Description
HARRY E.
CAMPBELL,
on NEW YORK, n. Y.
MUNNION FOR FIREPROOF WINIPOW-S ASHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 12 1917.
Application filed January 15, 1917. Serial No. 142,377.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, HARRY E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Munnions for Fireproof Window-Sashes, following is a specification.
The invention is a munnion for fireproof window-sashes, and consists in the construction hereinafter described, which prevents said munnionfrom buckling or bending when one side of the-sash is more highly -tudinal'pockets 0r grooves and the other, B,
heated than the opposite side.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is anedge view of my munnion, removed. Fig. 2 is a a: of Fig. 1.
parts.
My munnion comprises two parallel metal plates or bars A, B, one of which, A, is flat, has a struck up longitudinal rib or pro]ection C which is secured to plate A by screws D. In this way, longiare formed 'on each side of the rib (land between the plates A, 'for the reception of the edges of the panes E, F which are securedin said pockets by putty, cement or other suitable binding material G.
The edges of the panes E, F and the cement preferably does not extend to said rib,
so that empty spaces H are formed on opposite sides of said rib. In the rib are made a number of longitudinal openings I which communicate with said spaces The obj eot of constructing the munnion, as described, with openings I and preferably with the open spaces H, is to equalize the temperature of the two plates A, B,- dnd so prevent bulging or distortion of the niunnion when heat is applied to the plate B, which is on the exposed side of the sash. Metal win-' (low-sashes whereof munnions form a part, are usually desi ed to be fire-proot or, in other words, wi 1 not become distorted so as of which the i to open joints by the action of a flame striking their exterior. Ordinarily such a flame would heat the plate 13 before it. would heat the plate A, with the result "that the plate B would expand more than the plate A, causing the munnion to bulge or curve. The openings flame or hot air from the flame to. pass through them and at the same time .t-o m'eet plate A, and said .hot air or flame is also free to enter the spaces H. The consequence is that the two plates A and B become heated practically simultaneously, and the huekling onbulging of the munnion is thus prevented.
I claim:
1. .A sash munnion, comprising two par allel metal plates, one of said plates having I prevent this by allowing the.
a struck up longitudinal rib or projection,
and means for securing the other of sai plates to the outer race of said rib, the said rib having a plurality of transverse openmos.
5.. A sash munnion, comprising two parallel metal plates, one of said plates having a struck up longitudinal rib or projection, and means for securing the other of said plates to the outer face of said rib, the said rib having a lurality of .recesseson its outer face forming air passages between said face and said last-named plate.
3. A sash munnion, comprising two parallel metal plates, one of said plates having a struck up longitudinal rib or projection secured to the other plate and having transverse openmgs, an plates and on opposite sides of said rib, there being clearances between the inner edges oi sald panes and said rib communicating withsaid transverse openings.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
HARRY CAMPBELL.
