with the following description of the embodiment of my invention shown in Y the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross section through the forward portion of a shoe provided with aform of my invention, Fig. 2- is a bottom view of the shoe shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing the shoe welt in position to be sewed to the outer sole and Fig.

The shoe illustrated consists of an upper 5, an inner sole 6 and a welt 7, the inner sole being channeled or lipped and the three parts mentioned being sewed together in the usual method employed in the making of Goodyear welt shoes. The parts of the shoe not shown are subjected to the usual operations and finished in the usual manner.

The outer sole 8 may be of any suitable material but preferably, as shown. it consists of a felted or a woven fabric such as heavy cotton-duck. This fabric sole may comprise several layers as S and 8 which are cemented together by the use of a suitable adhesive material, a close and tenacious adherence of the layers being produced by pressure. The innermost layer may also be cemented to the inner sole. and around its upper peripheral portions, if desired, to the 'welt 7.

such a manner as to produce a smooth, finished appearance which will not become rough and fuzzy when the shoe has been worn. In accordance with my invention, a

finished appearance for the peripheral edge ,of the sole, particularly of a fabric sole, is

accomplished byproviding a curtain 9 of suitable material which is secured to and extends around said edge so' as to cover and protect the same. This curtain, as shown, consists of a downwardly bent portion of the leather welt 7, which welt-is wider than that used in the ordinary construction so that sufficient welt leather is provided he yoiidthe outer sole periphery to form a curtain 9 when. bent down over the outer sole edge.

The lower edge of this curtain extends substantially flush with the wearing:or tread surface of the sole and the curtain is tightly secured to the outer sole with the visible surface of the curtain substantially vertical. The securing together of thecurtain and the sole may be accomplished in various ways, as by cement or by the employment of double pointed tacks. Preferably. however, the curtain and outer sole are secured together by the stitching lOwhich extends from the channel 11 in'the curtain diagonally down- This stitching may extend through one or more layers of the fabric, but it is advantageous to so direct the stitching that it passes through only one layer. Preferably, the stitching of the welt and sole together is performed before the last sole layer has been applied, in which case the curtain is designed to extend one layers thickness below the lowermost stitched layer. \Vhen thus stitched the last sole layer is cemented in place, thus producing the construction illustrated, this last layer serving to cover the sole stitches and fitting within the curtain, its lower surface being substantially flush with the lower s11rface of the curtain. layer has become worn, it may be removed and replaced by a new layer without disturbing the original stitching.
