Be it known that I, Fnunnnlok Rounn'rs Porn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 9 Hythe road, Willesden, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shades for Electric lncamleseent Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to shades and shade holders for incandescent lamps and more specifically to the type of Slltltlu which closely surrounds the upper portion of the lamp bulb and serves as a reflector to direct and concentrate the light rays.

()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a shade attachment of this character, which may be readily removed from the lamp and yet when it is secured in place on the lamp bulb, is practically,rigid vith the same so that any independent movement or vibration of the shade is prevented, tha attachment, therefore, lending itself admir ably for use with lamps whose supporting structure is subjected to vibration, as in t'actories and like places. Other objects of the invention are to provide a shade holder of 'an extremely simple construction, in which no screws or other fastening devices which may thereafter work loose, are utilized, for holding the lamp shade to the holder; to provide a construction by which'the shade and holder may be secured to the lamp and removed with the greatest of ease and facility, and to improve generally and add to the attractive appearance of the shade and holder when in place on the lamp. With these objects in view, the invention consists of a lamp shade having a. portion of its inner surface adaptedto rest and be supported on a lamp bulb in combination with a shade holder which is adapted to engage the shade to hold the same in firm contact with the lamp bulb and prevent any imlependent movement of the same. The invention also consists of the specific construction of the shade holder and the means whereby it is secured to the lamp, namely, an annular collar which is adapted to be threaded'onto a threaded sleeve on the lamp, which is dis tinct from the lamp plug, the collar being preferably U-shaped in cross-section and forming a seat for a flange formed on the narrow end or neck of the shade, and which Specification of Letters Patent.

Adapted to be fitted over the upper portion of the lamp bulb including the neck, is a bell-shaped shade 10, which is of porcelain or any other material suitable for lamp shades. follows approximately the contour of the lamp bulb so as to closely surround the same, and has a. circiuntercntial zone on its inner surface resting on and supported by the lamp bulb. This zone is adjacent the mouth of the bell-shaped shade and adapted for close contact with the lamp bulb, but it is apparent that this zone may be positioned at any desirable point on the inner surface of the shade or the entire shade may be molded to fit snugly to the lamp bulb. The narrow end of the shade terminates in an annular flange 13 which diverges or widens slightly as it approaches the neck of the shade. To secure the shade in place the same is first placed over the bulb which supports it in substantially correct position. The shade holder or collar is then fitted over the flange 13 and is screwed down onto the sleeve 3, which will position the shade centrally on the bulb and force the contacting zones on the bulb and shade into firm engagement with each other. The,outer section of the collar will also be forced down on the diverging surface of the flangc 3 which will insure that the upper portion of the shade whichisnotsnpported by the bulb is rigidly maintained in position, thereby doing away with the necessity for accurately forming the U-shaped groove in the collar so that the flange cannot have any free play therein.

For all practical purposes the shade is therefore supported on the lamp bulb as rigidly as if it was permanently attached to it, but to detach it it is only necessary to unscrew the'collar after which the shade and collar may be easily removed as they are of larger diameter than the screw plug 6. If desired, the lamp may be used without the shade attachment the sleeve is distinct from the screw plug 6 and so will not interfere with the insertion and removal oi the lamp from its socket.

Having fully and clearly described my improvements, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In an electric incandescent lamp, a lamp bulb, a base comprising a screw plug and a threaded part of larger diameter than the screw plug and separated therct'rom, said part being interposed between said plug and the bulb.

In combination, an incandescent lamp comprising a base and a bulb, said base consisting of a screw plug and a threaded part interposed between the screw plug and the bulb of larger diameter than the plug, a shade and a metallic collar substantially U- shaped in cross section threaded-on said part and engaging the edge of the shade surroumling the opening therein.

5. In combination with an incandescent lamp having a threaded sleeve thereon, of a detachable shade supported on the bulb of said lamp and having a relatively large bearing surface thereon adjacent its lower end, said shade having a neck portion and an annular flange connected therewith, said flange increasing slightly in diameter as it approaches said neck and a collar threaded on said sleeve having a spaced annular flange engaging said flange on said neck to force the contacting surfaces of said shade and bulb into firm engagement with each other and to force said flange on said collar into firm engagement with said flange on said shade.

6. In combination, an electric incandescent lamp comprising a screw plug and a. pear shaped bulb, a threaded sleeve inter posed between the screw plug and the bulb and insulated from said screw plu sa l shade being of substant ally the same shape as the upper half of the bulb and having its lower portion closely surrbumling and resting upon the bulb in the zone of its greatest diameter, and a collar U-shaped in cross section threaded on said sleeve, said shade having a flange on its upper edge fitting into said collar whereby said shade is centrally positioned upon the bulb and held in firm contact therewith by the adjustment of the collar upon the threaded sleeve.
