- and projecting across the space between This invention relates to improvements in train stopping apparatus and has particular application to apparatus for applying the brakes in the event of a train running by a danger signal.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose toprovide an automatic train stop whereby the air brakes may be applied in the event of the train runningby a danger signal and wherein the valve connected to the train pipe will be inclosed so as to protect the parts against the weather, thereby insuring the operation of the valve at all times.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.

l teferring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a portion of the body of a car including a truck 2 equipped with wheels 3 designed to traverse the rails 22 of a trackway. 6 designates the brake pipe and tapped into the brake pipe at 7 and depend ing therefrom is a branch pipe 8 equipped at its lower end with a valve 9 normally closed and adapted, when open, to bleed the brake pipeso that the brakes may be applied to the wheels. Suitably connected to the lower beam of the truck adjacent to the valve 9 and surrounding the valve 9 is a casing or housing 11 having the opposite side walls thereof formed with alining slots the slots 10 is the handle of the valve 9. Said casing 11 serves also to protect the valve 9 'ifrom accidental operation of the same.

My invention is designed for use in conjunction with the block signal system of a railroad and arranged at the entrance to each block is a track obstacle comprising a substantially rectangular-casing 15 having the top Wall thereof formed with a slot 18. Extending across the casing 15 below the slot 18 and adjacent to one end thereof is a pivot pin 19 and pivoted upon the pin 19 is one end of a bar 18.- Slidably mounted within a hearing 17 carried within the easing 15 is a rod 16 having one end formed with an elongated slot 16 through which the bar 18 extends and the other end projecting outwardly through one end wall ot' the casing 15 and connectedthrough suitable mechanism with the blade of the adjacent signal. in practice, danger position, the rod 16 slides in the casing 15 and one end wall of theslot 16 engages the bar 18 to raise the latter to active or vertical position, while when the signal blade moves to clear position, the direction of movement of the rod 16 is reversed and the other end of the slot l6 engages the bar 18 and swings the latter to inactive position, as shown' by the dotted lines in Fig. 3.
When the bar 18 is in vertical or active position, and a car runs by such bar, the slots 10 in the casing 11 permit the upper end of the bar to enter the casing and as when the signal blade goes to the bar is disposed in the path of the handle 9, the latter is opened to bleed the brake pipe.
By reason of the fact that the operating handle of the valve swings in a horizontal plane, the operation of the device is not dependent upon the exact height of the handle from the track obstacle, as is the usual practice; and which height is impossible to maintain upon a great number of cars, due to 0 the fact that loads of difierent weight are constantly being carried whereby the springs of the cars allow the car to lower or raise in accordance therewith, and that the wheel surfaces are continuallywearing down. it i e I have herein shown and described the referred form of my invention by way of ustration, I wish it to be understood that I'do not limit or confine myselfto the precise details of construction, herein describedfand delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims andv without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In an automatic train stopping apparatus the combination of a brake pipe, a valve communicating therewith, a casing in; closing said valve and having alining slots formed therein, and a handle in operable relation with said valveand located Within the casing and adapted to'swing in a horizontal plane and to extend across when said valve is closed.
2. In an automatic train stopping apparatus the combination of a brake pipe, a valve communicating therewith, a casing inclosing said valve and having alininfg slots formed therein, a handle in oper'ablerela tion with saig valve and located within the casing and a apted to swing in a horizontal planeand to extend across said slot when said valve is closed, and a track obstacle adapted to be moved into and out of position I n I for projecting into said allnlng slots and to actuating said handle.
