DISPLAY DEVICE F03 AUTOMOBILE LIGENSE NUMBERS.
' Specification ofletters Patent.
Patented ms is, raw.
Application filed February 2, 1915. Serial No. 5,679.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I Grmnnus .9. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Richland, in the county of W'asecay State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices for -Automobile lfiicense Numbers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in automobile license tags.
@ne object oi": the invention is to provide a simple device ofthis character which is so formed that the license number can be readily seen in the day time and at night by illuminating the same by electric lights.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is capable of being quickly and easily taken apart for cleaning or repairs or for inserting a different license number plate. i
A still further object is to provide a deice of this character which can be quickly and taken apart so that it can be pati H a mall space.
Cl 7 or) s and advantages will be apparent from s vtollowing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: i 4
Figure l is elevation of my improved license number tag, i
Fig. 2 is an end view,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4: is a section on the line M of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing there is shown a box-like structure trapezoidal in cross section and including the top and bottom plates 10 and 11 and the end plates 12 and 13, the ends of the plates 19 and 11 and the upper and lower edges of the end plates are formed with the flanges 14 adapted for interlocking engagement with the sliding angle locking plates 15. Disposed against the rear edges of the easily top and bottom plates is a back plate 16 the upper and lowerv edges of which are formed with marginal extensions 17 and the adjacent edges of the top and bottom plates with backwardly bent flanges 18 for interlocking engagement with long locking strips 19. An elongated and transversely bowed plate 20 is provided with flanges 21 on its edges which are engaged under the mutually adjacent edges of the strips l9so that said plate 20 is slidably and detachably mounted at the rear of the box. The forward edges of the end plates are inturned as at 22 while the bottom plate 11 is upturned as at 23 to provide retaining guides for the glass plate 24: and the metal plate 25, this latter being in the form of a stencil and having numbers and letters cut therefrom. An angle plate 26 is slipped under the adjacent edges of the angle members 15 and has one of its poi;
tions slidably connected with the front portion of the plate 10 while its other portion extends downwardly so as to retain the upper edge of the license number plate. The end plates carry socketed members 27 by means of which the box is supported on the automobile. Extending through the rear plate 16 are thesleeves 28, in the forward end of each 0 which is the usual bayonet slot 29 for the reception of the electric lamp 30, while in the rear of the sleeves are also a bayonet slots 31 for the reception of the insulated contact plug 32. These latter plugs are provided with electric wires 33 which lead to any suitable source of electricity.
' 'Within the box at the rear thereof is a detachable reflector member 34:.
It will thus be seen that the plate 20 serves as an effective protecting guard plate for the electric light connections and as a means for conducting the wires to one side. Furthermore, by the simple removal of the plate 26 the license plate 25 and the plate 24 can be quickly and easily removed so as to gain access to the interior of the box for removing a burnt out lamp.
What is claimed is:
A device of the class described compris ing a casing including a top, a bottom, a back and sides. flanges formed on certain of the edges of said top, bottom back and sides, removable locking strips engaging adjacent flanges for retaining the parts of the casing in position, a number plate removably eugaged in the front of the casing and having its side edges confined by the ends, thereof and its lower edge confined by the front.-
edge of thebottom, and an angle plate having one of its portions slidably connected with the front portion of the top of the on 5- ing, the ends of said portion 01. the angle In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, 1n the presence of two wltneeses.
plate engaging the locking strips carried by CHARLES BAKER the ends of said top, said angle plate having Vfitnesses: its other portion engaged with the upper JOHN SPILLANS,
portion of said number plate. WILLIAM H BAKER.
