Description
FRED P. DE WILDE, or SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN.
CUFF-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed January 6, 1916. Serial No. 70,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED P. DE lVILDE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gulf-Holders, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a cuff holder serving as a link cuff button in the position of the cuff as normally worn, but yielding to permit the cuff ends to spread apart when the shirt sleeve is raised on the arm of the wearer, the spring action of the cuff holder in such position of the cuff serving to clamp the cufi to the arm of the wearer and thus hold the shirt sleeve in its raised position.
An object of the invention is to improve upon the construction shown in Patent No. 1,111,367 issued to me on September 22, 1914, by providing a spring Wire cuff holder with cuff buttons on the ends thereof and suitable sleeve clamping means at the bend which will enable the cuff holder to be engaged with the sleeve normally, and again when the end is raised on the arm and thus clamp the device in place.
Another object of the invention is to perfect the details of construction of such clamping means particularly with respect to avoiding the cutting or tearing of the cloth of the sleeve.
With the above and other objects in view theinvention consists in the cuff holder as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the difierent views,
Figure 1 is a view of a cuff holder of this invention with the cuff shown in dotted lines in its normal position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the ends of the cuff spread apart, as upon raisingthe sleeve;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the cuff holder with the sleeve clamp roller sectioned;
Fig. 4 is a sectionalview thereof on'the plane of line H of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the plane of line 5-5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a detail View of a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 7 is a sectional view thereof on the plane of line 7-7 of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a detail View of a further modified form of the invention; and,
Fig. 9 is a sectional view thereof on the plane of line 99 of Fig. 8.
In these drawings 10 indicates a wire spring bent to a general U-form with its ends first converging until nearly or quite touching and then bent approximately at right angles to their main portions and diverging from each other with cuff buttons 11 mounted on them, preferably in the shape of the enlarged ends of the ordinary link cufi buttons. In order to give the desired degree of yielding movement of the arms of spring 10 resisted by spring pressure one of said arms near the U-bend of the spring is preferably provided with an inwardly bent loop 12 which may be in the form of an incomplete circle, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, with the bent portion fiattened in the manner shown in Fig. 5, to increase the flexibility thereof or which may be in the form of a spiral loop 12, shown in Fig. 6, or a reversely bent loop 12", shown in Fig. 8, or in any other desired shape.
Near the U-bend of the spring wire 10, where the substantially parallel parts are relatively rigid, I provide a sleeve clamp preferably in the form of a clamping member pivotally mounted on one of the parallel parts of the wire and having a hook on its end engaging the other parallel part of the wire. The preferred form for this clamping means is that shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, in which a wire loop 13 has its ends bent around the short length of the wire 10 between the U-bend thereof and the loop 12 so that the loop 13 becomes pivotally mounted and its bend is offset in the manner shown in Fig. 4 to form a hook-like cross-piece on which is rotatably mounted a roller 14 of rubber or other suitable yielding material desirably surrounded by a metal tube 15. The offset in the looped end of the clamping member 13 enables the center of the roller to pass beyond the plane of the U-bend of wire 10 to form a clasp for retaining its engagement with the cloth ofthe'sleeve when the edge of the cloth is engaged between the roller and the Wire 10 in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The roller being of rubber is yielding to adapt itself to the thickness of the cloth without cutting into the Copies of this patent may be obtained for cloth, and the metal tube surrounding the roller protects the rubber from wear.
In that form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the clamping member is also in the form of a wire loop 13, but the resilient action is given thereto by bending the side lengths thereof to form spring coils 16. The hook-shaped end of the clamping member 13 though being without the resilient roller is capable of yielding to adapt itself to the thickness of the material engaged by reason of the expansion and contraction of the spring coils 16.
Another modification of the clamping member is shown in Figs. 8 and 9 in which a strip of sheet metal 13 is pivotally mounted on one side of the bend of wire 10 and has a hook-shaped end 17 to engage the wire on the other side of the bend, there being a cushion 18 of rubber or other yielding material between the pivot bend of the clamping member and the wire 10 in order that the effective length of the clamping hook may be varied to suit the thickness of the material engaged.
In any of the forms of the invention shown the spring wire 10, while normally holding the cuff buttons 11 in the position shown in Fig. 1, permits them to readily spread apart when the cuff is raised on the arm and thus constitute no obstruction to the raising of the shirt sleeve, while the sleeve clamp by engaging the edge of the cloth serves to hold the cuff holder in place as normally worn, and when the sleeve is raised may be engaged with the upper part thereof to hold it in such condition. The yielding action of the clamping member en ables it to be engaged with the cloth of the sleeve without danger of cutting therethrough and assures a secure clamping engagement whatever the thickness of the sleeve material may be.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
