Be it known that I, ENOCH P. S'rnvnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Arch Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
y invention relates to arch constructions 'or locomotive fire-boxes and has special reference to improvements in the construction and arrangement of the marginal bricks of such arches.
A marginal brick occupies the space between the outermost water circulating arch tube and the adjacent side sheet of the firebox. Even in a single firebox the distance between the arch tube and the side sheet varies from end to end of the box. It has been the practice to install marginal bricks upon the tube and against the side sheet and to compensate for the varying distance between the side sheet and arch tube by the use of bricks of diflerent lengths at the diiferent points. And likewise, it has been necessary to employ marginal bricks of different lengths in difl'erent fireboxes.
It is desirableto limit the number of sizes or patterns of marginal bricks which are required to construct arches in the differing fireboxes of locomotives. With this end in View I have devised, and my invention consists in, an arch construction in main marginal bricks of a side sheet when the same is at the normal or most usual distance from the support of the inner end of the brick, in combination with a compensatinw 0r spacing key which enables the marginal brick to be used when: its support and the the spacing between side sheet is greater than said normal dison reference tothe Fig. 4

which, though not usual, is nevertheless frequently encountered in locomotive fireboxes. One arch tube (3 is near enough to its side sheet (2 to allow the use of, a
marginal brick, b, of standard or most common length; while the other tube (3) is so far from the side sheet (2) that a marginal brick, b, of standard length can find no direct support upon the adjacent side sheet.
This condition calls forth and is typical of my invention. Rather than substitute a longer marginal brick, I use a standard brick, b, and a smaller, supplementary key brick, c, which latter rests against the side sheet of the firebox and provides a support or abutment by which the brick, b, is held in its proper inclined position.

5. A marginal arch brick supplement, comprising a substantially wedge shaped, stepped keybrick, having an interloclnng groove in its brick abutment face, substantially as described.
6. A marginal arch brick supplement, comprising a substantially wedge shaped, stepped key. brick, having an interlocking groove in its brick abutment face, and having a channeled back, substantially as described.
