To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN Z. Pinnon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macksville, in the county of Stafford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiflletree- Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to swingletree or whiflietree irons whereby whiflietree hooks may be connected to the whiffletree and the general object of the invention is the provision of an iron of this character which may be easily put in place upon a swingle tree or whiflietree and which may be readily tightened upon the wood of the whiiiletree from time to time as the wood shrinks.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the extremity of a whiflletree with myimproved iron in place thereon;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view 011 the line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the looking segments looking toward its outer face; and
Fig. 1 is a like view but looking at the inner face of the segment.
Referring to these figures, it will be seen that my improved iron comprises a hollow body designated generally 10 which tapers toward one end and which is open at its other end and closed at its smaller end save for a relatively small passage 11. The interior of the body 10 is formed with screw threads 12. Having swiveled engagement with the small end of the body 10 is a shank 13 having an eye 14 for engagement with a whifiletree hook 15. This shank 13 is rotatable within the passage 11.
Coacting with the body 10 are a pair of clamping segments 16. Each of these segments is arcuate transversely and each seg- .ment tapers toward one end and is wedge- Specification of Letters Patent.

angles to the longitudinal axis of the segments.
In the practical use of my invention the segmental locking members 16 are disposed on each side of the end of the whiflletree 19 and then the body 10 is rotated until fully screwed up and until the locking segments 16 have firm engagement with the wood of the whiiiletree, the screwing up of the body 10 acting to force the ribs 18 into the wood of the whiflletree. Under these circumstances, a very firm engagement is secured between the iron and the whiffletree and if the wood shrinks, as it will, then it is only necessary to turn the body 10 a little farther up, forcing the locking segments still farther inward and into still better clamping engagement with the wood.
It will be seen that these irons can be put on whiflietrees without requiring the aid of a blacksmith to that end and that if a whiffletree is broken, the irons may be readily removed and clamped upon a new whiffletree. It will be further seen that as the body 10, which constitutes a sleeve, is tapered, the device can be made to fit various sizes of whiflletrees by turning this sleeve 10 up to a greater or less extent and of course to an extent sufficient to force the locking member 16 into firm engagement with the wood of the whiffletree.
While I have illustrated my device as applied to a swingletree, it is to be understood that it may be applied to many other different purposes, as for instance to the engagement of caps with the ends of neck yokes.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A whiffletree iron comprising a hollow sleeve interiorly tapered toward one end, the small end being formed with a perforation, the interior face of the sleeve having screw threads, a swingletree hook operatively swiveled to the small end of the sleeve, and segmental longitudinally tapering clamping members adapted to be disposed within the sleeve and formed upon their exterior faces each with interrupted screw threads and upon their interior faces with lugs adapted to bite into the wood of the swingletree when the screw is screwed up.
